I set out to change the lives of those who need help by joining my school’s newly formed Free The Children Club. Through the determination of friends, the group has grown bigger and stronger each year. Over the past two years my friend, Alex Auclair, and I have become the leaders of the club.

Already, after only two years of fundraising(筹款), we have accumulated over three thousand dollars and almost two thousand food items through various fundraising efforts. For example, each year a 24-hour famine(饥饿) is planned resulting in absolutely no consumption(消耗) of food. By taking part in these activities, we put ourselves in the shoes of someone living in poverty.

No money raised goes to waste. At the end of each school year, the group takes a vote to determine where our funds will be spent and donated. Last year, we bought enough desks, chairs, supplies and textbooks for every student in a Kenyan school. This year, we plan to spend our earning helping out families in Sierra Leone.

Poverty is a worldwide issue affecting the lives of people in not only developing countries, but also first-world countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom and Japan. Living in poverty can result in hunger, many forms of disease, lack of education, and for millions, death. It dose not have to be this way. You too can form a club like the Free The Children Club or you can participate in events outside of school. Get your friends, family, even your community involved in fundraising. Do what you can to change the world.

21. An annual 24-hour famine is held to _____

    A. help understand poor people better.      B. draw people’s attention to the club.

23. Poverty can result in some problems except_____

A. death            B. disease          C. hunger       D. wealth

24. why does the author write the text?

A. To introduce the Free The Children Club.

B. To encourage people to change the world.

C. To present the serious outcomes of poverty.

D. To show how to help poor people live better.

Think back to the last time your partner did something nice for you. Now think about how you reacted to that little act of kindness. Research suggests that people who are gratefulnot just by sayinga quick “thanks” but also by expressing the gratitudeget more happiness. More importantly, they also tend to feel more connected to others and better about their relationship.

A recent study by Sara Algoe, a psychologist at the University of North Carolina, found that on days when partners reported feeling more grateful for someone’s acts of kindness, they also reported feeling more connected to that person. In other words, what mattered wasn’t how often someone in the relationship did a thoughtful thingit was how grateful the partner reported feeling about it.

Amie Gordon, a psychologist at the University of California, has also studied how gratitude can affect couples. In her study, she found that the more grateful couples were, the more likely they were to still be in that same relationship nine months later.

Gratitude may be different than simply expressing it. So rather than simply saying “thank you” to the person who held the door open, try focusing on how you feel about the person who did that kind act. “My definition of gratitude,” writes Gordon, “includes appreciating not just what your partner does, but who they are as a person. You’re not just thankful that your partner took out the trashyou’re thankful that you have a partner who is thoughtful enough to know you hate taking out the trash.”

Research suggests that one of the reasons being grateful feels so good is because it helps start the friendly relationship. In other words, when we start being grateful, we’re more likely to continue to feel positive in the minutes or months ahead. And the people around us probably feel it too.

28. What is the best title of the passage?

    A. Real Gratitude Brings Happiness      B. Little Act of Kindness is Good

C. How to Get Better Relationship           D. What People Do to Show Thanks

29. According to Sara Algoe, what is important in building strong connection with others?

A. How often they are connected with each.

B. How much they feel grateful to the others.

C. How soon they can affect their couples.

D. How many questions they have asked.

30. What would the couple do if they feel grateful?

A. They would be unlikely to get married.   B. They would be unlikely to get affected.

C. They would be unlikely to get divorced.  D. They would be unlikely to be questioned.

31. What is special about Gordon’s gratitude?

A. Saying a lot of “Thank you”.           B. Taking out a lot of the trash.

C. Appreciating others by heart.            D. Holding the door for the others.

Earlier this week, I wrapped up(圆满完成) a 5-day trip in San Francisco. I woke up a few hours before sunrise, drove through the darkness and out of the city, hiked for 30 minutes to the top of a hill overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge, and snapped(拍摄)this photo. As I stood there soaking in the early morning light, I was reminded of an important lesson.

When I arrived in San Francisco, I told myself, “Just take photos as you do other things.” My primary goal was to meet with friends and so I figured I could take pictures as we walked around the city. This resulted in exactly zero photos worth sharing. I had vague ideas like, “I’d like to do some street photography,” but I never went out with the intent of photographing something specific. Finally, on the last morning, I went out with the intent of capturing a specific picture and I ended up with something worth sharing. My mistake was that I assumed that because I wanted to take photos, I would end up getting a desirable result.

How often do you do this in your own life? We go to the gym to “work out” without trying to become better at something specific. We wish that we were more creative, but never work on a particular project. When you commit to a task, however, then the next step is obvious. You want to take a picture of the Golden Gate Bridge at sunrise? Next step: find a good spot. You’ve found a good spot? Next step: wake up early and drive there.

This is perhaps the most shocking thing: if box yourself in, then you’ll begin to break out and achieve something greater than you ever imagined.

32What’s the author’s original purpose of the trip?

A. To visit friends.                        B. To attend lessons.

C. To take pictures.                        D. To enjoy sunrise.

33What lesson did the author learn?

A. Get ready for challenges.                B. Stick to your own decision.

C. A given task leads to achievement.       D. Hard work pays off.

34What are you advised to do first when you want to get stronger physically?

A. Make a detailed outline.            B. Choose a certain muscle group.

C. Discuss the ways with coaches.           D. Go to work out immediately.

35What’s the function of the last paragraph?

A. To introduce a new topic.

B. To ask readers to reflect on something.

C. To make a suggestion.

D. To draw a conclusion.

There are certain steps you can take to relieve the damage done by some of the previously mentioned reading problems. 36 Be sure to use and practice them as you read.

Take breaks.

Remember tiredness can lead to all of the health problems and to other problems as well. If you do not rest your mind, you will likely get tired and it will cost you points.

 37

You can mark your place either by pointing to each word as you read it, or by placing a sheet of paper underneath the line you are reading. Pointing to each word with a pencil or your finger helps your eyes see where they should be reading. Placing a piece of paper under the line helps you to move smoothly from one line to the next.

Read aloud.

38 If you must remain silent, whisper the words to yourself, or mouth the words, and say them in your head. It is important that you actually hear the sounds, even if you only hear them in your imagination. This multisensory approach allows you to see, hear, and feel what you are reading. Reading aloud should help you stay focused, understand better and remember what you are reading.

 39

If you are thinking about what is important enough to write down, you will pay more attention to the reading. 40 It will also help you process the main point of the passage and improve the possibility that you will remember things. In addition, the notes you take are a record of the passage that you can refer back to if you do forget elements.

A. Highlight text.

B. Take notes.

C. Trace your place.

D. This will keep your mind from wandering.

E. Notes about the entire passage should be written.

F. Just knowing about these techniques is not enough.

G. If you’re in your own room, you can say each word aloud.
