                     Kids need to get moving!

It’s a back-to-school season, which is also a period of time parents decide on extracurricular activities for their kids. Will it be swimming lessons? Hockey ? Cooking classes? The possibilities are endless and our courses&Programs section of our website is filled with information about various actibities.

But in addition to a glee club or dance classes ,try to make sure your kids have some free time so they can go outside and run around. Canadian children are not nearly as active as they should be and parents are largely responsible , according to ParticipACTION, a famous national health organization. At least part of the reason is what the organization refers to as “the protection paradox(悖论).”

The organization suggests that parents start to loosen the reins(缰绳). Kids will be more active when they’re outside and have the freedom to take risks. Yes, your kid may get injured, but a study shows most injuries are relatively minor-major injures are rare. And stranger danger isn’t so big a problem as you think. The chances of a child being abducted(诱拐)by a total stranger are about one in 14 million.

Throughout the Course&Programs section of our website, we’ve included plenty of articles and local information to help make sure your kids get enough healthy exercise and other activities that will help them develop their artistic skills. We hope that whichever you choose, it will involve physical activity for your kids.

To me , everyone has at least one talent, and while it sometimes takes you a lifetime to find, it does exist.

One sunny afternoon in 1953, we went out to the school’s playground for our gym class. The teacher taught us various track and field events . I was a loser in all of them. Then came the javelin(标枪). Finally ,when everyone had a chance to throw, the longest throw went about 30 yards. Now it was my turn. I raised the javelin over my head, took six quick steps and let it go . I watched as the javelin took off. As it went past the 50-yard mark, it was still going. Then people began cheering. Nobody could believe what little Orowitxz had just done.

The very next day I began practicing with it , and every day that summer –for six hours or more---I would throw it in a nearby schoolyard. With an eye to the Olympics, I continued to work out until one day I could go into a college. But not warming up properly, I tore some tissues in my left shoulder, so I gave up my dream of attending the Olypics.

Several years later, a co-worker, who was a hopeful actor, asked for help in learning his part. When I began reading the script(剧本) , the same kind of fascination that took hold of me when I picked up the javelin appeared. Immediately I attended an acting school. That led to small parts in movies, which at last led me to another area-----directing.

I feel strongly that we must keep our minds open; we can’t let ourselves be discouraged or depressed when the talent doesn’t readily appear. Yet when it does, we must be prepared to get hold of it right away.

24. What did we know about the writer in 1953?

A. He found his true talent.

B. He was bad at all the subjects.

C. Many of his classmates didn’t like him.

D. He decided to choose a career in acting.

25.Why did the writer give up his dream of attending the Olympics?

A.Because he didn’t get prepared.

B. Because he was more interested in acting.

C. Because he got injured in the left shoulder.

D. Because he lost interest in throwing the javelin.

26. When the writer wrote the text, he was probably a(n)______.

A.teacher B.actor C. director D. athlete

27. What doesn’t the writer probably agree?

A.Everyone has a talent although it’s hard to find it sometimes.

B. The joy of finding something that one can do makes one try his best.

C. One should be patient and active even if the talent doesn’t appear.

D. One can find his true talent only after suffering some failures.

Many kids would likely argue that their lunch periods are too short. While the precious breaks from class work are used to relax and chat with friends, students also need to scarf down a full meal to fuel them through the rest of the day.

But it is found that students need more than few minutes to consume those much-needed nutrients.Longer lunch periods are related to students eating healthier lunches, researchers found. The study compared food choices with the amount of time students are given to eat. Students with less than 20 minutes for lunch ate less—including nutritional fruits and veggies.

Nationwide, the average lunch period is about 30 minutes, according to a 2014 report from the School Nutrition Association. But researchers found that the amount of time available to eat can get cut down to less than 10 minutes.

Researchers reviewed 1,001 students in low-income neighborhoods in Massachusetts that had lunch periods of between 20 and 30 minutes in length. Students with less than 20 minutes to eat their lunches consumed 13 percent less of their entrées(主菜), 12 percent less of their vegetables, and 10 percent less of their milk compared to students who had at least 25 minutes for lunch. Students with shorter lunch periods were less likely to even select a fruit in the lunch line: 44 percent of kids with 20-minute periods picked up an apple or orange, More than 30 million children—half of all public school children nationwide, a record, according to the Southern Education Foundation—eat low-cost or free lunches every day under the National School Lunch program. With the 2010 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, school lunches have seen an examination in their nutritional guidelines, with an increase in whole grains, low-fat options, and fruits and vegetables.

While lengthening lunch periods and cutting class time may not be a option for many schools whose funding is tied to results of tests, researchers suggested properly arranging the lunch lines so that students can make the most out of the time they have.

28. The underlined phrase “scarf down”means _____.

A. eat   B. prepare   C. discuss   D. improve

29. If the students don’t have enough time to eat, they will____.

C. lack adequate nutrition       D. have to make a hard choice

30. What is the best title of the text?

A. Want kids to eat healthier school lunches? Give them time .

B. The 2010 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act? How to keep slim?

C. Better habits affect students’ health? Give them a hand.

D. The National School Lunch program will result better. How ?

31. Some schools are reluctant(不情愿) to cut school time , because_____.

A. they are afraid of criticism from parents .

B. they want to begin the proper lunch lines .

C. the bad behavior in the test will affect the school fund.

Noise is one of the problems that have come with industrial advancement and progress in urban environments. It has significantly increased with the invasion (侵入)of social media websites and modern technology in homes , streets, schools and the workplace.

While many people are unaware of the effects of noise pollution, experts say there are many psychological, health and mental effects of noise on human beings. Dr Maher Yaqoub, ear, nose and throat specialist, said, “When we go home to relax, we hear noise coming from modern devices such as smart phones and tablets that exist in nearly all houses. At the workplace, we hear noise produced by devices used at the workplace. On the way home, we are affected by the car horns and the like. All these sources of noise can have negative effects on human beings.”

Recent studies on the issue have shown that many people suffer from increasing hearing loss due to exposure to constant noise. Infants and the elderly are more easily affected by noise –related damage than others. “In fact , noise can destroy a child’s hearing ability and have impact on his health as well,” Yaqoub said.

Dr Alaa AL-Tabee, psychological and neurological (神经学的)disease specialist, said noise has negative impact on the psychological and health conditions of humans. It influences their performance at work or school as well as the way they communicate with others. Being exposed long to noise affects nerves and makes one feel dissatisfied and frightened because it harms the brain and reduces its activity. The end result is always discomfort and confusion.

Noise can cause mental stress and leave the mind unable to understand and process information. A person’s level of alertness and ability to calculate are influenced as well. What would you do when you just can’t get yourself to do your homework? You know it has to be done. 36 How are you going to get yourself motivated (激励)and what is the best way? Here are some tips.
