In the future your automobile will run on water instead of gas! You will be able to buy a supercomputer that fits in your pocket! You might even drive a flying car!

Not all past predictions(预言) have been proven wrong. A few of them have been surprisingly accurate. Some great thinkers predicted the arrival of the credit card, the fax machine and even the internet years before they happened. But for each prediction that has come true, some others have missed by a mile. Many of these predictions didn’t consider how people would want to use the technology, or if people really needed it in their lives or not. Let’s look at some predictions from the not-too-distant past.

 Robot Helpers

Where’s the robot in my kitchen? Nowhere, of course. And he’s probably not coming anytime soon. Robots do exist today, but mostly in factories and other manufacturing environments.

Back in the 1950s, however, people said that by now personal robots would be in most people’s homes.

So why hasn’t it happened? Maybe because robots are still too expensive and clumsy. And probably the idea of robots cooking our dinners and washing our clothes is just too weird. At home we seem to be doing fine without them.

 Telephones of Tomorrow?

In 1964 an American company introduced the video telephone. They said by the year 2000 most people would have a video phone in their homes. But of course the idea hasn’t caught on yet.

Why? The technology worked fine, but it overlooked something obvious: people’s desire for privacy. Would you want to have a video phone conversation with someone after you just step out of the shower?

Probably not---it could be uncomfortable! Just because technology doesn’t always mean people will want to use it.

And finally, how about that crazy prediction of the flying car? It’s not so crazy any more! But a flying car remains one of the most wonderful technology ideas to capture our imagination. Keep watching the news---or perhaps the sky outside your window to see what the future will bring.

24. The passage mainly deals with______.

A. predictions that haven’t come true       B. predictions that can catch out imagination

C. new technology that can benefit out life   D. predictions that have come true

25. Which of the following is probably NOT the author’s belief?

A. Technology doesn’t always mean people will want to use it.

B. Many of the high-tech things people thought we’d be using simply haven’t appeared

C. Predictions don’t need to consider people’s practical use of the technology

D. High-tech things are not always convenient to people’s life

26. Robot Helpers haven’t been used in most people’s home because______.

A. robots can only do jobs in factories.

B. the kind of robots hasn’t been developed yet

C. people find it difficult to control the kind of robots.

D. the kind of robots won’t bring people practical use.

27. What can we learn about video telephones from the passage?

A. People haven’t come up with the idea to invent video telephones

B. People find video telephones bring lots of convenience

C. Video telephones are well accepted by people at home

D. Video telephones haven’t been popular at home.

DO you and your friends ever talk about your dreams with each other?

If you do, you might have noticed something interesting – some of your friends rarely remember their dreams, but some can always describe their dreams so clearly that it seems like they’re describing things that really happened to them. What makes those people different?

The answer is simple. There are two different types of dreamers – low dream recallers and high dream recallers.

Low dream recallers usually remember their dreams only twice a month. But high dream recallers are able to remember them about five mornings a week. And a new study suggests that activity in a certain part of the brain could have something to do with it, reported The Huffington Post.

Perrine Ruby, a French researcher at the Lyon Neuroscience Research Center, studied 41 people (21 high dream recallers and 20 low dream recallers) and recorded their brain activities.

She found that a part of the brain called the temporo-parietal junction(颞顶联合区) was more active in high dream recallers than in low dream recallers – both when they were sleeping and awake.

This brain area collects and processes information from the outside world. This means that high dream recallers know more about what’s happening around them. For example, when they are awake, they respond more strongly to hearing their own names, and when they are sleeping, they are woken more easily by sounds and movements.

By closely studying people’s brain activities, Ruby found that high dream recallers have twice as much “wakefulness time” during sleep as low dream recallers do. And it is during these short times of wakefulness that the brain memorizes (记住) dreams.

“The sleeping brain is not able to memorize new information,” Ruby told The Washington Post. “It needs to wake to be able to do that.”

This is not hard to understand. Just try to think of your own sleeping experiences. If you are restless(不安的)during the night, you are more likely to remember your dreams, but if you sleep well and soundly(香甜地), you tend to (趋向于)remember little in the morning, and this is because “you never get a chance to remember”, Robert Stickgold, a Harvard Medical School researcher, told The Washington Post.

28. According to the article, high dream recallers ______.

A. have very little brain activity during sleep

B. can remember their dreams clearly

C. don’t know how to describe their dreams

D. remember their dreams twice a week

29. Compared to high dream recallers, low dream recallers ______.

A. have higher sleep quality

B. have more sleepless nights

C. are more easily woken at night

D. respond faster when hearing their names

30. What is the main purpose of the last paragraph?

A. To show the benefits of being a low dream recaller.

B. To suggest what to do to become a low dream recaller.

C. To arouse readers’ interest in future studies.

D. To further explain Ruby’s quotation.

5.

Yellow fever is a disease in warm lands that is found mainly along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. It was first noticed in America, but may have come from Africa and reached the New World soon after Columbus. Yellow fever was one of the most feared diseases in the United States, where many died in repeated outbreaks. An outbreak, which was to lead to surprising development, was one that happened in Cuba during the Spanish-American War.

An army group under Walter Reed was sent there in June 1900 with orders to give special attention to questions about the cause and prevention of yellow fever. In many experiments, he proved the truth of an idea advanced in 1881 by a Cuban doctor that the city type of mosquitoes passed on the disease. They are born in pools of quiet and warm water, within a short distance of people’s homes.

So a general came to Havana with orders from the United States government to dry up these pools. He carried out the task so well that the mosquitoes disappeared. Yellow fever never returned to Havana. A few years later the same general successfully repeated this operation in Panama and in this way made the building of the Panama Canal possible. It all seemed so simple. End the mosquitoes, end the disease. Man even began to dream of getting rid of yellow fever from the world.

   D. man has known the cause of yellow fever and has achieved some success.
