When Abraham Lincoln was young, he worked in a store. One day a woman came into the store and bought some things. They added up to two dollars and six and a quarter cents.

The bill was paid, and the woman was entirely satisfied. But the young storekeeper, not feeling quite sure as to the accuracy of his calculations(计算), added up the things again. To his surprise, “ I’ve made her pay six and a quarter cents more, ”said Abe, disturbed.

It was an unimportant thing, and many clerks would have forgotten it, but Abe was too mindful of that. “ The money must be paid back, ”he decided.

At night, he closed the store, and walked to the home of his customer. He explained the matter, paid over the six and a quarter cents, and returned satisfied.

Here is another story of him. A woman entered the store and asked for half a pound of tea. The young clerk weighed it out. This was the last sale of the day.

The next morning, it occurred to him that he had used the scale(天平) the previous night, and so, of course, given his customers short weight. I am afraid that there are many country merchants who would not have been much worried by this discovery. But Abe weighed out the balance of the half pound, shut up the store, and carried it to the cheated customer. I think my young readers will begin to see that the name so often given of “Honest Old Abe, ” was well deserved. A man who begins by strict honesty in his youth is not likely to change as he grows older. (281 words)

B.      Honesty is the best policy.

C.      A good name is better than gold.

The groundhog(土拨鼠) has been considered a weather prophet(预言家) for many years in north America.

According to legend, all winter long the furry brown groundhog sleeps in his comfortable underground home, or hole. On February 2, he wakes up. The groundhog is very hungry and comes out to search for food. If the sun is shining, the groundhog will see his own shadow. The sight of his shadow gives him such a fright that he quickly returns to his hole. If the sun is not shining, there will be no shadow. The groundhog will not be scared and he will stay outside his hole. Spring will come very soon.

The idea that animals could foretell the weather probably began in ancient Europe. At the time, most of the people were farmers and the weather was very important to them. If spring came early they could begin the planting season early and have and early harvest. They found some animals were good weather prophets. On February 2, when they celebrated Candlemas Day, all the people watched for an animal leaving its hole. In Germany, farmers watched for a badge(獾). In England farmers looked for a hedgehog(刺猬). They believed the animals could foretell the weather for the next six weeks.

When the early settlers came to North America there no badgers or hedgehogs near their homes. The farmers did not know when to plant their crops.     A rare virus infection has appeared in the central United States, a team of doctors has just reported. The virus causes fever, a drop in the blood’s infection-fighting white cells and a reduction in the blood platelets(血小板). Up to now, there have been eight confirmed cases. Seven men became very sick with the disease but recovered. The eighth man died.

The disease was first noticed in June, 2009. Two Missouri farmers came to the hospital. They reported headaches, nausea, high fevers, and diarrhea. And they were very, very tired. Blood tests showed the men had low white-blood-cell counts. Both men reported they had been recently bitten by ticks(蜱虫). The first man said his wife removed a tick from his body the day before his fever began. The second farmer had been “ticked” a lot. He told doctors he had averaged 20 tick bites a day for almost two weeks. His last tick bite had been about three days before his fever struck.

Ticks spread many diseases, so the doctors tested for common ones. Their tests didn’t turn up anything. Antibiotics(抗生素) failed to help. But that’s not surprising as it turns out that both men were infected with a virus.

Although doctors guessed the virus came from the bite of an infected tick, they couldn’t be sure. So Harry Savage of the CDC(Centers for Disease Control) and his colleagues hunted ticks at 12 places, including the farms belonging to the first two Missouri patients. In all, they collected 56,428 of the tiny animals. There were three different species of ticks in their collection. But the result is still unknown. Get to know more news, please click here. 33.     What can we learn about “ticks”?

A. Their bites are harmless.

B. They prefer to bite farmers.

C. Their bites might lead to terrible stomachaches.

D. They might have something to do with the virus.

34.     Where can we properly find the article?
