As is well known, when senior students graduate from school, most of their textbooks are thrown away, which are still in good condition. What a waste of it!

I quite agree to the suggestion that we should recycle these textbooks. For one thing, recycling textbooks can save a lot of natural materials, which are used to make textbooks. For another, senior students may have made plenty of useful notes on the pages. They are very helpful to those textbooks users. What’s more, the cost of the books will be reduced greatly, and there will be no doubt that it will unload some burden of the families of the students. Actually in Australia and some other countries, recycling textbooks is popular and it gives us a good example. Why can’t we have a try?

阅读下面的短文,并根据文章后的要求答题。(请注意问题后的词数要求)

Sports are all about change. A team gets better. A kid practices more and swims a personal best or learns a new move on the basketball court.

In 2006, two things happened that got me thinking about change-in sports and in life. One of them is tennis champion Andre Agassi, who retired in 2006. Agassi was a super player who won 60 titles. Including eight major championships. But his greatest achievement might have been how much he changed during his career.

When he was young, Agassi was a showoff who seemed to care only about himself. He didn’t train very hard, but he won matches because of his tremendous talent. Eventually, though, injuries and his bad attitude caught up with him. He fell from No. 1 in the world ranking to No. 141.

So Agassi changed as a player. He trained harder and became a world-class player again. More importantly, he changed as a person. He was nicer to fans and opponents. He stopped thinking just about himself and started             .Through his efforts, he raised more than $60 million to help disadvantaged kids around his hometown of Las Vegas, Nevada. He even started a school for at-risk kids.

At the start of a new year, lots of people promise themselves they will change. They might vow to get in good physical shape, do better in school or be nicer to others.

Changes such as those can be difficult. But they do happen. Just remember Andre Aggassi: It wasn’t easy, but he changed, and changed for the better.

1What is the best title of the passage? (Please answer within 10 words).

2Which sentence in the passage can be replaced by the following one?

3Please fill in the blank in the fifth paragraph with proper words or phrases to complete the sentence. (Please answer within 10 words.)

4What do you plan to do in order to improve yourself? (Please answer within 30 words.)

5Translate the underlined sentence in the third paragraph into Chinese.

Anthropologists are scientists that study people who often lived hundreds or even thousands of years ago. Items those men, women, and children left behind when they died – everything from clothing to jewelry and tools -- tell anthropologists a lot. And sometimes even their words survive.

Experts believe that a discovery in Mexico is the oldest example of writing ever found in the Americas. The people who created it probably lived 3,000 years ago, long before Christopher Columbus arrived in the New World.

Workers digging in a rock mine happened to notice a stone block with marks carved onto its surface. They found the large piece of stone near the city of Cascajal, Mexico, which was once the capital of an ancient people called the Olmec.

“There are signs on the block that seem to show objects used by the Olmec during their religious ceremonies,” says Dr. Stephen Houston, of Brown University in the USA. “There is a sign that looks very similar to a knife and another that looks like the chair of a King,” he explains.

Houston, an expert on the writing systems of ancient cultures, says the discovery is exciting because “it makes clear that the Olmec could read and write. It is like hearing voices from the past.”

But experts don’t know exactly what the writing says. Finding other examples of Olmec writing could help decipher the puzzle.

“We could have whole sets of ancient writing which will basically make ancient people speak to us directly,” says Houston. “There are many puzzles to be solved, and this is just one of them.”

1According to the passage, what items do scientists often use to learn more about the past?

AClothing and jewelry.                   BBooks and stones.

CKnives and chairs.                      DPeople and animals.

2What is important about the stone block mentioned in the passage?

AIt proves that people lived in this part of the world more than 3,000 years ago.

BIt allows scientists to translate the ancient language used in this area.

CIt is evidence of the oldest form of writing ever found in the Americas.

DIt shows the people of the area have a written language.

3Why are scientists interested in ancient languages?

AIt can allow them to better understand ancient societies.

BSo they can speak directly with ancient people.

CIt will help learn about the origins of modern languages.

DThey can learn stories told during that time.

4The underlined expression “decipher the puzzle”(paragraph 6) most probably means “      ”.

Adiscover when the Olmec people lived

Blearn why the Olmec civilization disappeared

       Clearn how to speak Olmec

D find the meaning of the Olmec language

5Which is probably the best title for the passage!

AWorld’s First Book                               BOldest Writing in the New World

A serous problem for today’s society is who should be responsible for our elderly and how to improve their lives. It is not only a financial problem but also a question of the system we want for our society. I would like to suggest several possible solutions to this problem.

First, employers should take the responsibility for their retired employees. To make this possible, a percentage of profits should be set aside for this purpose. But when a company must take life-long responsibility for its employees, it may suffer from a commercial disadvantage due to higher employee costs.

Another way of solving the problem is to return the responsibility to the individual. This means each person must save during his working years to pay for his years of retirement. This does not seem a very fair model since some people have enough trouble paying for their daily life without trying to earn extra to cover their retirement years. This means the government might have to step in to care for the poor.

In addition, the government could take responsibility for the care of the elderly. This could be financed through government taxes to increase the level of pensions. Furthermore, some institution should be created for senior citizens, which can help provide a comfortable life for them. Unfortunately, as the present situation in our country shows, this is not a truly viable answer. The government can seldom afford to care for the elderly, particularly when it is busy trying to care for the young.

One further solution is that the government or social organizations establish some working places especially for the elderly where they are independent.

To sum up, all these options have advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that some combination of these options may be needed to provide the care we hope to give to our elderly generations.

1What is the passage mainly about?

AThe problem faced by the old in society.

BWhy we should take responsibility for the old

CHow we can improve the lives of the old

DWhere the old can go to get their pensions.

2According to the passage, how can the government help to improve the lives of retired people?

ASet aside some profits to help people with problems after they retire.

BIncrease savings levels of people during their working years.

CIncrease the discounts for food and transport for the old.

DMake available pensions for those who have retired.

3The underlined word “viable” most probably means         .

       Aimpossible.          Bpractical.             Cuseful.                Dsuccessful

4What can be concluded from the passage?

ATaking care of the old is mainly an issue of money.

BEmployers should allow their workers to retire at a later age.

CBecoming independent should be the goal of most old people.

DThere is no single solution to the problems of the old.

5What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this article?

ATo point out the need for government support for old people

BTo make general readers aware of the problems of retired people

CTo discuss some possible solutions to an important social problem

DTo instruct retired people on how they can have a happier life.
