A great French writer has said that we should help everyone as much as possible because we often need help ourselves. The small even can help the great. To this effect he tells the following simple story.

An ant was drinking at a small stream and fell in. She made desperate efforts to reach the side, but made no progress at all. The poor ant, almost exhausted, was still bravely doing her best when a dove saw her. Moved with pity the bird threw her a blade(叶片) of grass, which supported her like a raft, and thus she reached the bank again. While she was resting and drying herself in the grass she heard a man approaching. He was walking along barefooted and carrying a gun in his hand. As soon as he saw the dove he wished to kill her, and he would certainly have done so, but the ant bit him in the foot just as he raised his gun to fire. He stopped to see what had bit him, and the dove immediately flew away. It was an animal much weaker and smaller than herself that had saved her life.

I travel a lot, and I find out different styles(风格) of directions every time I ask How can I get to the post office?

Foreign tourists are often confused(困惑) in Japan because most streets there dont have names; In Japan, people use landmarks(地标) in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.

In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat; in many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.

People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map; they measure distance in time, not miles. How far away is the post office? you ask. Oh, they answer, its about five minutes from here. You say, Yes, but how many miles away is it? They dont know.

Its true that a person doesnt know the answer to your question sometimes. What happens in such a situation? A New Yorker might say, Sorry, I have no idea. But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers I dont know. People in Yucatan believe that I dont know is impolite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A tourist can get very, very lost in Yucatan!

9. When a tourist asks the Japanese the way to a certain place, they usually ______.

   A. describe the place carefully          B. show him a map of the place

   C. tell him the names of the streets     D. refer to recognizable buildings and places

10. What is the place where people measure distance in time?

   A. New York.     B. Los Angeles.     C. Kansas.      D. Iowa.

11. People in Yucatan may give a tourist a wrong answer ______.

   A. in order to save time                 B. Los Angeles.

   C. so as to be polite                    D. for fun

12. What can we infer from the text?

   A. Its important for travelers to understand cultural differences.

   B. Its useful for travelers to know how to ask the way properly.

   C. People have similar understandings of politeness.

   D. New Yorkers are generally friendly to visitors.

Travel Tips from the Budget Traveler

Plan in advance.

Passengers planning to travel by plane or train should buy their tickets at least one week before the trip. You can save money that way. There are often special airfares and rail fares if you buy your ticket more than 7 days or 14 days in advance.

Shop around.

Not all travel agencies or airlines change the same amount of money for airline tickets to the same place. Its a good idea to call several different places to get the best deal. Sometimes you can find really good flight prices on the Internet.

Stay over a Saturday night.

Some airlines offer low airfares if you stay over a Saturday night. This is because they want to attract the pleasure travelers. Pleasure travelers are usually able to stay over on a Saturday night. Business travelers usually want to be home with their families on Saturday nights.

Take a boat.

For some destinations, traveling by plane is not the only choice available. Most people travel from Japan to Korea or China, for example, by plane. This is because plane travel is quick and convenient. But you can make the journey by boat, instead. It takes more time, of course, but there are usually cheap deals for boat passengersand you have lots of time to enjoy the journey.

Travel with a friend or in a group.

Traveling in a group is often a good way to save money. If you travel in a group of 10 or more, you can usually get a good deal from airlines. Also, when you rent a car, you can share the cost instead of paying for it yourself. In addition, sharing with another traveler can help get a cheap room price at a hotel.

Join a Frequent Travel Program.

Many airlines offer special programs for regular travelers. These are called Frequent Travel Programs or Frequent Flyer Programs. Every time you take their plane, you get points. When you have enough points, you can get free flights from the airline.

13. A cheaper air ticket may be got by all of the following means EXCEPT ______.

   A. trying different travel agencies and airlines

   B. buying a ticket ahead of time

   C. buying a ticket on line

   D. shopping around the city

14. To get a cheap deal on a flight, which of these trips should you choose?

   A. Leave on Thursday and return on Sunday afternoon.

   B. Leave on Monday and return on Wednesday.

   C. Leave on Wednesday and return on Saturday morning.

   D. Leave on Friday and return on Saturday night.

15. The writer suggests taking a boat from Japan to Korea mainly because ______.

   A. its comfortable to take a boat

   B. the scenery on the sea is beautiful

   C. its cheap and you can enjoy the journey

   D. it is not far from Japan to Korea

Want to make a serious change in your health?  16  It might sound extreme because this diet excludes any foods that come from animals like dairy and meat products and all foods that are cooked at temperatures above 46 degrees Celsius. Essentially, the raw vegan diet focuses on raw plants, and there are good reasons why its quite popular these days.

Raw foodists believe that cooking food destroys important micronutrients(微量营养物).  17 A raw piece of broccoli(西兰花)is much healthier than a carrot that has been fried or boiled at a high temperature. Raw foodists believe that cooking food at high temperatures causes the addiction of harmful chemicals, such as carcinogens that can cause cancer. 18   Meat can be high in fat, usually contains chemicals and hormones, can be hard to digest, and so on. One raw foodist from New York City says that changing to a raw vegan diet has made a huge difference in his health, I feel better, I dont get sick as much , and I have a lot more energy.

Another reason to raw vegan is for the environment. 19  Meat production has been a huge problem for the environment, too. It is one of the leading sources of greenhouse gas emissions, along with cars and air conditioning. 20  Users talk about how they feel close to the Earth when consuming only raw materials. There is one health drawback to the diet, which is that it does not provide enough vitamin B12, calcium, and so on . This is easily remedied with diet supplements, though. The raw vegan diet may be the healthy choice of the future.

A.Health concerns that come with eating meat are commonly known.

B.Maybe its time to think about the raw vegan(素食)diet.

C.Then there is the spiritual side to the diet.
