阅读下面的短文,然后按要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

A dramatic ballad singer studied under a strict teacher who insisted that he rehearse day after day, month after month the same passage from the same song, without being permitted to go any further. Finally, overwhelmed by frustration and despair, the young man ran off to find another profession. One night, stopping at an inn, he came across a recitation contest. Having nothing to lose, he entered the competition and, of course, sang the one passage that he knew so well. When he had finished, the sponsor of the contest highly praised his performance. Despite the student’s embarrassed objections, the sponsor refused to believe that he had just heard a beginner perform. “Tell me,” the sponsor said, “who is your instructor? He must be a great master. ” The student later became known as the great performer Koshiji.

Koshiji practiced so much that it became part of him. To really master something, it has to become part of you.

【答案】

The dramatic ballad student, who later became a great performer, could not stand the repeated boring practice, which was to lead to his very success in his career. (28 words)

As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. Consistent practice can result in perfect performance. Practice is of great importance in doing anything.

Take my personal experience in learning English for example. Three years ago, I had great trouble with listening comprehension. I couldn’t understand the teacher in class, let alone tapes this was obviously due to my lack of practice in Junior High. To improve my listening, I started to read English aloud every morning and listen to tapes and radio programs every evening. My efforts paid off and in the final examination I did an excellent job in listening.

I strongly believe that practice makes perfect. Whatever we do, we should persist in it and keep on working until we are successful. (123 words)

【答案】

Recently we have had a discussion about whether parents should accompany their children in their study. Nearly 70% of us disagree since it makes us fall into the habit of dependence, so that we won’t form the good habit of studying. What’s more, it affects our parents’ work and rest. While about 30% of my classmates think it necessary for our parents to accompany us so that we would have more time for study. Besides, our parents can help us set our aim and urge us to finish our task.

4.

In this age of Internet chat, videogames and reality television, there is no shortage of mindless activities to keep a child occupied. Yet, despite the competition, my 8-year-old daughter Rebecca wants to spend her leisure time writing short stories. She wants to enter one of her stories into a writing contest, a competition she won last year.

As a writer I know about winning contest, and about losing them. I know what it is like to work hard on a story only to receive a rejection slip from the publisher. I also know the pressures of trying to live up to a reputation created by previous victories. What if she doesn’t win the contest again? That’s the strange thing about being a parent. So many of our own past scars and dashed hopes can surface.

A revelation (启示) came last week when I asked her, “Don’t you want to win again?” “No,” she replied, “I just want to tell the story of an angel going to first grade.”

I had just spent weeks correcting her stories as she spontaneously (自发地) told them. Telling myself that I was merely an experienced writer guiding the young writer across the hall, I offered suggestions for characters, conflicts and endings for her tales. The story about a fearful angel starting first grade was quickly “guided” by me into the tale of a little girl with a wild imagination taking her first music lesson. I had turned her contest into my contest without even realizing it.

Staying back and giving kids space to grow is not as easy as it looks. Because I know very little about farm animals who use tools or angels who go to first grade, I had to accept the fact that I was co-opting (借用) my daughter’s experience.

While stepping back was difficult for me, it was certainly a good first step that I will quickly follow with more steps, putting myself far enough a way to give her room but close enough to help if asked. All the while I will be reminding myself that children need room to experiment, grow and find their own voices.

1. What do we learn from the first paragraph?

A. Children do find lots of fun in many mindless activities.

B. Rebecca is much too occupied to enjoy her leisure time.

C. Rebecca draws on a lot of online materials for her writing.

D .A lot of distractions compete for children’s time nowadays.

2. What did the author say about her own writing experience?

A. She did not quite live up to her reputation as a writer.

B. Her way to success was full of pains and frustrations.

C. She was constantly under pressure of writing more.

D. Most of her stories had been rejected by publishers.

3. Why did Rebecca want to enter this year’s writing contest?

A. She believed she possessed real talent for writing.

B. She was sure of winning with her mother’s help.

C. She wanted to share her stories with readers.

D. She had won a prize in the previous contest.

4. The author took great pains to refine her daughter’s stories because ________.

A. she believed she had the knowledge and experience to offer guidance

B. she did not want to disappoint Rebecca who needed her help so much

C. she wanted to help Rebecca realize her dreams of becoming a writer

D. she was afraid Rebecca’s imagination might run wild while writing

5. What’s the author’s advice for parents?

A .A writing career, though attractive, is not for every child to pursue.

B .Children should be allowed freedom to grow through experience.

C. Parents should keep an eye on the activities their kids engage in.

    D. Children should be given every chance to voice their opinions.

Among various programs, TV talk shows have covered every inch of space on daytime television. And anyone who watches them regularly knows that each one is different in style. But no two shows are more opposite in content, while at the same time standing out above the rest, than the Jerry Springer and Oprah Winfrey shows.

Jerry Springer could easily be considered the king of "rubbish talk". The topics on his show are as surprising as can be. For example, the show takes the ever-common talk show titles of love, sex, cheating, and hate, to a different level. Clearly, the Jerry Springer show is about the dark side of society, yet people are willing to eat up the troubles of other people's lives.

Like Jerry Springer, Oprah Winfrey takes the TV talk show to its top. But Oprah goes in the opposite direction. The show is mainly about the improvement of society and different quality of life. Contents are from teaching your children lessons, managing your work week, to getting to know your neighbors.

Compared to Oprah, the Jerry Springer show looks like poisonous waste being poured into society. Jerry ends every show with a "final word". He makes a small speech about the entire idea of the show. Hopefully, this is the part where most people will learn something very valuable.

Clean as it is, the Oprah show is not for everyone. The show's main audience are middle-class Americans. Most of the people have the time, money and ability to deal with life's tough problems. Jerry Springer, on the other hand, has more of a connection with the young adults of society. These are 18- to 21-year-olds whose main troubles in life include love, relationship, sex, money and drug. They are the ones who see some value and lessons to be learned through the show's exploitation.

1. Compared with other TV talk shows, both the Jerry Springer and the Oprah Winfrey shows are

_________________.

A. more interesting                  B. unusually popular

C. more detailed               D. more formal
2. Though the social problems Jerry Springer talks about appear unpleasant, people who watch the shows ______.
    A. show disbelief in them                    B. are ready to face up to them
    C. remain cold to them                        D. are willing to get away from them
3. Which of the following is likely to be a topic of the Oprah Winfrey show?
   A. A new type of robot.                      B. National hatred.
   C. Family income planning.                 D. Street accident.
4. We can learn from the passage that the two talk shows ____.
    A. have become the only ones of its kind

B. exploit the weaknesses in human nature

C. appear at different times of the day

D. attract different people

5. What is the advantage of the Jerry Springer show?

   A. The show exposes the dark sides of society.

   B. The show pours poisonous waste into society.

   C. Jerry sums up the whole idea of the show.

   D. Jerry talks about the improvement of society.
