Much meaning can be conveyed with our eyes, so it is often said that eyes can speak.
Do you have such kind of 31 ? In a bus you may look at a stranger, but not too long. And if he 32 that he is being stared at, he may feel uncomfortable.
The 33 is the case in daily life. If you are looked at for longer than 34 , you will look at yourself up and down to see if there is 35 wrong with you. If nothing goes wrong, you will feel 36 that others stare at you that way. Eyes do speak, right?
Looking too long at someone may seem to be 37 and aggressive. But things are 38 when it comes to staring at the opposite sex. If a man glances at a woman for more than 10 seconds and 39 to turn away his gaze (凝视), his intentions are obvious, that is, he 40 to attract her attention, to make her understand that he is 41 her.
However, the normal eye contact for two people in conversation is that the speaker will only 42 at the listener from time to time, in order to make sure that the 43 does pay attention to what the former is speaking and that he is 44 .
If a speaker looks at you 45 when speaking, as if he tries to control you, you will feel uneasy. A poor liar (说谎者) usually 46 himself by looking too long at the victim, 47 he believes the false idea that to look straight in the eye is a sign of honest communication. Quite the contrary.
In fact, continuous eye contact often happens between lovers only, who will 48 looking at each other softly for a long time, to show 49 that words cannot express.
Obviously, eye contact could be done according to the 50 between two people and the specific situation.

A bit over a year ago my dad’s health started deteriorating (恶化) rapidly. He went from being a fully 41 person to not being able to drive, walk or talk properly. His organs seemed to start 42 . For months he just stayed in bed, not having the 43 to hold the lightest thing.
We did a million studies and no one was 44 of what it was. Whatever he had, the hard truth was 45 me: my father was dying slowly in front of my eyes, my biggest 46 since I was a little kid. For the first time I was able to truly 47 old grudges (嫌隙), and give him proper hugs. I became his carer and he 48 I was a responsible and caring human being. And for the first time he told me he was proud of me. I was excited, for my dad was 49 seeing me as who I was. I became so 50 with my dad and it felt wonderful 51 the pain.
I never really gave up on him. Then something 52 happened. My dad 53 getting better. He suddenly had his 54 back little by little, and he could talk more and even make jokes. He 55 to do a little cooking and house chores again. It was unbelievable! Now he is exactly like himself, energetic, funny and full of life. We are not completely sure 56 he was so ill. Doctors said a million things and every single one stated he wouldn’t 57 it.
Today not only am I grateful to have my dad back but I 58 up believing in myself! I am so 59 for this life changing experience and having more time to spend with him to keep improving our 60 . Great things can happen to you too!

If it is possible to see red (get angry) about not seeing red, that is what I was doing. We had 41 the timing of our autumn trip to see the changing 42 in the Great Lakes States, and I was really 43 No matter how I strained my eyes(尽力注视), I couldn’t spot red anywhere. Not 44 a bit of golden yellow broke through the dull greenery.
This vacation was a complete 45 . I sat alone in the backseat of our rented car and got 46 as we drove north through the dull, dark green. In the 47 seat my brother and my father chatted merrily, obviously 48 .
Then a motto came to mind, “Happiness is a decision.” It must have been something my mother said. She was always passing on words of 49 . When I was a child, she gave me a black book 50 pages. On the flyleaf (扉页) she had written, “Look for a beautiful thing and you’ll find it.” I was supposed to 51 a record of the most beautiful thing I saw each day.
I remembered spending hours discussing what I’d 52 . A baby’s smile? A stone shining with fool’s gold? Pictures in the clouds, or tulips(郁金香) tipping their heads? I found so many beautiful things that it was 53 to pick just one.
Now, on the road, I played Mother’s game again. I took in the all-green 54 . Thick forests lined both sides of the highway. The long hill pines and spruce were seen 55 . Maple leaves danced in the gentle wind. I felt like a little girl again— 56 by beautiful things.
Later in the 57 , after we crossed the Upper Peninsula and drove into Canada, I found the bright— 58 plants I had been looking for. But by then I’d already seen a million shades of 59 , the infinite variety and beauty that only our heavenly Father can 60 And that we can always find—if we look closely enough.

Travelers to new cities are often told to start their trip with a bus tour. It is said that they can then get a full view of the places that 41 them. Nonsense! What you see from the 42 of a moving bus is 43 and completely removed from the real sights, sounds, and 44 outside. Be adventurous! The best 45 to experience any place is on foot and with absolutely no travel plan. 46 go wherever your feet and your interests 47 you. You finally will get to the 48 sites as you are on the bus tour―the museums, the monuments, the city hall --- but you will have seen much more. You will have 49 the present life of the city.
“But what if I get lost?” people might ask. No one ever gets 50 lost in a major city.
At first, you can find your way back to a(n) 51 location. If it 52 you to be “lost”, just find a taxi and go back to where you started. However, 53 things can happen if you get lost. You can 54 at a sidewalk café to sit and relax. You can ask the local people at the next table about the directions. And 55 they don’t speak your language, your trip becomes more memorable because of the 56 . Here are a few more ways to get most out of your travel.
Know before you do. 57 a few hours before your trip learning about the history and culture of your destination. This will help you understand what you’re seeing.
Move around like a local. Use the subways and buses of the city you’re 58 . You’ll not only save money, but you’ll also learn how people really live.
Check the bulletin boards (布告牌). Sometimes you can find advertisements for free concerts and 59 fun activities on bulletin boards around universities.
So next time you see a poster advertising an introductory 60 tour, save your money. Instead, wander on your own. I promise you a time you’ll remember with great pleasure.

“I’m not going to grade(打分) this. I 30 wanted to give you something to think about. No one wrote about the 31 part of the paper. Everyone focused on the black dot, and the same happens in our 32 . We have a white paper to observe and 33 , but we always focus on the dark spots. Our life is a 34 given to us with love and care, and we always have 35 to celebrate: nature renewing itself every day, our friends around us. the job that 36 our livelihood and the miracles we see every day.
37 , we insist on focusing only on the dark spots: the health issues that bother us, the lack of money, the 38 relationship with colleagues, the 39 with a friend, and etc.
The dark spots are very 40 compared to everything we have in our lives, but they are the ones that pollute our minds.”

“Look,it’s Baldy!” A boy shouted in my direction across the playground. Even though I was used to regular insults (侮辱) because of the 21 on my head, it was 22 horrible to hear. I sighed as I headed back to the class.
When I was just 20 months old, I suffered serious 23 after a bowl full of hot oil fell on my head. I was 24 to hospital and had to stay there for weeks while the doctors 25 to save my life. “Holly’s very 26 to be alive,’”they told Mum and Dad. “But she’ll be 27 with scars on her head, and of course her hair won’t grow there. ”
As a child,I cared much about my scars,so I 28 wore a scarf to cover them up when I left home. 29 I didn’t,people would call me horrible names like Baldy. Although my friends were always comforting me, they never 30 understood how it felt.
Then through the hospital I was 31 to a children’s burns camp, where children like me can get any help. There, I 32 14-year-old Stephanie, whose burns are a lot more serious than mine. But she is so 33 that she never lets anyone put her down.“You shouldn’t 34 what people say about what you look like because we're not different from anyone else, Holly,” she 35 me. “And you don’t need to wear a scarf because you look great 36 it! ” For the first time in my life I could speak to someone who’d been through something 37 .So weeks later, at my 13th birthday party, 38 by her bravery, I gave up my scarf and showed off my scars. It felt amazing not having to 39 away behind my scarf.
Now,I am 40 of what I look like and much happier, because I have realized it is your personality(个性) that decides who you truly are.

My wood-shop teacher, Mr. August J. Bachmann, was the most influential teacher I ever had.I had gotten into 41 in his class: Another student had pushed me into a wood lathe (车床), and I became 42 and began to hit him. Mr. Bachmann stopped the 43 , but instead of sending me to the office, he sat me down and asked a simple question:“Penna, why areyou 44 your
life? Why aren't you going to college?”
I didn't know anything about 45 . No one had ever considered that a fatherless boy from the poorest neighborhood had a 46 . That day, instead of rushing off for 47 , he stayed and explained possible 48 options
to me. At the end of our 49 , he sent me to see a secretary who had a child at a state college. This was in 1962.
Well, 53 years have passed, and what have I done with the 50 he gave me? I gained a PhD from Fordham University when I was only 29. I 51

I've won a number of prestigious (声望很高的) educational awards. 54 where would I be if atruly 55 teacher had not taken the time out of his lunch period to speak to me?It was 56 only his confidence in me that pushed me forward.I have
57 his kindness hundreds of times by encouraging misguided youngsters to 58 higher. If I have 59 any children, it is because of him. If I have been a 60 educator, it is because I had a great role model in Mr. Bachmann.

Last Christmas while staying with my parents, I 41 across some old love letters that my parents wrote to each other. These letters were all piled up in a basket, dirty and 42 with dust. 43 to read and sort them, I asked them if I could take the letters back to my Illinois home. They agreed.
As I carefully opened each letter, all of them delicate with age, I discovered a new page 44 unknown to me in this private chapter of my parents’ lives.
My father used to 45 in the army. So his letters were full of frontline 46 of the things about the war. Each of my mother’s letters was marked 47 her 1944 dark red lipstick kiss. I was 48 to these letters like a magnet (磁铁).
Just six weeks after our Christmas visit, Daddy became very 49 . and was hospitalized. This time, he was fighting a 50 kind of war. As I sat by his bedside, we discussed the 51 . He told me how much receiving those lipstick-kissed letters had 52 to him when he had been so far from home.
It so happened that the next day would be February 14. From the 53 letters I chose the card my father had sent Mother in 1944 and brought it to my father’s bedside.
At his bedside, I joked with him, saying 54 , “Today is Valentine’s Day, don’t you want to send Mother a present?” He became more 55 when I handed him the old 56 . He carefully opened it and took out the card, and when he 57 it, his eyes were filled with tears.
My father, in a voice tight with 58 read the loving 59 he’d sent to my mother fifty-six years earlier. And this time, he could read it to her 60 .

A group of graduates got together to visit their old university professor.

The professor continued, “Believe that the cup itself adds no 50 to the coffee. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases it even 51 what we drink. What all of you 52 wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went 53 the best cups.”
