Everyone needs friends. As the old saying goes, “ No man is an island”. In other words, no one can survive without the help and friendship of others. One can hardly live without a friend. Society is made up of people , and making friends is a very important part in our life. Friends can give you a lot. Firstly, if you have trouble with some problems, you can talk to your good friends and exchanged opinions. Thus you will feel comfortable and encouraged. Secondly, if you wish to do some physical exercises, such as playing table tennis, you can play with friends and have a good time. In short, we need friends.

But what is true friendship? Some people think friends are people whom they can play with, others believe true friendship lies in similar interests. However, in my opinion, “A friend in need is a friend indeed”. True friendship can encourage you when you are in difficulties . True friends can give you warnings against danger. True friends not only share with you your joy and happiness but also your trouble and anxiety. When you need him he will give you a hand and spare no efforts. Of course, these principles are the same to you when you treat your friends.

This week was busier than usual, and I was very tired today. All I wanted to do was to go home and enjoy a bowl of good hot soup. But when I saw my daughter’s car, I knew that it was Bryan’s night. Since his parents separated, I had tried to have my six-year-old grandson spend a few hours with me at least once a week. I had always tried to make it a special time for him. We did many interesting things; Bryan loved all these activities, and so did I. But today I had to give up our evening. I said how tired I was feeling. “Bryan, I’m sorry. Tonight I don’t feel like having fun or playing games. We’ll have our night together some other time.” I saw the sadness in Bryan’s eyes. He said, “I like soup, Grandma.” I knew he meant “Please don’t send me away. Please let me stay.” I saw the shadow (阴影) in Bryan’s eyes. Something else was changing. Maybe he thought I wouldn’t want to have him come any more — not tonight, not next week, not ever. Finally, I said OK. I was glad to see his eyes light up. After I put the soup on the stove (炉子) and turned on the TV, I fell asleep.

When I woke up, there was a coat over my legs, and the soup was gone. Bryan was on the floor, reading a coloring book and watching a television show at the same time. The poor boy must have been so bored (烦躁的)! When he found I was awake, he ran over and gave me a big hug. “I love you, Grandma,” he said. “Haven’t we had a nice time together?” His big smile and happy eyes told me that this time he meant exactly what he was saying. That was the keyword — together. We had done nothing exciting or special. But we were together.

8. What does the underlined part (in Paragraph 2) mean?

A. It was time to cook hot soup for Bryan that night.

B. This was the evening when Bryan stayed with his grandma.

C. Bryan would have a good rest that night.

D. Bryan would stay with his parents that night.

9. Why didn’t the author want to stay with her grandson that night at first?

A. She was too tired to have fun or play games with him.

B. She was sick and wanted to have a good rest.

C. She was too busy and had to work overtime that night.

D. She had to prepare soup for the whole family.

10. How many times did the author describe Bryan’s eyes?

A. 1.        B. 2.         C. 3.        D. 4.

11. From the passage, we can infer that _____.

A. Bryan’s parents separated so he had to live with his grandma

B. Bryan was sad that night because his grandma didn’t play with him

C. the author wouldn’t want to stay with her grandson any more

D. the author and her grandson loved each other very much

Tourism wasn’t as important as it is today. In the past, only people with a good deal of money could travel on holidays to other countries. More people travel today than in the past because there is a growing middle class in many parts of the world; that is to say, people now have more money for travel. Special plane fares(费用) for tourists make travel less expensive and more attractive than ever before. One person doesn’t travel for the same reason as another. But most people enjoy seeing countries that are different from their own. They also like to meet new people and to taste new food. Tourism causes many changes in a country and in people’s lives. People build new hotels and restaurants and train native men and women as guides to show visitors interesting places. There’re new nightclubs and other amusements. International tourism is clearly a big business.

What if there is a fire where you live? Here are some tips.

If you’re in a room with the door closed and you can’t see any smoke around the door, you can open the door carefully and slowly.   16  . If there is no smoke or heat, go toward your escape route exit.

If you can see smoke in the house, stay low to the ground as you make your way to the exit.   17  Smoke naturally rises. You’ll breathe less smoke if you stay close to the ground.

18    Also ask your parents if windows would be possible escape routes. Learn how to unlock the windows, open them and remove the screen if necessary. 19  Lots of kids are injured because they fall out windows.

20   But if there is a fire, you have to leave them behind. The most important thing is that you get out safely. It’s also important to know that you shouldn’t stay in the house any longer. Someone else can make the fire alarm call from outside. Once you’re out, do not go back in for the things, even pets. You can tell the fire rescue people about the pets that were left behind and they may be able to help.

A. Make sure you do this only in an emergency!

B. It’s normal to worry about your pets or favorite toys.

C. Never be too concerned about your pets or favorite toys.

D. Leaving the room for the outside should be your first choice when there is a fire.

E. In a fire, smoke and poisonous gases hurt more people than the actual flames do.

F. Exiting through a door that leads outside should be your first choice as an escape route.

G. If you feel a burst of heat or smoke pours into the room when opening the door, quickly shut it.
