I believe that we should talk to strangers. By talking with strangers, our lives can be affected in ways that are unusual.

I worked in a restaurant in Chicago ,and I spent most of my time on work and hardly joined in “real” conversations. I didn’t talk to unknown people. Similarly, I never knew the name of the woman I rode the train with every day, but the process ended in a life-changing way.

One night, an old man , probably in his eighties, came in and sat beside me. I noticed that he came in week after week and always sat beside me. Slowly , I began having short conversations with him. His name was Mr. Rodgers. I learned that he and his wife had gone to dinner and watched a movie every Saturday . After she died, he carried on the tradition alone. I began looking forward to his coming in and telling me his stories.

As the weeks went on, I began to enjoy talking with Mr. Rodgerrs. We talked about his wife, his days flying in the war, and his son who had grown up and moved away. Eventually, we began to talk about my dream and my experience.

About four months after meeting Mr. Rodgers, I received a call from a nurse telling me that Mr .Rodgers was in hospital. He was experiencing an emergency heart surgery. I immediately drove to the hospital to see him .The first thing he did was thank me for helping him so much in his life. At first I didn’t know what he was referring to . Then I remembered that about three weeks earlier, he was complaining about chest pains and I gave him the telephone number of a doctor I know.

After meeting Mr.Rodgers, I have learned that strangers can become friends and that life can be much more enjoyable. I recently find myself really talking to customers at the restaurant. I have had a lot more fun, and the time has gone by faster.

Job seekers are trying to find positions because so many job openings are never even advertised online. The “hidden job market”is very real ,and it is causing frustration (挫折)among job seekers . You can find these jobs by determining what a company needs . Here are some ways to uncover those hidden job openings:

Target (….为目标)the company. Most companies now have their internal (内部的) job boards where they will post all job openings. Determine a list of companies you want to work for, find their job boards ,and then apply directly . This is the most direct way to find job openings in a specific company.

Build your social network. Find people at your favorite companies to connect with on Linkedin (商务化人际关系网).Join the same industry groups and network there , or ask friends to introduce you . Once you’re connected, show them your value by referring them to interesting articles and writing blog posts about the industry. Eventually when you see a job opening, ask them about it.

Be bold (大胆的). Reach out to managers at a company you’re interested in . Find out who’s in charge of the department and introduce yourself. Even if there aren’t any jobs available at the moment, try to set up an informational interview. Let them know you want to learn more about what their team does. This might not lead to a job right away , but they might think of you for the next job opening.

Create a new job . Stand out. Once you’ve connected with someone in the company, provide a way to a problem they don’t even know they have. This might lead to the creation of new jobs. Since you come up with the idea, they might take you on board to set your plan into action.

Louis Pasteur was born in Dole, France on December 27, 1822. His family was poor, and during his early education Pasteur was an ordinary student who enjoyed art and singing. However , when Pasteur was exposed to science as a teenager, he knew he had found his career.

In 1838, Pasteur went to college to become a science teacher. He then became a chemistry professor at the University of Strasbourg. He got married in 1849 and had five children. According to a recent study out of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton school, men with shaved heads are considered to be more manly, powerful and successful than those with longer hair or thinning(稀疏的)hair. Besides , in some cases, they are considered to have greater leadership potential (潜力). That may explain why the power-buzz look has become popular among business leaders in recent years.

Albert Mannes ,Wharton management lecturer, said he was encouraged to do the research after noticing that he was treated with more respect when he shaved off his own thinning hair.

Mannes did three experiments to test people’s impressions of men with shaved 344 subjects photos of the same men in two versions: one showing the men with hair and the other showing them with their hair digitally removed, so their heads appear shaved. In all three tests, the subjects reported finding the men with shaved heads as more dominant (占优势的) than their hairy counterparts (对应的人).

The study found that men with thinning hair were viewed as the least attractive and powerful. For those men, the solution could be as cheap and simple as a shave.

New York image consultant Julie Rath advised her clients to get closely cropped when they start thinning up top. “There’s something really strong, powerful and confident about laying it all bare (光秃的)she said, describing the thinning look as kind of raunchy(不修边幅的).

Not everyone needs a bare head. Rick Devine, 55, the CEO of Devine Capital Parners, advised executive candidates attracted by their clippers to keep their hair closely cropped, rather than completely shaved. “It is way too much image risk,” he said . “The best thing you can do in a business meeting is to make your look not an issue.”
