No one can avoid being influenced (影响)by advertisements. Much as we may be proud of  ourselves on our good taste,  we are no longer free to choose the things we want, for advertising exerts(施加) some influence on us.  In their efforts to persuade us to buy this or that product, advertisers have made a close study of human nature and have classified(分类) all our little weaknesses.

Advertisers discovered years ago that all of us love to get something for nothing. An advertisement which begins with the magic word FREE can seldom go wrong. These days, advertisers not only offer free samples, but also free cars, free houses, and free trips round the world as well. They design hundreds of competitions which will enable us to win huge sums of money. Radio and television have made it possible for advertisers to draw the attention of millions of people in this way.

During a radio program, a company of biscuit manufacturers(制造商)once asked listeners to bake biscuits and send them to their factory. They offered to pay $10 a pound for the biggest biscuit baked by a listener. The response(反应)to this competition was active. Before long, biscuits of all shapes and sizes began arriving at the factory. One lady brought in a biscuit on a wheelbarrow. It weighed nearly 500 pounds. All the biscuits that were sent were carefully weighed. The largest was 713 pounds. It seemed certain that this would win the prize. But just before the competition closed, a lorry arrived at the factory with a truly large biscuit which weighed 2, 400 pounds. It had been baked by a college student who had used over 1, 000 pounds of flour, 800 pounds of sugar, 200 pounds of fat, and 400 pounds of various other ingredients. The manufacturers had to pay more money than they had expected, for they bought the biscuit from the student for $24, 000.

1. Why have advertisers made a close study of human weaknesses?

A. They thought it was their duty.

B. They thought it was very interesting to do so.

C. They wanted to persuade the customers to buy their products.

D. They wanted to research how much people spend buying their products.

2. Why do advertisers offer free samples and other things to people?

A. They use them to attract people’s attention.

B. Different means are being used to cheat people.

C. Their advertisements have little effect on customers.

D. They produce too many products that can’t be sold out.

3. From the last paragraph, we know that the factory failed to expect______.

A. how many people would take an interest in the competition

B. how many ingredients are needed to bake a large biscuit

C. it was possible to bake a biscuit as large as the student’s

D. the payment wouldn’t be as high as $24, 000

Stress is a major part of life. Contrary (相反的) to popular belief, stress can actually come from almost any situation whether it is based on excitement, happiness, sadness or anxiety. On the other hand, the simple act of laughing at funny jokes and smiling can reduce the danger of stress.
The effect of stress on the body depends on the intensity of stress (强度). In small quantities, stress can be a source of motivation. However, too much stress could result in depression and heart disease. It is also said to be one of the causes of eating too much.
The fast-paced world clouded by the pressure of work and the requirements of living increases stress. This is why spa (温泉) business has been a booming (兴旺的) industry in recent years and people believe that using its service is the only effective means to reduce stress. However, here are some simple ways you can use to deal with stress without having to burn some cash.
Learn to smile. Don’t undermine the power of smiling. Take every opportunity to smile. Smiling could actually lighten a very unpleasant situation.
Laugh at short funny jokes. Studies show that 40% of people who have heart disease are less likely to laugh or smile. Laughter might just be the cheapest and easiest way to reduce stress. Joking around with friends, watching funny films or TV shows and reading funny comics are cheap and fun ways to reduce stress.

When Peng Liyuan stepped off the plane in Moscow, the whole world wanted to know who dressed the elegant first lady. The reporter released the secret—Ma Ke.

Peng Liyuan has been wearing Ma Ke's designs for more than 10 years, a fact that was only known recently when she was on her first state visit, accompanying (陪伴)her husband President Xi Jinping. The elegant and attractive Peng, formerly a popular singer, has been compared with the US’ first lady Michelle Obama and France’s Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, since stepping off the airplane in Moscow on March 22. Suddenly, everyone was curious to know more about the first lady’s wardrobe(衣服).

Even so, Ma prefers a low-key approach. “If you eat a tasty egg why would you want to see the hen?” she says.

Ma’s relationship with Peng began 10 years ago after a concert in Guangzhou when a reporter told Peng she knew the designer behind the label Exception de Mixmind. Peng asked for an introduction because she was a fan of Ma’s designs and had been wearing them for years.

The two naturally became friends. Ma says: “The painting reflects(反映)the painter, and clothes reflect both the designer and the wearer. Someone desires fame and wealth, or love and sympathy; what you have in your heart is reflected in the design. Those who don’t share my philosophy(哲学) won’t buy my clothes. Peng is a caring person, devoted to charity(慈善)and environmental protection, which is exactly what I’m doing now.”

However, regardless of the brand, Peng’s support of Chinese labels has surprised millions of Chinese who favor foreign fashion brands.

“Instead she presented a vision of Chinese fashion, wishing to bring Chinese designers to the world stage,” says a western designer.

The first lady’s double-breasted coat and her black leather handbag aren’t available at any of Exception’s shops, though Exception’s physical stores do have seen a rising number of visitors.

A. Peng Liyuan’s clothes on her first state visit

B. the reactions to Peng Liyuan’s first visit to Moscow

C. the friendship between Peng Liyuan and her designer

A. the result is more important than the process

B. it’s unnecessary to pay such great attention to her

C. she is not satisfied with the media attention on her dress

D. it is hard to explain “Which came first, the egg or the hen?”

10. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. Peng’s suits can be bought in Ma Ke’s clothes stores.

B. Ma Ke offered to design the first lady’s clothes through her friends.

C. First ladies compete with each other whenever they are together.

D. Peng had liked Ma’s designs long before she got to know her in person.

11. The following statements are TRUE except _______.

A. Many citizens found Peng Liyuan’s choice quite unexpected

B. Black leather handbags like Peng’s are widely sold in bag stores in big cities

C. After Peng Liyuan’s visit to Moscow, Ma Ke’s clothes became more popular

Is there anything more important than health? I don’t think so.“  16 wise people say. You can’t be good at your studies or work well when you are ill. If you have a headache, toothache, backache, earache or bad pain in the stomach, if you complain of a bad cough, if you run a high temperature and have a bad cold, or if you suffer from high or low blood pressure,  17  The doctor will examine your throat, feel your pulse, test your blood pressure, take your temperature, sound your heart and lungs, test your eyes, check your teeth or have your chest X-rayed. After that he will advise some treatment, or some medicine.  18  Speaking about doctor’s advice, I can’t help telling you a funny story.

An old gentleman came to see the doctor. The man was very ill. He told the doctor about his weakness, memory loss and serious problems with his heart and lungs. The doctor examined him and said there was no medicine for his disease. He told his patient to go to a quiet place for a month and have a good rest. He also advised him to eat a lot of meat, drink two glasses of red wine every day and take long walks.   19    “Eat at pleasure, drink with measure and enjoy life as it is.” The doctor also said that if the man wanted to be well again, he should not smoke more than one cigarette a day.

20    He looked cheerful and happy. He thanked the doctor and said that he had never felt a healthier man.“ But you know, doctor,” he said, “it’s not easy to begin smoking at my age.”

A. Work comes first.

B. Health is the greatest wealth.

C. I think you should go to the doctor’s.

D. The only thing you have to do is to follow his advice.

E. In other words, the doctor advised him to follow the rule:

F. It is a pleasure for the doctor to give you some advice.

G. A month later the gentleman came into the doctor’s office.
