Once Dr. Mellinkoff invited me to join him at the hospital to discuss interesting cases with his students. The case at hand was a Guatemalan man, aged 34, who had a fever and many other medical problems. His condition was not improving, and there was not much hope he would live.

Dr. Mellinkoff asked to see the patient. He introduced himself in Spanish and, in a very gentle voice, asked how he felt. The patient smiled and said everything was all right. Then the doctor asked if he was able to eat. The patient said that he had no desire to eat.

“ Are you getting food you like? ”

The patient said nothing.

“ Do you get the kind of food you have at home? ”

The answer was no.

The doctor put his hand on the man’s shoulder and his voice was very soft.

“ If , you had food that you liked , would you eat it? ”

“ Yes , yes. ” the patient said.

The change in the patient’s appearance couldn’t have been more obvious. Nothing was said , but it was easy to tell that a message had been sent and had also been received.

Later, the doctor asked why the Guatemalan man wasn’t getting food he could eat. One of the students said, “ We all know how difficult it is to get the kitchen to make special meals. ”

“ Suppose, ” the doctor replied, “ you felt a certain medicine was absolutely necessary but that our hospital didn’t carry it, would you accept defeat or would you insist the hospital meet your request? ”

“ I would probably insist, ” the student said.

“ Very well, ” the doctor said. “ You might want to try the same method in the kitchen. It won’t be easy, but I can help you. Meanwhile, let’s get some food inside this man as fast as possible, and stay with it. Or he’ll be killed by hunger. By the way, there must be someone among you who can speak Spanish. If we want to make real progress, we need to be able to talk with him. ”

Three weeks later, Dr. Mellinkoff told me that the Guatemalan man had left the hospital under his own power. It takes more than medicine to help sick people; you also have to talk to them and make them comfortable.

23. Which of the following words can be used to describe Dr. Mellinkoff ?

“Beating is a sign of affection, cursing ()is a sign of love.”

Many may not expect to hear the words of the old Chinese saying in these modern times—with parents wealthier and better educated than they have ever been—but experts say they still ring true.

Today, it seems, Chinese parents are more likely to send their children to precollege military academies in the United States in the hope that some tough love will pave the way to success.

“Good education doesn’t mean letting your children enjoy privileges, especially our boys.” said Song Wenming, an entrepreneur (企业家)in Jinhua’East China’s Zhejiang province. “They should be raised in tough conditions to know what to fight for in the future.”

In August, Song sent his 17yearold son to Valley Forge Military Academy (VFMA) in Pennsylvania. And he is far from alone, even though it takes a lot of money—around $48,000 per year—to send a child to a strict military school.

Statistics show that an increasing number of Chinese students have been registering with such academies.

A few years ago, there were no Chinese students at Valley Forge. Today, there are 28.“All of the Chinese students at Valley Forge came from wealthy families; some of them were spoiled.” said Jennifer Myers, director of marketing and communications at the school.

Song’s only son, Song Siyu, had a rocky start during his first six weeks at the school. The teenager said he went to the school voluntarily but did not expect it to be as difficult.

Now, three months later, he has perfected the art of taking a bath in 35 seconds, finishing a meal without looking at his food, and making his bed with precision. He can even take criticism, no matter how unreasonable.

“The training is hard but I know it is good for selfdevelopment of individuals.” said Song Siyu. “The endless training and scolding are just ways to build up our character; they are not personal.”

But his enthusiasm is not universal. Ten of the 13 Chinese students who joined the academy this year have transferred to other schools.

But for those who stick with it, there is a reward for all the hard work.

25. From the second paragraph, we can know the old Chinese saying ________ .

A. is out of date in modern times           B. is disagreed by rich parents

C. is still worth trusting                  D. is deeply believed by better educated parents

26. The underlined sentence means that _________.

A. Song sent his only son to military schoolso he feels lonely

B. Song is the only one who sends his child to military school

C. there are other people sending their children to military school besides Song

D. the fee of the military school is so high that only Song can afford it

27. How many Chinese students are there at Valley Forge before this year?

A. 10.        B. 13.           C. 15.            D. 25.

28. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?

A. It's likely that more and more Chinese students will attend VFMA.

B. Most Chinese parents approve of educating their children by beating and cursing nowadays.

C. Song Siyu had no difficulty in adjusting to the life at VFMA.

D. Most Chinese students support the way of education at VFMA.

A new method of delivering data, which uses the visible spectrum (光谱) rather than radio waves, has been tested in a working office.

Li-fi can deliver internet access 100 times faster than traditional wi-fi, offering speeds of up to 1Gbps (gigabit per second). It requires a light source, such as a standard LED bulb, an internet connection and a photo detector.

It was tested this week using a li-fi-enabled light bulb to transmit data at speeds of 1Gbps. Laboratory testes have shown theoretical speeds of up to 224Gpbs. When tested in an office, it allowed workers to access the internet and in an industrial space, where it provided a smart lighting solution. Chief executive Deepak Solanki said that the technology could reach consumers “within three or four years”.

The term li-fi was first coined by Prof Haas, who demonstrated the technology at a Ted conference in 2011. His talk, which has now been watched nearly two million times, showed an LED lamp streaming video. Prof Haas described a future when billions of light bulbs could become wireless hotspots.

One of the big advantages of li-fi is the fact that, unlike wi-fi, it does not interfere with other radio signals, so could be used on aircraft and in other places where interference is an issue.

However, the technology also has its drawbacksmost notably the fact that it cannot be used outdoors in direct sunlight, because that would interfere with its signal. Neither can the technology travel through walls so initial use is likely to be limited to some places.

29. Which of the following will be the best title of this passage?

   A. The drawbacks of traditional Wi-fi            B. The advantages of Li-fi

   C. Li-fi 100 times faster than Wi-fi                D. Li-fi and Wi-fi

30. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

   A. Traditional wi-fi can reach speeds of up to 1Gbps.

   B. The new technology has been put into use by consumers.

   C. Deepak Solanki showed the new technology at a conference in 2011.

   D. Li-fi can’t be used without a light source, an internet connection or a photo detector.

A child’s birthday party doesn’t have to be a hassle; it can be a basket of fun, according to Beth Anaclerio, an Evaston mother of two, aged 4 and 18 months.
“Having a party at home usually requires a lot of running around on the part of the parents, and often the birthday boy or girl gets lost in wild excitement. But it really doesn’t have to be that way,” said Anaclerio. Last summer, Anaclerio and her friend Jill Carlisle, a Northbrook mother of a 2-year -old, founded a home party-planning business called “A Party in a Basket.” Their goal is to help parents and children share in the fun part of party planning, like choosing the subject or making a cake, while they take care of everything.
Drawing on their experiences as mothers, they have created 10 ready-to-use, home party packages. Everything a family needs to plan a party, except the cake and ice cream, is delivered to the home in a large basket.

“Our parties are aimed for children 2 to 10,” Anaclerio said, “and they’re very interactive and creative in that they build a sense of drama based on a subject. For example, at the Soda Shoppe party the guests become waiters and waitresses and build wonderful ice cream creations.”
The standard $ 200 package for eight children includes a basket filled with invitations, gifts, games and prizes, paper goods, a party planner and the like. For more information, call Anaclerio at 708-864-6584 or Carlisle at 708-205-9141.

34. The main purpose of writing this text is ________.

A. to share information about party planning
