Around the world in 80 days-alone
Who knew? Well, we knew a little about Nellie Bly, the woman journalist of the 1890s. After all, she was once considered the most famous woman in the United States. But Elizabeth Bisland? Never heard the name. Let alone that she took the challenge to race Bly around the world. In 80 days. And alone, no less.
But they did. And in Victorian times when women seldom went to the store alone, let alone to Ceylon.
In Eighty Days, Matthew Goodman has woven(编撰) the story of these two women who were as different as the directions they took in the race. Bly, an energetic newspaperwoman who exposed evil(罪恶) wherever she found it, headed east. Bisland, a magazine reporter who preferred the classics, headed west.
Well, we’re certainly not going to tell you which woman won this race. But we will say the two women gave Goodman enough material to bring the 19th century alive, and to show that Bly, at least, ushered(引领) in the world of the famous people we know today. But as is still the way today, the famous people are a slippery slope as Goodman convincingly proves.
Using the writings of both women, Goodman, a creative writing instructor who has written two other nonfiction books, was able to catch what each was thinking and experiencing as they made their way on steam ships and trains. Bly was actually quite dismissive(轻视的) of her competitor. As for Bisland, she at first didn’t even want to take up the challenge.
Some may find what happened to the woman after the race as interesting as their life during the race. Maybe more. Their separate fates were also as different as the two women, right down to their tombstones(墓碑).
Almost 400 pages is a lot of time to spend with these two, and at times it can seem more a slog (hard boring work without stopping) than a race. But if you’re interested in strange little corners of history, Eighty Days won’t seem anywhere that long.
