Dear editor,

I'm writing to tell you my opinion on Chinese students going abroad for further studies at an early ageIn recent years more and more middle school students are going abroad to studySome primary school students have also been sent abroad by their parents

I agree that Chinese students going to study abroad is a good thing, which helps us to know more about foreign countries, but I don't think it necessary for us to do that so early

The education in China and that in foreign countries both have advantages and disadvantagesThe most important thing for us Chinese students at primary school or middle school to do at present is to know our country, our people and our culture wellWithout that, we'll have no root and cannot have a good understanding of other countries, people and cultures

Besides, going to study in foreign countries at too early an age not only costs a lot of money, it could also bring serious problemsTaking care of themselves is one of them

In my opinion, as primary or middle school students, we should devote our time to studying harder in our own country and improving ourselves, when the chance to study abroad arrives, we'll grasp it and make the best use of it

Susan Sontag 1933--2004 was one of the most noticeable figures in the world of literatureFor more than 40 years she made it morally necessary to know everything—to read every book worth reading, to see every movie worth seeingWhen she was still in her early 30s, publishing essays in such important magazines as Partisan Review, she appeared as the symbol of American culture life, trying hard to follow every new development in literature, film and artWith great effort and serious judgment, Sontag walked at the latest edges of world culture

Seriousness was one of Sontage’s lifelong watchwords(格言), but at a time when the barriers between the well-educated and the poor-educated were obvious, she argued for a true openness to the pleasure of pop cultureIn “Notes Camp”, the 1964 essay that first made her name, she explained what was then a little-known set of difficult understandings, through which she could not have been more famous“Notes on Camp”, she wrote, represents “a victory of ‘form’over‘content’,‘beauty’over‘morals’”

By conviction(信念)she was a sensualist(感觉论者), but by nature she was a moralist (伦理学者), and in the works she published in the 1970s and 1980s , it was the latter side of her that came forwardIn illness as Metaphor —published in 1978, after she suffered cancer—she argued against the idea that cancer was somehow a special problem of repressed personalities(被压抑的性格), a concept that effectively blamed the victim for the diseaseIn fact, re-examining old positions was her lifelong habit

In America, her story of a 19th  century Polish actress who set up a perfect society in California, won the National Book Award in 2000But it was as a tireless all-purpose cultural view that she made her lasting fame“Sometimes,” she once said ,“I feel that, in the end, all I am really defending is the idea of seriousness, of true seriousness”And in the end, she made us take it seriously too

A team of researchers recently created a robot that can repair itselfThe newly designed machine can sense injury to itself and adaptThat ability sets the new robot apart from earlier machinesBecause the robot can recover from unexpected damage, it may be especially useful in exploring unfamiliar places“There is a need for planetary robotic rovers to be able to fix things on their own,” says Josh Bongard, one of the device’s creators“Robots on other planets must be able to continue their mission without human help if they are damaged and cannot communicate their problem back to Earth

A typical robot functions according to a computer program, but the new robot works differentlyFirst, sensors in its four legs observe the robot’s movements and signals to its built-in computerFrom the formation it collects, the robot creates its own programs that allow it to adapt to different situationsFor example, when the researchers shortened one of the robot’s legs, the smart machine simply adjusted its way of walking—it used three legs instead of four

The researchers are looking for other places to put the resilient robot to workOne possible spot is the ocean floorThat dark and dangerous undersea terrain might be a good choice for a robot the scientists call the Starfish“We never officially named the robot, but we usually refer to it as the Starfish, even though a real starfish has five rather than four legs,” says Bongard“Also, a real starfish is much better than our robot at recovering from injury, because it can actually regrow its legs” Scientists have created robots that help humans in many ways: by exploring space, fighting fires, and even performing surgery

1The newly designed robot is different from the former ones because it ___________

Acan communicate with people on the earth about their problems

Bworks according to a certain computer program

Ccan find problems itself and get used to the new environment

3The underlined word “resilient” in the last paragraph means the robot __________

Ais creative

Buses advanced technology

Crecover easily

Dis informative

4What might be the best title of the passage?

AHow does the Starfish Robot work

BDo-It-Yourself Robot Repair

CRobots Designed to Work On Other Planets
