William Butler Yeats, a most famous Irish writer, was born in Dublin on June 13, 1865. His childhood lacked the harmony that was typical of a happy family. Later, Yeats shocked his family by saying that he remembered “little of childhood but its pain”. In fact, he inherited (继承) excellent taste in art from his family-----both his father and his brother were painters. But he finally settled on literature, particularly drama and poetry.

Yeats had strong faith in the coming of new artistic movements. He set himself the fresh task in founding an Irish national theatre in the late 1890s. His early theatrical experiments, however, were not received favorably at the beginning. He didn’t lose heart, and finally enjoyed success in his poetical drama.

Compared with his dramatic works, Yeats’ poems attract much admiring notice. The subject matter includes love, nature, history, time and aging. Though Yeats generally relied on very traditional forms, he brought modern sensibility to them. As his literary life progressed, his poetry grew finer and richer, which led him to worldwide recognition.

He had not enjoyed a major public lift since winning the Nobel Prize in 1923. Yet, he continued writing almost to the end of his life. Had Yeats stopped writing at age 40, he would probably now be valued as a minor poet, for there is no other example in literary history of a poet who produces his greatest works between the ages of 50 and 75. After Yeats’ death in 1939, W.H. Auden wrote, among others, the following lines:

         Earth, receive an honored guest:

William Yeats is laid to rest.

         Let the Irish vessel() lie.

         Emptied of his poetry.

    B. Yeats stuck to modern forms in his poetry.

    C. Yeats began to produce his best works from the 1910s.

    D. Yeats was not favored by the public until the 1923 Nobel Prize.

Airbags, now found in almost every vehicle, have saved countless lives and largely reduced the severity of injuries in crashes. Similar technology could greatly reduce broken hips (髋部) resulting from a fall, something most seniors fear.

Dr. Robert Buckman and his start-up company, Active Protective in Allentown, Pennsylvania, has developed a promising solution, a wearable airbag that can protect hip bones in the event of a fall. The idea was the result of Dr. Buckman’s years as a doctor at Temple University. He noticed how many elderly people were being brought into hospitals with broken hip due to falls, and how they often never completely recovered from the injuries. He started to ask what he could do for these people, and that was when he started trying to figure out whether there was a way of helping people who were at the highest risk of falling and suffering these kinds of injuries.

The device is worn much like a regular belt, but on the outside of the clothing, and it includes sensors that monitor the movement of hips. If the device detects that the person, is falling, an airbag opens before the person hits the ground, cushioning the fall. When the wearer hits the ground, the bag reduces the force to the hip bones by 90 percent, enough to avoid the majority of hip injuries.

With one out of every three people aged 65 and older suffering serious falls each year, Active Protective has a big market for its wearable device. It also has the potential to sizably reduce hip - related health care expenses: Hip injuries among the elderly cost the US health care system in 2012 $30 billion, which doesn’t include the long-term care expenses associated with the high percentage of patients that can no longer live independently.

1.What is the purpose of the Active Protective’s airbag?
           A. To avoid hip injuries among seniors               B. To protect seniors from car accidents.

           C. To help seniors with their daily nursing.         D. To help doctors deal with serious injures
2.What inspired Dr Robert Buckman to make the device?
           A. A report on seniors’health                             B. A serious fall he experienced
           C. His work experiences as a doctor                   D. Suggestions of seniors at Temple University

3.How does the device mainly work?
           A. By predicting road conditions                        B. By speeding up bone recovery.
           C. By reducing the effects of falling.                  D. By preventing people from failing.
4.What does the author think of the Active Protective’s airbag?
           A. It still needs improving                                 B. It has a promising future

           C. It may encourage seniors to do exercise          D It may increase America’s spend on seniors

It took multiple weddings for Christine Law to realize what she needed to do. In the summer of 2014, her schedule was packed with friends, marriage celebrations—flowers --- filled occasions that got her thinking, “Where do all the flowers go after the party?” More often than not, they were thrown out. Law, then 27, was confident she could find a better use for them.

By August, she had a plan: convince couples and companies hosting events to donate their flowers, which she would pick up and deliver within 48 hours to seniors across the city. She wanted to bring beauty into the lives of the elderly. She drew on her experience volunteering with non-profits in order to set up her own organization, which she called Floranthropie. Not having enough bouquets (花束) for all 150 people of a health center, Law asked the staff to provide a list of patients who needed cheering up most, “The first woman I approached thought it was a mistake, and that the flowers couldn’t possibly be for her,” says Law. “I said they were a gift, and we talked for a half hour.”

In addition to health centers, Floranthropie focuses on community groups devoted to the elderly. Theleme is a volunteer for Les Petits Fieres, an organization that aims to help the elderly who don’t have a support system. The group receives a dozen or so bouquets from Floranthropie monthly, and then redistributes them. “Our motto is ‘flowers before bread’,” says Theleme. “We don’t focus on primary care, but rather on nourishing (滋养) the spirit. Floranthropie helps that. It’s amazing what a big difference a small bouquet can make.”

In the beginning, most of Floranthropie’s donations came through word of mouth. These days, Law receives messages from strangers via her organization’s Facebook page and has connected with corporations and flower wholesalers. Law hopes to expand Floranthropie nationally, but at this point is happy to be able to oversee each delivery personally.

    1. What made Christine Law set up Floranthropie?

           A. The Waste of flowers.                                   B. The loneliness of seniors.

           C. The persuasion of other friends.                     D. The warm atmosphere of weddings.

    2. What was the woman’s first reaction to Christine Law’s flowers?

           A. She was moved.                                           B. She was excited.

           C. She was worried.                                         D. She was surprised.

    3. What can we infer about Floranthropie from Laetitia Theleme’s words?

           A. It should focus on primary care.

           B. It is benefiting more than the elderly.

           C. It is doing something of great importance.

           D. It should cooperate with more non-profits.

    4. What is the best title for the text?

           A. Volunteer Your Time                                   B. Don’t Throw Them Out

           C. Special Delivery Makes Your Day                 D. Brighten Seniors’Lives With Flowers

Steven Stein likes to follow garbage trucks. His strange habit makes sense when you consider that he’s an environmental scientist who studies how to reduce litter, including things that fall off garbage trucks as they drive down the road. What is even more interesting is that one of Stein's jobs is defending an industry behind the plastic shopping bag.

Americans use more than 100 billion thin film plastic bags every year. So many end up in tree branches or along highways that a growing number of cities do not allow them at checkouts(收银台) . The bags are prohibited in some 90 cities in California, including Los Angeles. Eyeing these headwinds, plastic-bag makers are hiring scientists like Stein to make the case that their products are not as bad for the planet as most people assume.

Among the bag makers' argument: many cities with bans still allow shoppers to purchase paper bags, which are easily recycled but require more energy to produce and transport. And while plastic bags may be ugly to look at, they represent a small percentage of all garbage on the ground today.

The industry has also taken aim at the product that has appeared as its replacement: reusable shopping bags. The stronger a reusable bag is, the longer its life and the more plastic-bag use it cancels out. However, longer-lasting reusable bags often require more energy to make. One study found that a cotton bag must be used at least 131 times to be better for the planet than plastic.

Environmentalists don't dispute(质疑) these points. They hope paper bags will be banned someday too and want shoppers to use the same reusable bags for years.

    1. What has Steven Stein been hired to do?

    A. Help increase grocery sales.                          B. Recycle the waste material.

    C. Stop things falling off trucks.                        D. Argue for the use of plastic bags.

    2. What does the word “headwinds” in paragraph 2 refer to?

    A. Bans on plastic bags.                                   B. Effects of city development.

    C. Headaches caused by garbage.                       D. Plastic bags hung in trees.

    3. What is a disadvantage of reusable bags according to plastic-bag makers?

    A. They are quite expensive.                              B. Replacing them can be difficult.

    C. They are less strong than plastic bags.             D. Producing them requires more energy.

    4. What is the best title for the text?

    A. Plastic, Paper or Neither.                              B. Industry, Pollution and Environment.

    C. Recycle or Throw Away.                               D. Garbage Collection and Waste Control.[

Harry Potter movies are huge hits and loved by children all over the world. Kids can lose themselves in the wonderful world of magic while learning values that are important to them.

That’s why Paula DuPré Pesman, the associate producer of the Harry Potter movies, found it so hard to leave this behind when choosing to start her organization There With Care that helps families with sick children.

Her move towards charity work did not happen by chance. While working on the set of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”,Pesman received a call asking if she could realize the wish of a child, who was a fan named Gillian with a wish to see a movie about Harry Potter. Archaeologists used DNA taken from a broken clay pipe stem found in Maryland to build a picture of an enslaved woman who died around 200 years ago and had origins in modern-day Sierra Leone. One researcher called the work “a mind-blower.”

“In this particular context, and from that time period, I think it’s a first,” team member Hannes Schroeder told The Washington Post. “To be able to get DNA from an object like a pipe stem is quite exciting. Also it is exciting for descendant(后裔) communities. Through this technology, they’re able to make a connection not only to the site but potentially back to Africa.”

The pipe stem was found at the Belvoir plantation in Crownsville, Maryland, where enslaved people lived until 1864 and where a likely slave cemetery was recently found. DNA taken from the pipe linked back to a woman either directly from or descended from the Mende people, who lived in west Africa, in an area now part of Sierra Leone.

Julie Schablitsky, the chief archaeologist with the Maryland state highway administration, told The Post the discovery, based on saliva(唾液) absorbed into the clay pipe, was a “mind-blower”. She also said records show the existence of a slave trade route Sierra Leone to Annapolis, plied(定期往来) by British and American ships. “As soon as people stepped on those slave ships in Africa,” she said, “whether they were from Benin or whether they were from Sierra Leone, wherever they were from, that identity was lost. Their humanity is robbed. Who they are as a people has gone.”

The new analysis is part of ongoing research around Belvoir that has given descendants of the people enslaved there new insight into the lives of their ancestors. Speaking to The Post, Nancy Daniels, a genealogist from Laurel, Maryland, who thinks she is a descendant of enslaved families from Belvoir but was not linked to the research on the pipe, called the discovery “overwhelming.” “I’m sitting here about ready to cry,” she said. “I’m sorry. I'm so happy ... Thank God for the DNA.”

This year, events and ceremonies are being held to mark the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first enslaved people in America, at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619.

1.What does the phrase “a mind-blower” in paragraphs 1 and 4 refer to?

    A.A surprise                 B.A confusion              C.An excitement           D.A fascination

2.According to Hannes Schroeder, the pipe stem was of great significance because________.

A.it was the first direct evidence that slaves living in Maryland were originally from Africa.

B.it helped the archaeologists to draw a portrait of the enslaved woman.

C.it might contribute to identifying the birthplace of the descendant communities.

D.it contained genetic clues to the ancestral background of its owner.

3.What can be inferred from the passage?

A.The owner of the pipe once lived in what is now an area in west Africa.

B.The history of slavery in America is an ongoing topic of concern.

C.African slaves lost their identities when they arrived at the Belvoir plantation.

D.Nancy Daniels, a genealogist was sorry for not being involved in the research.

4.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A.DNA from an old pipe throws lights on the origins of the enslaved

B.A new research reveals the origins of enslaved African woman

C.The descendants of enslaved people seek their identities

D.DNA contributes to the breakthrough of a new research

As you move around your home, take a good look at the things you have. It is likely that your living room will have a television set and a video, and your kitchen a washing machine and a microwave oven. Your bedroom drawers will be filled with almost three times as many clothes as you need. You almost certainly own a car and possibly a home computer, holiday abroad at least once a year and eat out at least once a week.

Now, perhaps, more than ever before, people are wondering what life is all about, and what it is for. Getting material success is beginning to trouble large numbers of people around the world. They feel that the long-hours work culture to make more money to buy more things is eating up their lives, leaving them very little time or energy for family. Many are turning to other ways of living and downshifting is one of them.

Six percent of workers in Britain took the decision to downshift last year. One couple who downshifted is Daniel and Liz. They used to work in central London. He was a newspaper reporter and she used to work for an international bank. They would go to work by train every day from their large house in the suburbs (郊区), leaving their two children with a nanny (保姆). Most evenings Daniel wouldn’t get home until eight or nine o’clock, and nearly twice a month he would have to fly to New York for meetings. They both earned a large amount of money but began to feel that life was passing them by.

Nowadays, they run a farm in the mountains of Wales. “I always wanted to have a farm here,” says Daniel, “ and we took almost a year to make the decision to downshift. It’s taken some getting used to, but it’s been worth it. We have to think twice now about spending money on car repairs and we no longer have any holidays. However, I think it’s made us stronger as a family, and the children are a lot happier.

Liz, However, is not quite sure. “I used to enjoy my job, even though it was hard work and long hours. I’m not really a country girl, but I suppose I’m gradually getting used to looking after the animals. One thing I do like, though, is being able to see more of my children. My advice for other people wanting to do the same is not to think about it too much or you might not do it at all”

    1. What do the first two paragraphs tell us?

    A. People seldom work long hours to make money.

    B. People hardly buy more things than necessary.

    C. People are sure everything they own is in the right place.

    A. was easy to organize                                     B. has improved family life

    A. repairing your car by yourself

    B. spending money carefully

    C. moving out to the countryside. to live a simpler and better life

Many years agoa French naturalistComte de Buffonwrote some books about natural history. The books were a great success even though some critics (批评家) did not like them. Some critics said,“Comte de Buffon is more of a poet than a scientist.

In the early 1960s Wilt Chamberlain was one of only three players in the National Basketball AssociationNBAlisted at over seven feet If he had played last season however he would have been one of 42 The bodies playing major professional sports have changed dramatically over the years and managers have been more than willing to adjust team uniforms to fit the growing numbers of bigger longer frames

The trend in sports though may be obscuring an unrecognized reality Americans have generally stopped growing Though typically about two inches taller now than 140 years ago today's peopleespecially those born to families who have lived in the U S for many generationsapparently reached their limit in the early 1960s And they aren't likely to get any taller "In the general population today at this genetic environmental level we've pretty much gone as far as we can go" says anthropologist William Cameron Chumlea of Wright State University In the case of NBA players their increase in height appears to result from the increasingly common practice of recruiting players from all over the world

Growth which rarely continues beyond the age of 20 demands calories and nutrientsnotably protein﹣﹣to feed expanding tissues At the start of the 20th century undernutrition and childhood infections got in the way But as diet and health improved children and adolescents have on average increased in height by about an inch and a half every 20 years a pattern known as the secular trend in height Yet according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention average height﹣﹣5'9" for men5'4" for women﹣﹣hasn't really changed since 1960

Genetic maximums can change but don't expect this to happen soon Claire C Gordon senior anthropologist at the Army Research Center in Natick Mass ensures that 90 percent of the uniforms and workstations fit recruits without alteration She says that unlike those for basketball the length of military uniforms has not changed for some time And if you need to predict human height in the near future to design a piece of equipment Gordon says that by and large"you could use today's data and feel fairly confident"

1Wilt Chamberlain is cited as an example to

A illustrate the change of height of NBA players

B show the popularity of NBA players in the US

C compare different generations of NBA players

D assess the achievements of famous NBA players

2Which of the following plays a key role in body growth according to the text

    A Genetic modification

    B Living standards

    C Natural environment

    D Daily exercise

3We learn from the last paragraph that in the near future

A the garment industry will reconsider the uniform size

B the design of military uniforms will remain unchanged

C genetic testing will be employed in selecting sportsmen

D the existing data of human height will still be applicable

4The text intends to tell us that

A the change of human height follows a cyclic pattern

B human height is becoming even more predictable

C Americans have reached their genetic growth limit

D the genetic pattern of Americans has altered

Looking at Rosa Ferrigno's new suit, you could swear it was knitted ()with regular yam(毛线).It's only when you touch it and hear the characteristic rustling(沙沙声)of plastic that you realize there's something special about it. In fact, the suit is made out of over 300 plastic grocery bags.

Ferrigno, who once worked as a tailor before starting a family, got the idea for her unique hand-made suit last August. She was at a family picnic and saw one of the other guests carrying a purse made from re-purposed plastic bags. It attracted her, so she and her daughter searched for instructions on how to make one on YouTube. The 75- year-old ended up making a purse from colorful plastic bags. But that was only the beginning. After finishing her  second plastic bag purse,Ferrigno realized she needed something to match it with,so last November she told her daughter she was going to make a skirt and jacket suit out of plastic bags,as a winter project.

Rosa started by cutting up the plastic bags into strips()and then tying them together to make longer, yam- like strips that could be knitted. But to knit the plastic yam, she needed large needles that didn’ t exist on the market, so she made them on her own.

The suit took Rosa two months to complete. The jacket was made out of 170 plastic bags, and the skirt required another 140. Although she didn’ t even use a pattern when knitting the impressive suit, it ended up fitting her perfectly, and when she finally showed it off at the supermarket earlier this month, everyone went crazy.

“We love it when our customers reuse or recycle grocery bags, but never have we seen a work of art like Rosa 's! It's really fantastic! ”Jo Natale, the supermarket chain 's vice president of media relations, said.

    J. K. Rowling turned another year older this week. Born Joanne Rowling, J. K. Rowling is, of course, her adopted pen name. Concerned that young boys might not go for a book written by a woman, her publisher suggested she come up with a pseudonym (笔名). So, upon combining her first initial with the initial of her paternal grandmother, Kathleen, the moniker J. K. Rowling was born.

That's the interesting fact about Rowling, apparently, and she can only fool some of the people some of the time.

Back in 2013, a crime novel appeared on the shelves. It was entitled The Cuckoo's Calling, and it was written by Robert Galbraith. According to Galbraith's bio, he spent "several years with the Royal Military Police" and the leading character of his novel, a fellow by the name of Cormoran Strike, "grew directly out of his own experiences and those of his military friends." Only, upon further review, he didn't! The book was actually penned by J. K. Rowling, who apparently wanted to try and sell a novel based on complete craftsmanship rather than on her name.

Unfortunately, however, the wife of a partner in the media firm in whom she placed her trust, shared the secret on the social site. Rowling was angry and disappointed concerning the betraying of trust.

I'm not sure whether I would be terribly upset for too long, if I were her. Previous to her being known as the author, Rowling saw her book listed 4,709th on Amazon. After the big revelation, her book jumped all the way to No. 1!

More importantly, I think she got what she wanted. The novel has received nearly universal critical acclaim. Rowling passed her own test with flying colors. Clearly, she's pretty good at her craft!

In any case, I personally look forward to reading her newest writing endeavor.

4.Why was Joanne Rowling advised to use a male pen name?

    A.It was a common practice.

B.Her grandmother didn't like her name.

C.The publisher wanted to give readers a surprise.

D.Women writers might not be popular with boy readers.

5.Why didn't J. K. Rowling publish her new book under her name?

A.She thought her name was out of date.

B.Readers didn't like her books any longer.

C.She intended to prove her writing ability.

D.She thought a new name could make her more popular.

6.What does the underlined word "acclaim" in Paragraph 6 mean?

    A.Severe criticism.       B.Great respect.

    C.High praise.              D.Much sympathy.

7.What is the best title of the text?

A.The Secret Is Out      B.Her Door Is Open

C.The Book Is on Sale   D.Her Effort Is in Vain

Teenagers fitness is now a major concern, to which physical exercise is very important. It reduces stress and improves fitness. Exercise makes your body strong, and helps you to keep the right body weight. Sports scientist Dr. Helen Lopez offers the following advice to teenagers: First, you need to find out your present level of fitness. Then you can design a programme that will help you become healthier.

Dr. Lopez suggests that there are three levels of fitness that need a change of lifestyle. Overweight means that the person gets very little exercise and often has a serious weight problem. Inactive means that the person does not join in many physical activities, but is not seriously overweight. Active refers to people who take part in sports and other physical activities, but do not have a high fitness level.

According to Dr. Lopez, overweight teenagers should keep active to keep healthy. Ride a bike, play volleyball or basketball for a while, and go for a twenty-minute walk each day. All these will help to burn calories. Inactive teenagers should do similar activities, but add some bending and stretching exercises, such as push-ups and sit-ups, starting with twenty of each day. Inactive people can take a little more exercise than overweight people because their bodies are stronger, said Dr. Lopez. The same principle applies to active teenagers.

Dr. Lopez suggests one hour a week or more on running and other forms of intensive exercise, together with fifteen minutes a day spent on stretching and bending activities. These are really important in order to prevent injuries, Dr. Lopez said. Some weight-training and other body-strengthening exercises could also be planned in the programme in order to increase the persons strength.

    1. Which of the following is the reason why physical exercise is important?

    A. It can make teenagers feel relax.

    B. It can help teenagers become fat.

    C. It can make teenagers grow taller.

    D. It can help protect the environment.

    2. What can we learn from the passage?

    A. Active people always have a high fitness level.

    B. Overweight people always take more exercise.

    C. Inactive teenagers are not seriously overweight.

    D. Keeping fit means changing teenagers lifestyle.

    3. In order to prevent injuries, you should do some ________ exercises.

    A. walking
