    阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要.

High school exit tests are tests that students must pass to graduate from high school. In the last few years, however, a number of states in America have dropped them. Although some states still use them for diplomas, the number is down from a high of 27 states during the testing craze promoted by No Child Left Behind (NCLB).

The appearance of this phenomenon is small wonder. Researches clearly show that exit tests have little positive effects on students. A 2014 report found exit testing was associated with lower graduation rates, negatively affected labor market outcomes, and, most alarmingly, produced a 12.5 percent increase in incarceration (监禁) rates. Exit exams, the study concluded, had tended to add little value for most students.

Exit testing relies on the following assumptions. One is that standardized testing can serve as a kind of "quality control" for high school graduates, guaranteeing that graduates are college ready. The other is that they have predicting value for future success in academic situations.

But there is little evidence. The tests don't exactly measure what they pretend to measure. For example, qualities such as intelligence, academic ability, college readiness are not determined. Those that should be developed in all young people, like responsibility, critical thinking, and empathy (移情),are not measured, either. Even supporters of exit tests have acknowledged that they don't offer reliable data.

Thus, more and more people are suggesting that exit test scores ought to be just one component of the high school diploma. Schools should consider many other records including credits earned, courses taken,activities, service, projects and other elements of academic accomplishment so that students can be evaluated flexibly. In other words, exit test scores should never be the only criterion for high school diplomas.

    6.请阅读下面短文,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。

Xi Jinping has called for garbage classification to be accelerated nationwide to help save resources and protect the environment. All major cities are expected to start garbage classification this year, and the system should be completed and function well by the end of 2025.

Yet the reality seems remote from the vision. Take Beijing, an early bird in garbage sorting, as an example. Even if the capital's residents sort their garbage at home and throw them into different trash cans as required, almost all household garbage, including kitchen waste, is mixed up and transported away by the same rubbish truck.

Now it is the time for the government to reform its garbage disposal(处理)policies to ensure the formation of a complete industrial chain on garbage collection and recycling. For example the household garbage disposal fee should be charged according to the total weight of the garbage each produces in one year:

If the policy is carried on, resources can be saved and the environment improved.

    阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要.

In December 2018, The Guardian changed its wording - using "global heating" instead of "global warming" - after scientists found that Earth's temperature is set to rise from between 2.5C and 4.5C. There had been a goal to keep the rise within 2C. And on May 1, the UK parliament (议会) declared a "climate emergency", becoming the first parliament to do so.

It's true that "global heating" and "climate emergency" are - in terms of language - two simple phrases. But they send out plenty of messages.

If with "global warming" we're still inside our comfort zone of handling the situation, entering the state of "global heating" is like heading to a point where the delicate (微妙的) balance of nature is disturbed so much that there is no turning back. Everything will be changing: Coral will die, polar bears will lose their habitats completely, and extreme weathers like droughts and heavy storms will happen at a higher frequency. There is no denying that we're entering a "climate emergency".

"Decades ago when the science on the climate issue was first increasing, the impacts could be seen as an issue for future generations," but, as Katharine Mach, a Stanford University climate scientist, told The New York Times, now it's definitely our issue, "a shift (变化) we all are living together".

However, getting these messages through is far from enough. It depends on each and every one of us to find a solution - if there are any solutions left to find.

"We have no time to waste," said the UK's Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, according to the BBC. Corbyn urged that "we take rapid and dramatic action now".

Indeed, language matters. But action matters even more.

    阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

The World Health Organization, or WHO, estimates that more than 300,000 women die every year during pregnancy or childbirth. Each year, about 2.6 million babies are born dead and another 2.7 million babies die during the first 28 days of life, it said. Most of the deaths are taking place in South Asia and in Africa, south of the Sahara Desert.

Many of the deaths could have been avoided with quality health care, WHO officials said. Some stillbirths(births of dead babies), infant(new-born baby) deaths or deaths of mothers result from complications(并发症) during childbirth. Others may result from health problems with the mother. A poor diet or using drugs may also be to blame, the WHO added.

Another problem is that nearly all babies who are stillborn and half of all newborn deaths are never documented. Those deaths are not reported to or investigated by government health agencies. Traditions and beliefs often affect the collection of important records about infant deaths. In many countries, there is a belief that a stillbirth may not represent a lost life. Officials said this means the actual number of stillborn and newborn deaths is probably even higher than the WHO’s own current estimates. The United Nations agency says the lack of information makes it harder to find solutions. It is important for all births and deaths to be recorded so that health officials can make better decisions on how to prevent future deaths.

The WHO released three reports earlier this month to help health agencies do a better job collecting information.

    读下面的短文。用不超过60字的篇幅总结文章的大意和要点。尽量用你自己的话。

    Social media and teens’ anxiety

From cyber-bullying to cruel comments, social media can be a land mine for kids. Issues parents never worried about are now a risk for many teens. With kids’ digital well-being a concern, researchers are exploring potential links between social media and the rise in teen suicide rates, tech addiction, and loss of real-life social skills. Many parents are wondering: Is social media causing my kid to have anxiety?

It’s a question that worried parents. Some research has observed a relationship between social media use and anxiety in kids, but it’s difficult to know if and when social media causes anxiety or whether kids who are anxious turn to social media as a way to seek support. How kids use social media matters, too. Social comparison and feedback-seeking behaviors have been associated with depressive symptoms, which often co-occur with anxiety.

How can parents keep social media a positive for kids?

    1. Seeing photos of a trip to the beach your friends didn’t invite you to can really be upsetting. If your kid is tired of digital drama, suggest they take a break from social media for a while. In fact, if they post a status update that they’re taking a break, their friends might be very accepting because they’ve had similar feelings.

    2. People post stuff that makes their lives look perfect — not the homework struggles, or the fight they had with their dad. Remind kids that social media leaves the messy stuff out — and that everyone has ups and downs.

    3. In a world where kids could spend their days lying around looking at Wechat, it’s doubly important for them to feel as though they’re cultivating their inner lives. Prompt them to balance social media with soul-nourishing activities such as hobbies, exercise, reading, and helping others. Otherwise, what are they going to show off about on social media?

The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.

Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.

One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy - his name was Bernard - had interested her very much.

"I wish you could see him," she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. "He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do."

After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. "I wish we could help him to earn money," said Clara. "His family is suffering so much."

"So do I," said Harry. "We really should do something to assist them."

For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, "I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish (完成)."

The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. "I tell you what we can do," said John. "You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us? Well, we can make popcorn (爆米花),and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.''

"I'm going to miss you so much, Poppy," said the tall, thin teenager. He bent down to hug his old friend goodbye. He stood up, hugged his parents, and smiled, trying not to let his emotions(情绪) get the better of him.

His parents were not quite able to keep theirs under control. They had driven their son several hours out of town to the university where he would soon be living and studying. It was time to say goodbye for now at least. The family hugged and smiled through misty eyes and then laughed.

The boy lifted the last bag onto his shoulder, and flashed a bright smile. "I guess this is it," he said. "I'll see you back home in a month, okay?" His parents nodded, and they watched as he walked out of sight into the crowds of hundreds of students and parents. The boy's mother turned to the dog, "Okay, Poppy, time to go back home."

The house seemed quiet as a tomb without the boy living there. All that week, Poppy didn't seem interested in her dinner, her favorite toy, or even in her daily walk. Her owners were sad too, but they knew their son would be back to visit. Poppy didn't.

They offered the dog some of her favorite peanut butter treats. They even let her sit on the sofa, but the old girl just wasn't her usual cheerful self. Her owners started to get worried. "What should we do to cheer Poppy up?" asked Dad. "We've tried everything."

"I have an idea, but it might be a little crazy," smiled Mom. "Without anybody left in the house but us, this place could use a bit of fun. Let's get a little dog for Poppy."

It didn't take long before they walked through the front door carrying a big box. Poppy welcomed them home as usual but when she saw the box, she stopped. She put her nose on it. Her tail began wagging(摆动)ever so slowly, then faster as she caught the smell.

    阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写两段,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Once, when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus(马戏团). Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.

This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money.

Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice.

One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband’s hand, looking up at him as if to say, “You are my knight in shining armor.”

He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say, “You got that right.” The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, “Please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”

The ticket lady gave the price. The man’s wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, and his lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, “How much did you say?”

The ticket lady again gave the price. The man didn’t have enough money.

How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus?

Actually we were not wealthy in any sense. So I understand how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them.

Brownie and Harry were neighbor dogs in Stowe, a beautiful and peaceful town in Lamoille County, Vermont, United States, who met every day to play together, running after each other joyfully. Like pairs of dogs you can find in most any neighborhood, these two loved each other and played together so often that they had worn a path through the grass of the field between their respective houses.

One evening, Brownie's family noticed that Brownie hadn't returned home as usual. They went looking for him with no success. Brownie still didn't show up the next day, and, despite their efforts to find him, by the next week he was still missing.

Curiously, the other dog, Harry, showed up at Brownie's house alone one day. He barked, jumped and pestered(纠缠) Brownie's human family, showing that he was filled with anxiety. Busy with their own lives, the family just ignored the nervous little neighbor dog and decided to let the missing dog go.

Harry refused to take “no” for an answer. Ted, Brownie’s owner, was steadily disturbed by the angry, determined little dog. One morning Harry followed Ted about, barking more insistently, then rushing toward a nearby empty lot and back, as if to say, “Follow me, please! It's very urgent!”

Eventually, Ted went after the mad Harry across the empty lot as Harry paused to race back and bark encouragingly. The little dog led the man under a tree, past some tree jungles, to a lonely spot a half mile from the house. There Ted found his beloved Brownie, and he was alive, with one of his front legs falling into a steel trap. At that moment, Ted understood the strange behavior of Harry.

Feeling regretful, Ted now wished he had taken Harry's earlier appeals seriously. However, Harry had done more than simply led Brownie’s human owner to his trapped friend. Ted noticed something quite remarkable before him and was shocked that the amount of love that the dog has for his partner could be so outstanding.

    Paragraph 1:

In a circle around the injured dog, there were some remains of meals. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

    Paragraph 2:

Brownie was saved and taken home by his owner Ted. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

For many years, I had a recurring (重复出现的) dream. I was a little girl again, rushing about, trying to get ready for school.

“Hurry, you'll be late for school,” my mother called to me.

“I am hurrying, Mom! What did I do with my books?”

Deep inside I knew where the dream came from. It was about some unfinished business in my life. As a kid, I loved everything about school. I loved books, teachers, tests and homework. Most of all 1 longed to someday march down the aisle (通道) to receive my diploma. That seemed more appealing even than getting married.

But at 15, I had to drop out because my parents couldn't afford tuition. My hope of getting a diploma(毕业证书) was dead, or so I thought. Pretty soon, I married and had three children, and I thought: “There goes my diploma.”

Even so, I wanted my children to be educated. But Linda, our youngest child, had juvenile arthritis (幼年型关节炎) in her hands and knees, which made it impossible for her to function in a normal classroom. I felt really sorry for her and I didn't want her to live her life with regret. I didn't give up hope of her being back to school in some way.

One day, I saw an ad in the newspaper for evening courses. “That's the answer,” I said to myself. Linda always feels better in the evening, so I'll just sign her up for night school.

Linda was busy filling out enrollment (入学) forms when the secretary said: “Mrs. Schantz, why don't you come back to school?”

I laughed: “There's no way! I'm 55!” But he persisted, and before I knew what I had done, I was enrolled for classes in English and crafts. “This is only an experiment,” I warned him, but he just smiled. So, I told myself to try for just a semester and to see if it would work. Anyway, my dream was still there in my heart.

It was exciting to go to school again but it was no game.____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

A light rain was falling as my sister Jill and I ran out of the shop, eager to get home and play with the presents that our parents had prepared for us and our baby sister, Sharon. Across the street from the shop was a gas station where the bus stopped., which was closed for New Year, but I saw a family standing outside the locked door, gathering closely together under the narrow overhang in an attempt to keep dry. I wondered briefly why they were there but then forgot about them as I raced to keep up with Jill.

Once we got home, there was barely time to enjoy our presents. We had to go off to our grandparents’ house for our annual family dinner. As we drove down the highway through town, I noticed that the family was still there, standing outside the closed gas station.

My father was driving very slowly down the highway. The closer we got to the turn-off for my grandparents’ house, the slower the car went. Suddenly, my father made a U-turn in the middle of the road and said that he couldn't stand it. "What?” asked my mother. " It's those people back there at the station, standing in the rain. They've got children. It's New Year. I can't stand it.”

When my father pulled in to the service station, I saw that there were five of them: the parents and three children-----two girls and a small boy, who were getting wet standing there. My father rolled down his window, “Happy New Year, " he said.

“Thanks. You, too,” the man replied. He was very tall and had to bend slightly to look into the car. Jill, Sharon, and I looked at the children, and they looked back at us.

“Are you waiting for the bus?” my father asked. The man said that they were. They were going to Birmingham, where he had a brother and chances of a job. Knowing the bus wouldn't come along for several hours, my father invited them to our home to shelter from the rain.

The man thought about it for a moment, but then refused. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
