Good afternoon, everyone!

The topic of my speech today is “My Attitude to Pursuit of Fashion in School”

Now in our school there is a hot pursuit of fashionSome students live a very expensive lifeThey have the same hairstyles as their favorable stars and wear top brand of clothes and shoesSome use expensive mobile phones

The reasons why they do so are as followsFirstly, they hope to look smart and specialSecondly, they want to win others’ admiration and respectIn addition, it makes them feel cool

As far as I am concerned, we students should hold the right sense of valuesWe should make careful use of money in our daily lifeWhat’s more , it is advisable for us to donate some pocket money to the Hope Project so that those poor children in rural areas can return to school to receive normal educationLast but not least, it is the inner beauty rather than our appearance that makes us respectable

Thank you for listening!

阅读下面短文,并根据短文后的要求答题(请注意问题后的字数要求)。

It’s no secret that raising children can be expensive, but how about nearly a quarter of a million dollars expensive? A government report released on Tuesday says a middle-income family with a child born last year will spend about $221,000 raising that child through age 17

The report identified housing as the largest single expense, followed by food and childcare and education costsThe $221,000 in expenses rises to about $292,000 when adjusted for inflation(通货膨胀).Families with more income ______________ on child-related costs, the report saidA two-parent family that earns less than $57,000 annually will spend about $160,000 on a child from birth through high schoolThose with an income between $57,000 and $99,000 spend about $221,000 and those with higher incomes are expected to spend roughly $367,000

Most single-parent households in the USmake less than $57,000 and are expected to spend about 7 percent less on child-rearing costs, compared to two-parent households in that same income group, according to the reportCosts of raising a child are highest in the urban northeast and lowest in the urban south and rural areasThe report helps courts and states determine child-support guidelines and foster care paymentsIt does not address costs specifically related to childbearing(分娩) and paying for college

One of the largest changes over time has been the increase in costs related to caring for young childrenThe report was first issued in 1960, when such costs were largely very tiny, but with more working families turning to outside help with childcare, it has grown to be a significant expense for many familiesThe report does not give total costs related to early childcareA mother of three Raben Andrews of StLouis said the government figures sounded right to her“well, that’s not half of it,” joked the 42-year-old public school teacher“ I still have to put the children through college

When we think about giving help to developing countries, we often think about giving money so that these countries can build schools and hospitals, buy food and medicine, or find clean water suppliesThese seem to be most important basic needs of the people we are trying to helpHowever, it's far from enoughWe have to come up with some better ideas to help them

I was very surprised, then ,when I read about a plan to make cheap laptop computers for children in developing countriesA man called Nicholas Negroponte invented a cheap laptop computer, which can run without electricityHe decided to invent this computer after he visited a school in Cambodia

The laptop which Mr. Negroponte has designed is a little different from the normal laptop computers you can buy in shopsOne difference is that it will be covered in rubber so that it is very strong and won't be damaged easilyAs electricity supply can be a problem in developing countries, the computer also has a special handle so that children can wind the computer up to give it extra power when needed

These special laptop computers will cost less than $100 and Mr. Negroponte wants to build as many as 15 million machines in the first year of productionThe idea is that these computers will help the children's education as they will be able to access the InternetThese computers might not help the people in developing countries immediately, but by improving children's education they should help people to find their own solutions to their problems in the long term

Another idea to help children in developing countries is to recycle old mobile phones so that they can be used againIn the UK, and, probably in many other countries too, millions of mobile phones are thrown away every yearThe waste created by throwing away these old phones is very bad for the environment, so it seems to be an excellent idea to recycle themIn this way we shall be able to achieve two important goals at the same timeWe will reduce the waste we produce and help othersIn other words, we will be able to " kill two birds with one stone ",  and that is always a good thing

1It's an excellent idea to recycle old mobile phones because _______

Ait reduces waste and can help others

Bit prevents waste and can earn lots of money

Cit can send the waste produced by developed countries to other countries

Dit is good for the environment and very educative for phone users

2The author gives the example of Mr. Negroponte's cheap computers _______

Ato show what high tech can bring us

Bto illustrate the kindness of people in the developed countries

Cto show how to find business opportunities in developing countries

Dto give an example of how to help developing countries

3Which of the following statements is TRUE about Mr. Negroponte's cheap computers?

AHis computers don’t need any power to function well

BHis computers are covered with rubber so that they are very cheap

CHis computers will help children in developing countries to have better education

DHis computers will help people in developing countries to find all the solutions

4Which of the following can be used to replace the underlined word in Para3?

       Ablow                 Bturn                  Cpush                  Dlift

5Where does this passage probably come from?

AA novel               BA newspaper        CA lecture             DAn advertisement

A new age is comingCall it what you will: the service economy, the information age, the knowledge societyIt all translates to a fundamental change in the way we workAlready we’re partly there, the percentage of people who earn their living by making things has fallen dramatically in the Western WorldToday the majority of jobs in America, Europe and Japan are in the service industry, and the number is on the riseMore women are in the work force than ever beforeThere are more part-time jobsMore people are self-employedBut the range of the economic transformation can’t be measured by numbers alone, because it also is giving rise to important new way of thinking about the nature of work itselfLong-held ideas about jobs and careers, the skills needed to succeed, even the relation between individuals and employers — all these are being challenged

We have only to look behind us to get some sense of what may lie aheadNo one looking ahead 20 years possibly could have foreseen the ways in which a single invention, the chip, would transform our world thanks to its applications in personal computers, digital communications and factory robotsTomorrow’s achievements in biotechnology, artificial intelligence or even some still unimagined technology could produce a similar wave of dramatic changesBut one thing is certain: information and knowledge will become even more valid, and the people who possess it, whether they work in manufacturing or services, will have the advantage and produce the wealthComputer knowledge will become as basic a requirement as the ability to read and writeThe ability to solve problems by applying information instead of performing routine tasks will be valued above all elseIf you cast your mind ahead 10 years, information service will be superiorIt will be the way you do your job

1A characteristic of the new age mentioned in the passage is that _______

Athe service industry mainly relies on females

      Bmanufacturing industries are steadily increasing

Cmore people are in the service industry than before

Dthe work in the service industry is more comfortable than that in manufacturing industry

2Which of the following is true according to the passage?

APeople’s traditional concepts about jobs need changing

BThe relation between employees and employers is becoming tense

CMore women than men are in the work force

DPart-time jobs are more welcome than full-time jobs

3By mentioning the invention of “the chip”, the author means to say that_______

Awe haven’t paid enough attention to the importance of high technology

Bthe chip is the most important invention today

Cthe power of science and technology is beyond our imagination

Dit’s a great challenge to apply new inventions to our life

4We may draw a conclusion from the passage that _______

Ainformation will play a greater role in people’s work and daily life in the future

Bwe can foresee the future if technology develops fast enough

Cthe ability of performing routine tasks gives you an advantage in work

Drobots will replace people to do all the work both in manufacturing and service industries

5The author’s attitude to the coming age is _______

      Adoubtful         Benthusiastic     Csatisfied              Duncertain
