Owning a dog is associated with a significantly lower risk of heart disease and death, according to a comprehensive new study published by a team of Swedish researchers on Friday in the journal Scientific Reports.

The scientists followed 3. 4 million people over the course of 12 years and found that adults who lived alone and owned a dog were 33 percent less likely to die during the study than adults who lived alone without dogs. In addition, the single adults with dogs were 36 percent less likely to die from heart disease.

“Dog ownership was especially prominent as a protective factor in persons living alone, which is a group reported previously to be at higher risk of heart disease and death than those living in a multi-person household,” Mwenya Mubanga, a Ph.D. student at Uppsala University in Uppsala, Sweden, and the lead junior author of the study, said in a statement announcing its findings. The link between dog ownership and lower mortality (死亡率) was less pronounced in adults who lived either with family members or partners, but still present, according to the study. “Perhaps a dog may stand in as an important family member in the single households, ”Mubanga added. “Another interesting finding was that owners of dogs which were intended originally for hunting were most protected.”

The study, which is the largest to date on the health relations of owning a dog, suggested that some of the reasons dog owners may have a lower risk of mortality and heart disease were because dog owners walk more. “These kind of epidemiological (流行病学的) studies look for associations in large populations but do not provide answers on whether and how dogs could protect their owners from heart disease,” Tove Fall, a senior author of the study and a professor at Uppsala University, said in a statement.

“We know that dog owners in general have a higher level of physical activity, which could be one explanation to the observed results,” Fall added. “Other explanations include an increased well-being and social contacts or effects of the dog on the bacterial microbiome (微生物菌群) in the owner.” Fall added that because all participants of dog owners in Sweden or other “European populations with similar culture regarding dog ownership.”

    1. Why did the researchers do the study related to 3.4 million people’s health and the dogs?

           A. To help Europeans.                                      B. To find their association.

           C. To protect unhealthy adults.                           D. To reduce risk of heart disease.

    2. What does the underlined word “prominent” probably mean in Para.3?

           A. Universal.                B. Confusing.               C. Appealing.                D. Important.

    3. What’s the main idea of the text?

           A. Adults living with dogs are less likely to die.  B. Swedish people are very fond of animal pets.

           C. Keeping a dog is a popular and healthy hobby.                                   D Owning dogs reduces the risk of heart disease.

    4. What’s the writer’s attitude towards owning a dog?

           A. Positive                   B. Negative.                 C. Objective.                D. Contradictory.

It cannot be denied that we all want to succeed, whether it is in losing weight or learning the guitar. For those who have tried and failed, success seems difficult to understand. Why does one person succeed where another person fails? I have made a list of four habits to help set goals and achieve them.

    Identify your core values

Finding your core values is in line with creating inner motivation. Sit and reflect on what you value most. Pick a handful of things and actually write them down. Remind yourself of your values every day, and reflect on whether you are honoring those values through your work.

Pick a goal and focus on it

Choose one goal to start something large enough that will give you a sense of accomplishment, while adjusting well to your core values. Focus is key here. The more focused you are on one goal, the higher chance you have of success.

If you perform a great many tasks at a time, you might never complete your projects because they will take far too long.

    Set a deadline for success

To set a date or deadline for success is meaningful and necessary. Identify when you hope to achieve your goal. Keep it realistic, while not giving you too much time. By setting a time limit, you are making the process more real and planned.

    Stick to your goal.

Failure can’t be avoided to some extent when you take risks, by its very definition, the desire to succeed means you are risking failure. Many people tend to give up far too early. Don’t fall into this trap! Remember your mindset (心态) earlier. Know it will happen. A failure is merely you working out the details, and learning what works and what doesn’t. Use failure. Treat it as a good thing, and march on!

In your lifetime, you have many opportunities to succeed. While in the process you may encounter (遭遇) plenty of failures, but on condition that you stick to the four habits above, you will be absolutely successful sooner or later.

1.You would have a better chance to succeed if you _________.

A.reflect on your goal more                              B.are more concentrated on a goal

C.are more eager to succeed                              D.try your best to avoid failure

2.Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A.People are all eager to succeed in life.

B.Realizing core values can make inner motivation.

C.You are bound to succeed if you follow the four habits.

D.failure is sometimes not a bad thing.

3.What does the underlined word “it” in the passage refer to?

    A.detail.                      B.Failure.                     C.Goal.                        D.Success.

4.The best title for the passage could be _________.

A.Four Habits to Help You Succeed                  B.Make the right decision

C.Failure is the mother of success                      D.Find the core values of success

Customer loyalty(忠诚) is a big part in business. No wonder, then, that with new technology, membership cards designed to keep customers and encourage repeat buying have exploded around the world in recent years.

In the United States, the number of customer membership cards now stands at 2.6 billion, according to research by Colloquy. Of course, you may sigh up (签名)once to get an initial (最初 )discount on a purchase, which is really an appeal(吸引) for most people, and never go back. So Colloquy calculates that the number of active membership cards in the US, meaning a card used at last once in the past 12 months, totals 1.6 billion.

The membership cards are beneficial to companies. Just a 5 percent increase in customer retention(保留) typically increases a company's profitability(盈利性) by 25 percent. But the rewards for customers may be less clear. The advertised benefits of a membership card are often not well explained. A CVS Extra Care membership card program, for example, advertises *providing coupons(优惠券) for instant savings". But if you don't want the product in the first place, of what use is a coupon allowing you to buy one and then get the second for 50 percent off?

And if you check the fine print, plenty of restrictions(限制)apply to realizing the card's benefits.

What's more, companies can and often do change the items of their cards.

Membership cards typically require customers to sign up by providing personal information, including a home address, phone number and email address. Companies then track, analyze and store information about every purchase you make. They can create a very detailed customer profile(概况) including your habits, income, likes and dislikes. That information may be used to offer you great deals, but it may also be used to charge a higher price for products you really need or want.

    32. What do we know about membership cards in the USA.

    A. Most of them are used just once.

    B. Most of them are in active usage.

    C. They are usually valid (有效的) for one year.

    D. They are helpful in attracting customers.

    33. What doesfine print" probably refer to?

    A. Good deals

    B. Special services

    C. Detailed items

    D. Discount prices

    34. What does the author want to express in the last paragraph?

    A. It's truth that you get what you pay for.

    B. A discount today may cost you more tomorrow.

    C. Your purchase record can reflect your personality.

    D. Companies can recommend perfect products to you.

    35. What does the text mainly talk about?

    A. The debate one customer loyally.

    B. The dark side of membership cards.

    C. The scientist approach to management.

    D. The concern for personal information.

(2019·兰州一中高三月考)We've considered several ways of paying to cut in line: hiring line standers, buying tickets from scalpers (票贩子), or purchasing linecutting privileges directly from, say, an airline or an amusement park. Each of these deals replaces the morals of the queue (waiting your turn) with the morals of the market (paying a price for faster service)

Markets and queues—paying and waiting—are two different ways of allocating things, and each is appropriate to different activities. The morals of the queue—“First come, first served.” have an egalitarian (平等主义的) appeal. They tell us to ignore privilege, power, and deep pockets.

The principle seems right on playgrounds and at bus stops. But the morals of the queue do not govern all occasions. If I put my house up for sale, I have no duty to accept the first offer that comes along, simply because it's the first. Selling my house and waiting for a bus are different activities, properly governed by different standards.

Sometimes standards change, and it is unclear which principle should apply. Think of the recorded message you hear, played over and over, as you wait on hold when calling your bank: “Your call will be answered in the order in which it was received.” This is essential for the morals of the queue. It's as if the company is trying to ease our impatience with fairness.

But don't take the recorded message too seriously. Today, some people's calls are answered faster than others. Call center technology enables companies to “score” incoming calls and to give faster service to those that come from rich places. You might call this telephonic queue jumping.

Of course, markets and queues are not the only ways of allocating things. Some goods we distribute by merit, others by need, still others by chance. However, the tendency of markets to replace queues, and other nonmarket ways of allocating goods is so common in modern life that we scarcely notice it anymore. It is striking that most of the paid queuejumping schemes we've considered—at airports and amusement parks, in call centers, doctors' offices, and national parks—are recent developments, scarcely imaginable three decades ago. The disappearance of the queues in these places may seem an unusual concern, but these are not the only places that markets have entered.

    ATaking buses.

    BBuying houses.

10The example of the recorded message in Paragraphs 4 and 5 illustrates ________.

Athe necessity of patience in queuing

    Bthe advantage of modern technology

    Cthe uncertainty of allocation principle

    Dthe fairness of telephonic services

    Ajustify paying for faster services

Bdiscuss the morals of allocating things

(2020·成都市高中毕业班摸底测试)Please take a few seconds and think of your personal biggest goal. Imagine telling someone you meet today what you're going to do. Imagine their congratulations and their high image of you. Doesn't it feel good to say it out loud? Don't you feel one step closer already? Well, bad news: you should have kept your mouth shut, because that good feeling will make you less likely to do it.

Any time you have a goal, there is some work that needs to be done to achieve it.  Ideally, you would not be satisfied until you'd actually done the work. But when you tell someone your goal and he acknowledges (承认) it, psychologists have found it's called a “social_reality\”. The mind is kind of tricked into a feeling that it's already done.  And then, because you've felt that satisfaction, you're less motivated to do the actual and necessary hard work. This goes against the traditional wisdom that we should  tell  our friends  our goals, right?

In 1982, Peter Gollwitzer, a professor of psychology, wrote a whole book about this.  And in 2009, he did some new tests that were published. It goes like this: 163 people across four separate tests—everyone wrote down their personal goal. Then half of them announced their commitment (承诺) to this goal to the room, and half didn't. Then everyone was given 45 minutes of work that would directly lead them towards their goal, but they were told that they could stop at any time. Finally those who kept their mouths shut worked the entire 45 minutes on average, and when asked afterwards, said they felt they had a long way to go to achieve their goal. But those who had announced it quit after only 33 minutes on average, and when asked afterwards, said that they felt much closer to achieving their goal.

5What do the words “social reality” in Paragraph 2 mean?

    ACompletion of the goal.

    BNecessary hard work.

    CPeople's acknowledgement.

    DA sense of satisfaction.

6What does Peter Gollwitzer try to tell us?

AWriting down the goal is very helpful.

BAchieving personal goal needs more time.

CKeeping the goal secret makes people work harder.

DMaking the goal public makes people less satisfied.

7How did Peter Gollwitzer prove his idea about people's goal?

    ABy giving figures.

    BBy giving examples.

    CBy making a survey.

    DBy making comparison tests.

8What will probably happen if you tell your friends your goal?

    AYou will be more confident.

    BYou will not gain satisfaction.

CYou are less likely to realize it.

    DYou'll be much more motivated.

After years of observing human nature, I have decided that two qualities make the difference between men of great achievement and men of average performance curiosity and discontent. I have never known an outstanding man who lacked either. And I have never known an average man who had both. The two belong together.

Together, these deep human urges (驱策力) count for much more that ambition. Galileo was not merely ambitious when he dropped objects of varying weights from the Leaning Tower at Pisa and timed their fall to the ground. Like Galileo, all the great names in history were curious and asked in discontent, “Why? Why? Why?”

Fortunately, curiosity and discontent don’t have to be learned. We are born with them and need only recapture them.

“The great man,” said Mencius (孟子), “is he who does not lose his child’s heart.” Yet most of us do lose it. We stop asking questions. We stop challenging custom. We just follow the crowd. And the crowd desires restful average. It encourages us to occupy our own little corner, to avoid foolish leaps into the dark, to be satisfied.

Most of us meet new people, and new ideas, with hesitation. But once having met and liked them, we think how terrible it would have been, had we missed the chance. We will probably have to force ourselves to waken our curiosity and discontent and keep them awake.

How should you start? Modestly, so as not to become discouraged. I think of one friend who couldn’t arrange flowers to satisfy herself. She was curious about how the experts did it. How she is one of the experts, writing books on flower arrangement.

One way to begin is to answer your own excuses. You haven’t any special ability? Most people don’t; there are only a few geniuses. You haven’t any time? That’s good because it’s always the people with no time who get things done. Harriet Stowe, mother of six, wrote parts of Uncle Tom’s Cabin while cooking. You’re too old? Remember that Thomas Costain was 57 when he published his first novel, and that Grandma Moses showed her first pictures when she was 78.

However you start, remember there is no better time to start than right now, for you’ll never be more alive than you are at this moment.

Challenging work that requires lots of analytical thinking, planning and other managerial skills might help your brain stay sharp as you age, a study published Wednesday in the journal Neurology suggests.

Researchers from the University of Leipzig in Germany gathered more than 1, 000 retired workers who were over age 75 and assessed the volunteers’ memory and thinking skills through a battery of tests. Then, for eight years, the scientists asked the same group to come back to the lab every 18 months to take the same sorts of tests.

Those who had held mentally stimulating(刺激), demanding jobs before retirement tended to do the best on the tests. And they tended to lose cognitive(认知) function at a much slower rate than those with the least mentally challenging jobs. The results held true even after the scientists accounted for the participants’ overall health status.

“This works just like physical exercise, ” says Francisca Then, who led the study. “After a long run, you may feel like you’re in pain, you may feel tired. But it makes you fit. After a long day at work-sure, you will feel tired, but it can help your brain stay healthy. ”

It's not just corporate jobs, or even paid work that can help keep your brain fit, Then points out. A waiter’s job, for example, that requires multitasking, teamwork and decision-making could be just as stimulating as any high-level office work. And “running a family household requires high-level planning and coordinating(协调), ” she says. “You have to organize the activities of the children and take care of the bills and groceries. ”

Of course, our brains can decline as we grow older for lots of reasons-including other environmental influences or genetic factors. Still, continuing to challenge yourself mentally and keeping your mind busy can only help.

    28. Why did the scientists ask the volunteers to take the tests?

    A. To assess their health status.                                      B. To evaluate their work habits.

    C. To analyze their personality.                                      D. To measure their mental ability.

    29. How does Francisca Then explain her findings in paragraph 4?

    A. By using an expert’s words.                                      B. By making a comparison.

    C. By referring to another study.                                   D. By introducing a concept.

    30. Which of the following is the best title for the text?

    A. Retired Workers Can Pick Up New Skills

    B. Old People Should Take Challenging Jobs

    C. Your Tough Job Might Help Keep You Sharp

    D. Cognitive Function May Decline As You Age

My mom takes pride in the fact that I was talking in three and four word sentences before I was ten months old. Some say its a gift while others simply think I talk too much.

As my thirties came to a close, I found myself reflecting on my life. Im very happy and have no significant regrets. However, when I looked back on those times of difficulty, I saw a clear common denominator(特征); I didnt seem to know when to stop talking. Whether it was hurting someones feelings, or having carelessly told a secret, the incident could have been avoided had I closed my mouth sooner. So I decided to practice the power of quiet.

To take this step, I needed to understand how people could sit comfortably in a group and not talk. Why does my husband feel completely content to say nothing in a conversation? Hes highly intelligent and has wonderful opinions but hell sit quietly and just listen. Even when hes asked a pointed question, hell answer with few words while still communicating effectively. What a talent!

Can you imagine being happy just listening? In surveying those I know who talk less than I do, I got two answersthey either didnt feel confident enough to speak up, or they just didnt feel the need to participate in the conversation. Of course there were other reasons for not talking, but these were the two most popular answers.

The first one didnt work for me. Im just fine letting people know what I think about them, and hopefully it will make the conversation much more interesting. The second one didnt work either. I do feel the need to participate. I feel it physically like an electrical pulse through my body; sometimes its so strong that it causes me to behave badly in the form of interrupting or speaking in an unusually loud voice. I had to look further.

An interesting thing happened on this journey to the power of quiet. During my weekly yoga class, it came to me like an answer so clear that the words rang in my head like soft, heavenly bells.

I talked too much so people would know I cared about them. It was my way of taking care of those I love. I decided before my fortieth birthday, that from that day forward, those around me would know I loved them, and cared what they thought and felt, but I was going to practice the power of quiet.

As my forty-second birthday approaches, I can say that deciding to talk less has been more about focusing on quality rather than quantity. Ive found that listening more shows those who I care about that I really do care how they feel. Now when I break in, it means more to them. Oh, sure, I still have my short periods of talking too much, but for the most part this has been one resolution that I can call a success.

    21. In Paragraph 3 the writer mentions her husband mainly ______.

       A. to show how one communicates effectively

       B. to explain the reason for his silence in a conversation

       C. to give an example of those who have the power of quiet

       D. to give her high opinion of his communication skills

    22. By I had to look further, the writer means she had to ______.

       A. look into the future in order to succeed in practicing the power of quiet

       B. try harder to prevent herself from talking too much

       C. survey people in other areas who talk little

       D. find out other reasons why she should talk less

    23. Which of the following best describe the writers character?

         A. Kind but pessimistic.                                   B.  Loving and active.

    C. Selfless but proud.                                 D. Stubborn and sensitive.

Raised in a motherless homemy father was extremely tightfisted towards us children. His attitude didn't soften as I grew into adulthood and went to college. I had to ride the bus whenever I came home. Though the bus stopped about two miles from homeDad never met meeven in severe weather. If I grumbledhe'd say in his loudest fathervoice"That's what your legs are for"

The walk didn't bother me as much as the fear of walking alone along the highway and country roads. I also felt less than valued that my father didn't seem concerned about my safety. But that feeling was canceled one spring evening.

It had been a particularly difficult week at college after long hours in labs. I longed for home. When the bus reached the stopI stepped off and dragged my suitcase to begin the long journey home.

A row of hedges(树篱)edged the driveway that climbed the hill to our house. Once I had turned off the highway to start the last lap of my journeyI always had a sense of relief to see the hedges because it meant that I was almost home. On that particular eveningthe hedges had just come into view when I saw something gray moving along the top of the hedgesmoving toward the house. Upon closer observationI realized it was the top of my father's head. Then I kneweach time I'd come homehe had stood behind the hedgeswatchinguntil he knew I had arrived safely. I swallowed hard against the tears. He did careafter all.

On later visitsthat spot of gray became my watchtower. I could hardly wait until I was close enough to watch for its secret movement above the greenery. Upon reaching homeI would find my father sitting innocently in his chair."Somy sonit's you" he'd sayhis face lengthening into pretended surprise.

        I replied"YesDadit's me. I'm home."

21What does the underlined word "grumbled" in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

Cthe feeling of being less than valued

Dthe loneliness of riding the bus home

Did you grow up in one culture, your parents came from another, and you are now living in a totally different country? If so, then you are a third-culture kid!

The termthird-culture kid (or TCK) was coined in the 1960s by Dr. Ruth. She first came across this phenomenon when she researched North American children living in India. Caught between two cultures, they form their very own.  46   About 90 percent of them have a university degree, while 40 percent pursue a postgraduate or doctor degree. They usually benefit from their intercultural experience, which helps them to grow into successful academics and professionals.

47  In fact many hardships may arise from this phenomenon. A third-culture kid may not be able to adapt themselves completely to their new surroundings as expected. Instead, they may always remain an outsider in different host cultures. Max, for example, experienced this fundamental feeling of strangeness throughout his life as a third-culture kid.    48  While this can be a way to create a network of friends all around the world, it can be difficult for a third-culture kid like Max to maintain close friendships and relationships.

For a third-culture kid, it is often easier to move to a new foreign country than to return to their home country. After living in Australia and South Korea for many years, Louis finally returned to Turkey as a teenager. But she felt out of place when she returned to the country where she was born  _4 She did not share the same values as her friends’ even years after going back home.

While a third-culture kid must let go of his/her identity as a foreigner when he/she returns, the home country can prove to be more foreign than anything he/she came across before . The peer group they face does not match the idealized image children have ofhome   50

As a part of the growing culture, third-culture kids may find it a great challenge for them to feel at home in many places

    A. Yet being a third-culture kid is not always easy.

    B. In general, they often reach excellent academic results.

    C. This often makes it hard for them to form their own identity.

    D. However, their parents can help them see the opportunities of a mobile lifestyle.

    E. Their experience abroad helps them gain a better understanding of cultural differences.

    F. Unlike other teens of her age, she didn’t know anything about current TV shows or fashion trends.

G.. Additionally, making new friends and saying goodbye to old ones will at some point become routine for a third-culture kid.

    The Scar of Love

Some years ago on a hot summer day in south Florida a little boy decided to go for a swim in the old swimming hole behind his house. In a hurry to dive into the cool water, he ran out of the back door, leaving behind shoes, socks and shirt as he went.

He flew into the water, not realizing that as he swam toward the middle of the lake, an alligator(短吻鳄) was getting close. The mother in the house was looking out of the window and saw the two as they got closer and closer together. In great fear, she ran toward the water, yelling to her son as loudly as she could. Hearing her voice, the little boy became alarmed and made a U—turn to swim to his mother. It was too late. Just as he reached her, the alligator reached him. From the dock, the mother grabbed her little boy by the arms just as the alligator snatched(抓住) his legs. That began an unbelievable tug-of-war(拔河比赛) between the two. The alligator was much stronger than the mother, but the mother was much too passionate to let go. A farmer happened to drive by, heard their screams, rushed from his truck, took aim and shot the alligator.

Remarkably, after weeks and weeks in the hospital, the little boy survived. His legs were extremely scarred by the terrible attack of the animal. And on his arms, were deep scratches where his mother’s fingernails dug into his flesh in her effort to hang on to the son she loved.

The newspaper reporter, who interviewed the boy after the trauma(外伤), asked if he would show him his scars. The boy lifted the pant legs. And then, with obvious pride, he said to the reporter,“Look at my arms. I have great scars on my arms, too. I have them because my mum wouldn’t let go.”

You and I can identify with(认同) that little boy. We have scars, too. Not from an alligator, but the scars of a painful past. Some of those scars are unsightly and have caused us deep regret. But, some wounds, my friends, are because we have refused to let go.

B.The mother was actually stronger than the alligator

Honesty comes in many forms. First there’s self-honesty. Is what people see the real article or do you appear through smoke and mirrors? I find that if I try to be something I’m not, I feel unsure of myself and take out a part from my PBA(personal bank account). I love how singer Judy Garland put it , “Always be a first-class version of yourself, instead of a second-class version of somebody else.”

Then there’s honesty in our actions. Are you honest at school, with your parents, and with your boss? If you’ve ever been dishonest, I think we all have, try being honest, and notice how whole it makes you feel. Remember, you can’t to wrong and feel right. This story by Jeff is a good example of that:

In my second year of study, there were three kids in my math class who didn’t do well.

I was really good at it. I would charge them three dollars for each test that I helped them pass. I’d write on a little piece of paper all the right answers, and hand them off.

At first I felt like I was making money, kind of a nice job. I wasn’t thinking about how it could hurt all of us. After a while I realized I shouldn’t do that anymore, because I wasn’t really helping them They weren’t learning anything, and it would only get harder down the road. Cheating certainly wasn’t helping me.

It takes courage to be honest when people all around you are getting away with cheating on tests, lying to their parents, and stealing at work. But, remember, every act of honesty is a deposit(储蓄)into your PBA and will build strength.

21The underlined part “appear through smoke and mirrors” in the first paragraph means “       ”.

    A. to be honest            B. to be unreal

    C. to become clear         D. to come from an imagined world

22Which of the following can best explain Judy Garland’s words?

    A. Be your true self rather than follow others.

    B. Don’t copy others or you can’t be the first class.

    C. Make efforts to be the first instead of the second.

    D. Don’t learn from others unless they’re excellent.

23What does the author expect to show by Jeff’s story?

    A. Honesty can be of great help.

    B. A bad thing can be turned into a good one.

    C. Helping others cheat can do good to nobody.

    D. One should realize the wrong in his bad deeds.

24In the last paragraph the author mainly wants to express             .

    A. one must be brave to be honest

    B. it’s difficult to be honest when others are not

    C. one should be honest when making a deposit

    D. honestly in one’s actions can help him in the future

Did you know that something as simple as the wallpaper on your computer can tell people a lot about you? According to researcher Donna Dawson, our computers say something about what we're like because they are part of our “personal space.”

A picture of a child or family on the screen often means the person cares deeply about their loved ones. A photo of the person surrounded by friends shows they value their popularity and probably work well with other people. On the other hand, pictures showing examples of past successes, like winning a prize may mean a person is only interested in themselves.

Pictures of nature and natural scenery tell people that you are driven to succeed and use the pictures to relax and remove the pressure (压力) in your life. Cityscapes, pictures of cities or towns, show that you enjoy travel and adventure. Most people with cityscapes as their wallpaper are optimistic (乐观的), happy people who feel even better thinking about the places they've visited or want to visit.

Pictures of animals show that you are optimistic and kind-hearted. You are often happy and you enjoy life and act young. Cartoons (漫画) or drawings show that you are a multitasker, someone who does many things at once. You have many responsibilities, but you deal with them well. That's one reason you like having something to smile about when you look at your computer wallpaper.

Then, what does plain blue wallpaper tell us about a person? According to Dawson, a person with plain blue wallpaper probably values their privacy and keeps work from becoming too personal.

    29. A prize photo as wallpaper suggests someone _____.

    A. has a strong wish to succeed

    B. is confident about himself or herself

    C. cares only about himself or herself

    D. works very well with others

    30. Those who look on the bright side of things are likely to have wallpaper like _____.

    A. pictures of nature and natural scenery

    B. city views or pictures of animals

    C. pictures showing their past successes

    D. photos of staying with friends

    31. What can be the best title for the text?

    A. Where to Look for Your Computer Wallpaper

    B. Computer Wallpaper Shows Your Personality

    C. How to Place Wallpaper on Your Computer

    D. Computer Wallpaper Interests Everyone

I was small for my age. I was shy and sometimes it was hard for me to make friends with others. However, learning came fairly easy for me. I was the best in most of my classes, but PE class was my nightmare (噩梦) and made me feel that I was not as good as the others. Miss Forsythe was our PE teacher. She was young and energetic. Everyone liked her. She said that we all had to come to her classes. No one could hide from Miss Forsythe!

One day she told me that she wanted me to play a game with another girl in a PE show. I was rather worried that I wouldn’t do a good job as she explained her idea, but she was excited. With her encouragement, I had no choice but to agree.

It was a "boy meets girl" game. I played the boy and my classmate, Margaret Ann, played the girl. We were dressed in evening clothes and danced around the floor. According to Miss Forsythe, I had to pick up Margaret Ann when we finished the dance. Since I was not strong enough to pick the tallest girl up, it was she who picked me up. I suddenly felt ten feet tall! It was a huge success and everybody applauded (鼓掌) for our excellent performance. What a wonderful ending! Afterwards, I smiled confidently (自信地).Miss Forsythe’s understanding and willingness to create a place for me in her show (which certainly did not need me) gave me some much needed confidence. She was and always will be my favorite teacher.

What to do if you don't feel popular?

Try to take part in activities. Call your friends. Plan to do something. The worst feeling is staying home alone, because it makes you feel even more lonely.

Try to make new friends. Choose friends carefully, not just because you think they're popular. And remember, making good friends takes time. Choosing a popular person to be friends with is okay if they are nice.

Be yourself (保持独立). If you want to become friends with someone who's popular, don't make yourself into someone you are not just to impress that person.

Be nice. Be friendly. Be outgoing (开朗的). But don't overdo it! Talk to trusted friends if you are feeling really bad. Or you might want to write it down ill a journal (期刊) or diary.

Do something special for yourself. You could take pictures of your friends, or collect their school pictures, and take a collage (拼贴画) to hang on your wall. This will remind (提醒) you, when you are feeling unpopular, that you really do have friends.

Think up your own ideas. These suggestions might not work for everyone.

What to do if you have a problem with your teacher?

Talk to your parents, or another adult who will listen to you and perhaps can help. Talk to your friends. Maybe they have had problems with the same teacher, too.

Don't give the teacher a reason to have problems with you. Do your work, complete your task, attend the class seriously and take notes. Maybe you just need to give the teacher a chance (机会).

Try to find out what the problem is.

Talk to the teacher if you feel comfortable doing this. Don't be nasty (闹别扭的), but express your concerns (关心). Listen to the teacher, as well.

Just accept the fact that you're not going to love all your teachers.

    25. What do we mean by saying "not feeling popular"?

      A. Not liked by our classmates or workmates.

    B. Not doing what we want.

      C. Not showing any interest in anything.

    D. Not so happy.

    26. What does the underlined word "overdo" mean'?

      A. Do something too much or in an extreme way.

      B. Try your best to do something.

      C. Do something carefully.

      D. Work too hard.

    27. The writer

      A. believes that your friend will help you out if you take their pictures.

      B. suggests that you discuss the reason of problem with your teacher when you feel uncomfortable.

    C. wants you to know that students usually hates teachers.

      D. is not too sure if his advice will certainly work on you.

    28. What's the best title of this passage?

      A. Why We Have Problems at School.

      B. Always Be Yourself.

      C. How to Handle Problems at School.

      D. Don't Be Afraid of Problems With Others.

Being lonely in the crowd might seem ridiculous. But according to a recent survey, the situation is all too common. Loneliness and other anxiety problems – worrying about life’s pressures – can even lead to self-murder.

An article in China Daily gave no reason for this other than the usual blaming of the post-80s generation. According to a high level official, young people suffering from discouragement are mostly “spoiled and have not been taught to be independent, responsible and express ‘thank-you’.” Well, how do you like that? First, I don’t think China’s youth are exactly spoiled. They certainly have more things than their parents did, but a lot of the money spent on them is for their education including various extra classes.

Discouragement and anxiety are now the fastest growing challenges in modern societies. We sense a lack of close friends who can talk to honestly and openly. In 1985, a US study found that one in ten people did not have such a friend. In 2006, it was one in four. It’s easy to see the connection between loneliness and discouragement. But what actually causes this increasing loneliness?

Surely, with Internet social networking sites such as Kaixin, we have more friends than ever. A new study has shown that the more time teenagers spend in front of computers, the less close they are to friends and family. Kaixin or QQ may be fun but it lacks meaning, compared to personal connections in the real world.

And then there are those endless online games popular with young Chinese but increasingly there are more interesting choices. For example, new sports such as skateboarding are starting to catch on(流行) in bigger cities, as is playing music in a band. These creative hobbies are done in a group and thus friendship can be stronger. Hopefully young people will also be drawn out of the Internet cafes and interactive computer games that in fact fail to recreate a real and interactive experience.

    28. According to the high level official, it is easy for teenagers lacking independence and responsibility to _______.

       A. become spoiled                      B. play endless online games

       C. suffer from loneliness and anxiety        D. refuse to express gratitude

    29. What does the writer think of the Internet social networking site Kaixin?

       A. Open but ridiculous.                           B. Honest and responsible.

       C. Real and fun.                                    D. Interesting but meaningless.

    30. It can be inferred in Paragraph 3 that _______.

       A. it’s now more difficult for people to find close friends to have an honest chat with

       B. parents focus mostly on children’s education rather than the personality building

       C. young people have no idea of expressing appreciation because of being spoiled

       D. teenagers will recreate a real and interactive experience to strengthen friendship

    31. According to the text, which of the following can help us avoid being lonely in the crowd?

       A. To stay long in Internet cafes.                     B. To focus on extra courses.

       C. To give up our own hobbies.                D. To play music in a band.

We all have found memories of taking a few lazy months off after the stress of A-levels. As we draw to the end of an academically and socially packed year, the idea of doing the same again is appealing.

But after graduation, there’ll be few occasions when we can enjoy such extended holidays, free to do as we wish. So now that summer has arrived, let’s take full advantage. It goes without saying that summer vacations are the perfect time to go traveling, especially if you avoid the pricey school holiday period.

Tickets go up greatly when you turn 26, so make the most of cheaper rates while you’re eligible. Finding a reliable company that won’t cheat you is extremely important, as is discovering a program that appeals to your own interests. There are plenty of websites where you can see other people’s recommendations.

Of course for most of us, money is tight—but to avoid overspending you can combine employment and adventure. Hannah Warn, a psychology student at the University of Winchester, is spending her summer at Camp America, an increasingly popular venture where British students enjoy a good time on a summer camp.

“Being thrown into something where I don’t really know what to expect is exciting.” she says.“It gives me a chance to experience being away from home in a different way.”

Those with a talent for languages might also consider working abroad as an au pair. The work may be challenging, but it’s a chance to involve yourself in a new culture while your employer pays most of the bill.

If you have an idea about the sort of career you’d like, getting work experience is wise. In many careers, graduating with only your degree to show for your three or four years just won’t make it. Send applications off early and to as many places as possible. Make sure you take a well-earned break this summer.

24.The author intends to tell us in the passage               .

    A. ways to make money in summer

    B. good memories of the school days

    C. stress goes away during the summer holidays

    D. tips on how to spend the summer vacation

    25.The passage implies that               .

    A. students can enjoy beneficial price when traveling

    B. students who quit school should pay more for travel

    C. students will be offered part time jobs in the vacation

    D. students will have a longer summer vacation than ever

26.The underlined word “eligible” in the passage means            .

    A. relaxed          B. outstanding           C. qualified       D. standardized

27.The author took Hannah Warn as an example to            .

    A. suggest Camp America offers jobs to students

    B. show psychology students are good at planning

    C. indicate Camp America serves English students

    D. imply students can travel around for nothing

The study followed 1500 middle-aged women and 1300 middle-aged men who all graduated from high schools in Wisconsin. The men and women were surveyed in 1993 and 2004 to look at the connection between how much authority they had at work and symptoms of depression.

The results showed that amongst men and women with lower levels of authority at workwomen had slightly higher levels of depression. This is normal since overall women suffer from depression slightly more than men.Amongst men and women with higher levels of authority at workhoweverit was women who had many more symptoms of depression than men.Men in authority actually had a 10% lower risk of depressionwhile authority increased the risk of women having depressive symptoms by 9%.

Dr Pudrovska continuedWhat shocked us is that women with job authority in our study are advantaged in terms of most characteristics that are strong signs of positive mental health. These women have more educationhigher incomesbetter jobsand higher levels of job satisfaction than women without job authority.Yetthey have worse mental health than lowerstatus(地位)women.

The cause of this discrepancy is not knownbut Dr Pudrovska saysYears of social science research suggests that women in authority positions deal with interpersonal anxietynegative social interactionsnegative stereotypesprejudicesocial isolation(社会孤立)as well as resistance(抵抗)from colleagues.Women in authority positions are viewed as lacking in the assertiveness(果断)and confidence of strong leaders. But when these women display such characteristicsthey are judged negatively for being unfeminine(不像女性的)This causes mental stress.

Menon the other handdo not have to face these kinds of negative stereotypes about their abilities.
