When it comes to the question of where curry(咖喱), yoga and Bollywood films come from, the answer is definitely India, a modern country which achieved independence on 15 August, 1947. As one of the ancient civilisations, Indian culture has influenced and inspired other cultures around the world.

First, Indian food, especially its richly spiced dishes which are called "curry" outside India, has become a favourite all around the world. Most countries have their own version of Indian curry. In Japan it is very sweet and in Thailand an Indian-style chicken curry is served alongside Thai curries. In more cosmopolitan cities around the world, you can buy samosas, fried snacks with a filling of vegetables, spices and sometimes meat, and naan bread.

If you have eaten too many samosas and are worried about your health, try yoga. This is an ancient Hindu philosophy and system of exercises originating in India. Yoga is now recognised all over the world as an intelligent form of exercise. Regular practice can heal minor illnesses, change your state of mind, help you lose weight and work your muscles. More and more different types of yoga are being developed and the original poses have been adapted to suit modern needs. Yoga has become so fashionable worldwide that a lot of companies are using pictures of people doing yoga to sell their products!

One of the most famous things about modern Indian culture is the Indian film industry, known as Bollywood. The usual story is about a boy and a girl who love each other but their families don't approve. There is a lot of dancing and singing in the film as the boy and the girl try to convince their families to let them many. The increasing interest in Bollywood films inspired Andrew Lloyd Webber to produce the musical Bombay Dreams, which is the first Indian-theme musical shown on Broadway.

How much do you know about the English of Canada, the US' neighbour to the north? As the accents of people from Canada sound very similar to those of people from the US, it'd be easy to think that they share exactly the same language.

However, Canadian English and US English share as many differences as they do similarities. Founded as a colony(殖民地) of France in the 1500s,Canada later became part of the British Empire, before gaining independence in 1867. Its connection to the former British Empire can be seen in the way it spells certain words. For example, many nouns use “our” endings instead of “or”, such as “colour” or “ neighbour”. At the same time,French influences can be seen through Canadian English words such as “toque”,a word from French used to describe a woolly hat worn in cold weather.

But that's not to say that Canadian English has no identity of its own. Many words that are used to describe everyday things by Canadian people may leave English speakers from other countries feeling confused. A “parkade”, for example, means a multi-level parking lot, while "runners" are what Americans would call "sneakers" Language is one of the few ways we have left of making statements of local belonging since we now all dress the same, we all watch the same movies," Charles Boberg, author of The English Language of Canada, told the BBC.

Last Sunday afternoon, Sandra and I were eager to meet up with a man on Detroit’s east side to help him get ready for a job interview this week. But on the way, we spotted a dog lying near the road next to his owner. We thought he’d been hit by a car. My friend, Sandra Abrahamian and I, had assisted animal rescue groups before and we thought there might be something we could do, so we quickly pulled over to help.

His owner, a woman told us the dog’s name is Bosco, and she was walking him over a mile in the heat to her new home. She said Bosco was an outside dog and no one would give him a ride to her new place. That’s when she and a friend decided to walk the entire way. He was going from a life on a chain in one backyard to another. She said Bosco was having trouble breathing along the way, but they thought he could make it. But just a block away from their destination, Bosco fell down. We could tell he was suffering from heatstroke(中暑). She told us he had thrown up and could no longer stand. Bosco was out of breath quickly, his drool(口水) was also thick. Bosco’s owner said she wanted to give him away because she didn’t have time for him. She said he would never be allowed into her new “home” because her children have allergies(过敏症) and she worried he would dirty the carpet.

I made a call to Kristina Rinaldi of Detroit Dog Rescue to ask if they could help Bosco because it was clear that he was going to die without emergency care. To our happiness, Rinaldi said they could help. At once she told the people at Oakland Veterinary Referral Services that a dog which needed critical care was being rushed in and they must be ready to try their best to save him.

    Paragraph 1:

Sandra drove while I stayed in the back seat trying to comfort Bosco.

So Bosco is now being called Roscoe, whose critical care and recovery were estimated to be several thousand dollars.

    All Must Have Degrees

In a classroom in Seoul a group of teenagers sit over their desks in total silence. Study begins at eight in the morning and ends at half past four in the afternoon. And some even go back home at midnight. Like thousands of South Koreans, they are preparing for the important exam, which will largely determine whether they go to a good university or not. Degrees have become useful. Seventy percent of students who graduate from the country's secondary schools now go straight to universities.

Many more countries have seen a big rise in the share of young people with degrees, but South Korea is an extreme case. As technological reforms require workers to do many difficult and demanding jobs that they would not have done before, it seems to be reasonable to insist that more workers receive a good education than before. And a degree is an obvious way for bright youngsters from poor families to prove their abilities. People tend to earn more if they have degrees.

Employers do not have to pay for higher education and they are increasingly able to demand degrees to screen out the least motivated or capable. A recent study by Joseph Fuller and Manjari Romaan of Harvard Business School shows that companies routinely require applicants to have degrees, even though only a minority of those already working in the role have them.

The Economist's analysis found that between 1970 and 2015, the proportion of  workers aged 2564 with at least a bachelor's degree increased. Some of them are highly intellectually demanding jobs, such as aviation engineers. Others are nongraduate jobs such as waiting tables. Sixteen percent of waiters now have degrees, because probably in most cases they could not find jobs and live poorly. Today, having a degree is usually an entry requirement.

    (2019·浙江高考)阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Parents everywhere praise their kids.Jenn Berman, author of The A to Z Guide to Raising Happy and Confident Kids, says, “We've gone to the opposite extreme of a few decades ago when parents tended to be more strict.” By giving kids a lot of praise, parents think they're building their children's confidence, when, in fact, it may be just the opposite.Too much praise can backfire and, when given in a way that's insincere, make kids afraid to try new things or take a risk for fear of not being able to stay on top where their parents' praise has put them.

Still, don't go too far in the other direction. Not giving enough praise can be just as damaging as giving too much.Kids will feel like they're not good enough or that you don't care and, as a result, may see no point in trying hard for their accomplishments.

So what is the right amount of praise? Experts say that the quality of praise is more important than the quantity. If praise is sincere and focused on the effort not the outcome, you can give it as often as your child does something that deserves a verbal reward.“We should especially recognize our children's efforts to push themselves and work hard to achieve a goal”  says Donahue, author of Parenting Without FearLetting Go of Worry and Focusing on What Really Matters.“One thing to remember is that it's the process not the end product that matters.”

Your son may not be the best basketball player on his team. But if he's out there every day and playing hard, you should praise his effort regardless of whether his team wins or loses.Praising the effort and not the outcome can also mean recognizing your child when she has worked hard to clean the yard, cook dinner, or finish a book report. But whatever it is, praise should be given on a casebycase basis and be proportionate (相称的) to the amount of effort your child has put into it.

Though it is one of the faded memories of my life today, there are times when I remember his face clearly, especially his eyes. As he had yellow spots on his eyes we called him Spotty. He would have been a stray (流浪) dog, until he came to me.

I was seven years old. My dad had just got a new job in Nasik. We had moved into a rented house. It was raining very heavily on the day we moved.

It was a cold dark night. We had our meal and went to sleep. Somehow in the midnight I heard some strange sounds outside the main door. I gathered courage and looked out through the window and I was really amused with what I saw outside.

There was a small puppy lying on an old doormat which my mother had put outside the door. It was wet and trembling. At first it was difficult to see the little one. It was the yellow spots on its eyes that made me realize its presence.

It was trying to get under the doormat to avoid the cold air outside and it had managed to get in as I could see only its head outside the doormat. Was it sick or injured?

I felt pity for the poor soul. I went in and came out with an old towel. I went near the innocent one and held it in my hand and wiped the puppy till he had become dry. I took him into my room and made a bed for him with a woolen blanket and a small pillow. He seemed very healthy and comfortable in his new bed as he went to sleep immediately.

The next morning, everyone in the family came to know about the unusual guest. “Shall we keep him with us\” I questioned my mom.

Like any other parents would, my parents first totally refused my idea but my sister and I convinced them to keep Spotty.

Slowly Spotty got on with everyone and became one of the family members.

One day, Spotty returned from his daily walk with a broken leg.

Almost a year later, one midnight we heard Spotty barking breathlessly.

    阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Have you had a headache during a test? Have you ever been so worried about something that you have a headache or even cant sleep at night? If so, then you know what stress is.

Stress is what you feel when you are worried about something. This worry in your mind can make your body feel bad. You may feel angry, sad, scared, or afraid—— all of which can give you a stomachache or a headache.

However, there are different kinds of stress. Some kinds of stress are good and others are bad.

Good stress might happen when youre called to answer questions in class or when you have to give a speech. This kind of stress can help you to get things better done. For example, you may do a better job on your test if the stress pushes you to prepare better before the test. On the other hand, bad stress can happen if the stress lasts too long. You may not feel well if your parents are fighting, if a family member is sick, if you' re having problems at school, or if anything else makes you unhappy every day. That kind of stress isnt going to help you. And it can actually make you sick.

The best way to fight the stress is to have a balanced life. Make sure you keep yourself in mind: Sleep,Exercise, Leisure(休闲)and Food. If you get enough sleep and eat properly, and if you exercise and leave time for fun, youII probably feel less stressed.

I was responding to a call from a small brick flat(用砖做的公寓) in a quiet part of town. I assumed I was being sent to pick up some party-goersor someone who had just had a fight with a loveror a worker heading to an early shift at some factory for the industrial part of town.

When I arrived at 230 a.m. the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window. Under such circumstances many drivers just honk(按喇叭) once or twicewait a minutethen drive away. But I had seen too many weak people who depended on taxis as their only means of transportation.

Unless a situation smelled of dangerI always went to the door.

This passenger might be someone who needs my assistanceI reasoned to myself. So I walked to the door and knocked. “Just a minute” answered a frailelderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor. After a long pausethe door opened. A small woman in her 80s stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat like somebody out of a 1940s movie. By her side was a small nylon suitcase.

The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets. There were no clocks on the walls no equipment on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware.

“Would you carry my bag out to the car” she said. I took the suitcase to the cabthen returned to assist the woman. She took my armand we walked slowly toward the cab.

She kept thanking me for my kindness. “It's nothing,” I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated.”

The worst tourist (旅行者) in the world may be Nicholas Scottie of San Francisco. Once he flew from the US. to his hometown in Italy. He had some troubles on his journey. The night before, he stayed up late to deal with some emails, so when he boarded on the plane he decided to have a sleep. Hours later, he was woken up by some noise and he found the plane had landed.

As he thought he had arrived home, Mr. Scottie got off the plane . He thought he was in Rome. However, the truth was that the plane made a one-hour stop to get oil at Kennedy Airport of New York.

Mr. Scottie waited at the airport for some while, but nobody was there to meet him, he thought maybe they were held up by heavy traffic which was very common in Rome. He decided to give his family a phone call. Unfortunately, he found he had left his cellphone at the hotel in San Francisco. Therefore, he decided to go home by himself. While he was walking in the city, Mr. Scottie found that the old “Rome” had changed a lot. Many old buildings were replaced by high modern ones. He also found that many people spoke English instead of Italian and that many street signs were written in English. What made him most surprised was that drivers’ awareness of traffic safety was improved and he hardly found any driver speeding on the road. All cars were driving in line. The condition was widely different from that in the past. He was feeling proud.

Mr. Scotti knew very little English, so he asked a policeman (in Italian) the way to the bus station . He happened to meet a policeman who was also born in Italy and answered him in the same language. Mr. Scotti thanked him, left, quickly found the bus station and got on a bus. He looked outside of the bus window.

Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:30 a. m. When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.

I walked to the door and knocked, "Just a minute," answered a weak, elderly voice.

After a long time, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase.

"Oh, you're such a good man." She said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, "Could you drive through downtown?"

"It's not the shortest way," I answered quickly.

"Oh, I'm in no hurry," she said. "I'm on my way to a hospice  (临终医院). I don't have any family left. The doctor says I don't have very long. "

I quietly reached over and shut off the meter (计价器). For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.

Sometimes she'd ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.

At dawn, she suddenly said, "I'm tired. Let's go now." We drove in silence Lo the address she had given me.

"How much do I owe you?" she asked.

        "Nothing." I said.

"You have to make a living," she answered. "Oh, there are other passengers," I answered. She said thanks to me, but she looked so sad.

    阅读下面的短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。(7分)

Recently, a professor of philosophy in the United States has written a book called Money and the Meaning of Life. He has discovered that how we deal with money in our day-to-day life has more meaning than we usually think. One of the things he asks his students to do is to keep a record of every penny they spend for a week. From the way they spend their money, they often see what they really value in life.

He says our relation with others often becomes clearly defined when money enters the picture. You might have wonderful friendship with somebody and you think that you are very good friends. But you will know him only when you ask him to lend you some money. If he does, it brings something to the relationship that seems stronger than ever before. Or it can suddenly weaken the relationship if he doesn’t. This person may say that he has a certain feeling, but if it is not carried out in the money world, there is something less real about it.

Since money is so important to us, we consider those who possess a lot of it to be very important. The author interviewed some millionaires in researching his book.

Answer: The most surprising thing is why people give me so much respect. I am nothing. I don’t know much. All I am is rich.

People just have an idea of making more and more money, but what is it for? How much do I need for ant given purposes in my life? In his book, the professor uncovered an important need in modern society: to bring back the idea that money is an instrument rather than the end. Money plays an important role in the material world, but expecting money to give happiness may be missing the meaning of life.

    阅读下面短文,然后用60个单词左右概括短文的要点。

Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt.

In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block out disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and let ills in. A particular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546. Thus began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. Henry IV, King of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman had taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not go out.

Though the belief in the advantage of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18th century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War . Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea; clothes need to be whiter than white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far?

Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try to warn their children off touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist (免疫学家), encourages children to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter position is gaining some reason.

    阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

If you take a look at the best-selling books in the UK these days, it is almost certain that there will be a lot of autobiographies (自传) in that list. Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela and actor Michael J Fox have all written them. An autobiography is the story of a person’s life, written by that person. It is usually a very famous person who might tell us all about their childhood, how they became famous and any other interesting things that have happened in their lives.

Traditionally, someone would write an autobiography when they were older because they had had a long, successful life. However, these days there are many magazines with stories and photos of the stars which sell very well. Reality TV shows are extremely popular and lots of people become famous very easily just from being on the TV rather than being able to sing or act well. As a result, people become famous very quickly and as soon as they are famous, a lot of money can be made from writing an autobiography, even if they are very young.

So now you can find an autobiography from almost everyone who is in the public eye. Even though we can follow the lives of the stars very closely on TV or in magazines nowadays, we maybe don’t know how they live their lives from day to day. Autobiographies often give the information we never knew about the stars. The British public are very curious to find out more so they are very eager to read autobiographies.

Not every star wants to write though. Sometimes stars employ writers to write their life stories for them. The writer will interview the stars, listen to everything they want to say, record interviews and then write books based on their words. David Beckham did this with his book My Side.

Not everyone likes to read books regularly but they might like to read about the lives of stars. Autobiographies are helping to get more British people reading books. About 100 million autobiographies are sold in Britain every year. More stars depend on them for extra income and as more of these books appear in the shops, more people are sure to keep buying them.

Bullying isn’t just confined to the real world. According to the Cyberbullying Research Center, almost half of all young people have been bullied online. Cyberbullying is a form in which people harm other people online deliberately. And unlike the traditional bully, the electronic bully can remain anonymous, so we often don’t know who they are. Cyberbullying includes things like spreading lies and rumors online, sending or forwarding unpleasant message via instant messaging, text or on social networks. It’s becoming very common among teenagers these days. They are campaigns against cyberbullying and some places have adopted laws to prevent it.

Kate is a victim of cyberbully. It’s so bad that she doesn’t want to leave the house. Someone from school has put message on social media saying she’s ugly and she should die. It’s terrible.

On Nov. 25, 2016, Luo Er in the City of Shenzhen published an article about his 5yearold daughter's leukemia(白血病)to raise money for her treatment via WeChat, China's most popular messaging app. According to the WeChat account, Luo raised more than 2 million yuan.

However, he was flooded with considerable criticism. On one hand, he was revealed as the owner of three apartments. On the other hand, the Shenzhen hospital treating Luo's daughter confirmed that the fiveyearold leukemia patient was receiving the highest level of medical care, but said the cost of the treatment totaled 200000 yuan, with more than 82% of those expenses covered by government health insurance. That meant Luo raised 75 times his spending on his daughter's treatment via WeChat. On Nov. 30, Shenzhen's civil affairs authority said it had launched an investigation into the case.

Some Internet users said they thought the campaign may be a marketing exercise or even a downright fraud. If it were me, I would never use this incident to push my kid in front of the public,” one Internet user wrote on China's Weibo site.
