Two women captured our hearts; both were dying of brain cancer. Both taught us to cherish life — that nothing is greater than the human spirit.

Brittany Maynard, 29, fought for the right to die with dignity. Lauren Hill, 19, fought for a dream — to play in a college basketball game before she dies. Their stories are sad and tragic, yet inspirational, courageous and beautiful. For a brief moment, both women took us away from the negative political advertisements blasting from our TVs and gave us the most important message of all: to enjoy our time on Earth.

Maynard conveyed a stirring message about being allowed to die on her own terms; Hill’s cause was infectious as she conveyed a never-give-up spirit.

On Saturday, Maynard who suffered from terminal brain cancer took her last breath. She had moved to Oregon to end her life under that state’s Death With Dignity Act. Before taking medication that ended her life, Maynard signed off, saying, “Goodbye to all my dear friends and family that I love.” “It is people who pause to appreciate life and give thanks who are happiest. If we change our thoughts, we change our world! Love and peace to you all.”

A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, Maynard had enjoyed traveling the world before her diagnosis. “The world is a beautiful place,” she said. “Travel has been my greatest teacher, my close friends and folks are the greatest givers.”

She died surrounded by those who loved her most. A once taboo topic — letting a terminally ill patient die on his or her terms — was thrust into the spotlight. As news of her death spread, her story went viral by Sunday afternoon. Mourners tweeted and memorialized her across social media.

As everything changes, one of the most important perspectives you can adopt is staying true to who you are. If you really study truly successful people, and those living out their dreams, you will find a common characteristic: they value and express who they are, regardless of other’s opinions or criticism. I have carefully crafted these tips to help you live a dynamic and fulfilled life.

Always be yourself

Do not change to fit the mold of society and do not follow blindly the advice people around offer you, unless it is for the better. Do no let other’s opinions drown out your real potential and belief in yourself. Insist on being different and do not change so that people will like you. Be yourself and the right people will love the real you.

Choose your values wisely

Be willing to deepen your sense of self. Create a personal philosophy of life. Know your values and what you care about most. Doing so will increase your confidence.

Trust your vision even when everybody else is doubting it

People who care what others think of them will always be limited to others’ opinions. Remember when you pursue greatness, do not expect others to support you because you will represent the courage, strength, and vision they do not yet have.

Keep a good circle of friends

The greatest support system in the world is good friends. You cannot be careless here; you need quality friends are those people who know all about you and still like you. They will inspire you. Nothing is more valuable then your inner circle and the greatest value is one person caring for another.

The point is that nobody can guide you better than yourself. Listening to an learning from others have immeasurable value, and feedback from the right people is needed, but ultimately your decisions are up to you. The world needs you to operate at your absolute best!

A series of climate reports show that the temperatures on earth are rising. That is the bad news. The good news is that countries are working together to fight climate change. Michael Oppenheimer is a professor of geosciences and international affairs. He says air pollution emissions must be reduced before temperatures rise.

The recent United Nations Talks in Peru were designed to prepare officials for a meeting in Paris, France later this year. Many nations will sign a global climate agreement at the meeting. The agreement reached in Peru is different from earlier agreements. Developing countries like China and India are promising to join richer countries in reducing emissions. U. S. Secretary of State John Kerry says developing countries are having an effect on the environment. “More than half of global emissions are coming from developing countries. So it is imperative that they act, too.”

China and United States acted—they signed an agreement. American officials said the U. S. would reduce emissions between 26 and 28 percent by 2025. China said it would begin reducing emissions in 2030. Michael Oppenheimer says other countries will release their environmental plans early this year. He says negotiations continue to discuss details of the agreement before the conference opens in Paris. But he says he hopes people understand that the agreement is just the beginning of efforts to reduce global warming.

Experts say a two-degree rise in temperature above pre-industrial times will cause serious damage that cannot be reversed. The pre-industrial period ended in the middle of the 18th century. That was followed by the industrial revolution, when machines and new manufacturing processes were created. Professor Oppenheimer says if countries do not take action, the planet will become warmer faster than at any time in the history of civilization.

   C. China has a large effect on the environment         D. action should be taken to reduce air pollution

34. What makes the agreement reached in Peru special?

   A. More people join in reducing global warming

   B. Such a meeting has been held in Peru for the first time

   C. More details of the agreement have been discussed

   D. China and India will join in reducing emissions

35. What may be the main reason why the planet becomes warmer faster than before?

This week I was inspired by a post from PasitivelyPresent.com. The author of the post, Danielle Dipirro, (“Dani”) complete a book in 2012, Stay Positive: Daily Reminders from Positively Present, and has received some impressive press as of late.   36   . In short, Dani lists the top five benefits of having an open mind.

37   . When you open your mind, you free yourself from having to be in complete control of your thoughts. You allow yourself to experience new ideas and thoughts and you challenge the beliefs you currently have.

Experiencing changes.   38   . Now, this doesn’t mean you necessarily will change your beliefs---in fact, the process may actually reinforce your current beliefs more strongly, but thinking with an open mind gives you the option of creating positive change and stronger results.

Making mistakes. Making mistakes doesn’t seem like it would be much of a benefit, but I have continually made the case that it is. When you allow yourself to see things from others’ perspectives, you gain the opportunity to “fail up”.

Strengthening yourself. Open-mindedness provides a platform to build upon, piling one idea on top of another.   ____39    . It’s very hard to build on experiences without an open mind.

Being honest. Being open-minded means being honest enough to adroit that you aren’t all-knowing. This understanding creates an underlying sense of authenticity that permeates the character of any person who lives with an open mind.

For some, being open-minded is as easy as breathing. For most others, it’s a challenge-something they have to think about constantly and make a continual effort to keep and obtain. The majority of people struggle with this concept.  40

A. Opening up your mind to new ideas allows you to the opportunity to change what you think and how you view the world.

B. Challenging yourself.

C. Everything you experience “adds up”, strengthening the person you are and what you believe in

D. I was most impressed, however, by her reasons for stressing the ability to keep an open mind

E. Letting go of control

F. But making the effort to think openly and embrace new ideas will produce untold benefits for your business and career in the seasons to come.

G. When you live with an open mind, you have a strong sense of self.
