Any time we have to wait, many of us get nervous. Our minds are filled with all kinds of what-ifs.What if the results were bad? What if I failed the final? We try to focus on our work, but the bad thoughts surround us like a pack of wolves. We try to relax, but we just feel too anxious.

Many circumstances in our lives come with a waiting period, which can trigger our anxiety. We probably know that worry isnt very helpful and that it only hurts our health. But we also probably can’t stop. Below are the suggestions for reducing worry while we wait.

Take deep breaths. Sit in a comfortable position with eyes closed. Breathe in, count to five, and then breathe out slowly. Repeat as often as you need. Remember that our breath is available to us at any time. Even one deep breath can help.

Recite(背诵)helpful words. Come up with words of encouragement that you can tell yourself. For example, “I am strong and brave and can get through this.”“ I believe myself and my abilities.” “I am deserving.”

Lead a mindful life. Staying present focused is the key to managing anxiety. One strategy is to give tasks your full attention. For example, if you are doing the dishes, notice how your hands feel touching the sponge(海绵), notice the smell of the soap, focus on the sound  the water makes as it hits each dish, etc.

    A. share anxiety with others.

    B. gather our strength.

    C. make us energetic.

    D. inspire ourselves.

7. What does the author suggest in the last paragraph?

Middle Island, off the coast of southern Victoria, Australia, is home to the world’s smallest penguins—fairy penguins. There used to be hundreds of them on Middle Island before foxes got to them. “We went from a point where we had around 800 penguins down to where we could only find four.” says Peter Abbott from the Penguin Preservation Project. “Once 360 birds were killed over about two nights.”

That particular incident happened in 2005, but the problem had been building up for several years. Middle Island, where no people live, is separated from the mainland by a stretch of water measuring no more than 20 or 30m deep. At low tide, and when sand builds up in the narrow channel, foxes can cross from the mainland barely getting their paws(爪子)wet.

A chicken farmer suggested sending his Maremma dogs to the Island. The first dog which was sent to Middle Island is called Oddball. The dogs operate in the penguins’ breeding(繁殖)season, from October to March, spending five or six days a week on the island. Even when the dogs are not there, the smell they left is enough to keep foxes away. The fairy penguin population has gone back up to almost 200.

The project has been such a success that a movie called Oddball has been made about it. It has increased tourism, and in the summer months people can visit the island on a “Meet the Maremma Tour.” Many locals appeared as characters in the film. “My character was played by an American actor,” says Peter Abbott.“ I tell people it’s because they couldn’t find an Australian as good-looking as me.”

8. What happened to the fairy penguins after foxes appeared on Middle Island?

    A. They were frightened away from the island.

    B. They almost became extinct.

    C. They stopped breeding in breeding seasons.

    D. They daren’t go out at night.

9. How did the foxes reach Middle Island?

    A. By walking directly from the mainland.

    B. By following the tracks left by people.

    C. By swimming across the stretch of water.

    D. By building up sand in the stretch of water.

10. Why were Maremma dogs sent to the island?

    A. To kill more foxes.

    B. To guard the islanders.

    C. To leave their smell there.

    D. To protect the fairy penguins.

11. What made Middle Island famous?

    A. The movie Oddball.

    B. The fairy penguins.

    C. Maremma dogs.

    D. Meet the Maremma tour.

4.

Nowadays it’s believed that the largest contributors to air pollution are gasoline vehicles. They not only give off harmful gases but also dangerous and heavy metal particles(微粒) that can result in environmental dangers. We can’t stop using vehicles and thus stop air pollution right away. However, at least we can look for better replacements so that air pollution can be reduced. According to studies, hydrogen (氢)cars prove to be a better replacement for traditional cars.

A hydrogen car is a vehicle that uses hydrogen as fuel for its engine to work. There are two types of hydrogen cars. The first one is to use hydrogen as a fuel, and the second one is to use hydrogen fuel cells(电池) to provide power for the car. Hydrogen and oxygen react chemically with each other to produce electricity, thus starting the car.

There are many advantages of hydrogen cars. For example, hydrogen is available in plenty. Therefore, you needn’t worry about a lack of hydrogen. More importantly, no harmful gases are released as by-products .The only by-products are water and a little amount of heat so air pollution is prevented up to a large extent.

However, there are also some problems with hydrogen cars. For instance, in case of damage, the cost of repairing and replacing fuel cells is high. Worse still, hydrogen is a material which can burn easily, so it can result in a huge explosion of the car.

The concept of hydrogen cars is relatively new for most people. Research is still in progress to reduce disadvantages and increase advantages. Therefore, hydrogen cars are expected to contribute their bit towards making this planet better and healthier!

12. The main purpose of the passage is to tell readers_____________.

    A. to stop air pollution right away.

    B. the reasons for air pollution.

    C. the weaknesses and strengths of hydrogen cars.

    D. a new type of cars.

13. Which isn’t the by-product made by gasoline cars?

    A. Harmful gases.

    B. Hydrogen.

    C. Heavy mental particles.

    D. Carbon monoxide.

14. The author may disagree               .

    A. There is no chance that we quit using cars.

    B. Hydrogen cars produce water and a little amount heat as by-products,

       thus reducing air pollution.

    C. Hydrogen can be used as fuel for the engine of traditional cars.

    D. Hydrogen is easy to burn.

15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

    A. Hydrogen cars have been put into use.

    B. Hydrogen cars have a long way to go.

    C. Hydrogen cars made contributions to making this planet better and

       healthier.

    D. The concept of hydrogen cars is relatively new for most people.
