Dear Mr. Zhang,

We have held a discussion about whether it is good or not for a top student to share a desk with a slower student

Some are for the idea. In their opinion, everyone has strengths as well as weaknessesAlthough they are not good at lessons, they might do well in other fields like sports or artsTherefore, they can learn from each other, and they may develop friendshipIn addition, top students can help slower ones gain self-confidence by helping them with their lessons, which benefits them all

However, others don’t hold the same viewThey think some slower students are always making trouble, such as keeping talking in class and breaking school rules, which may lead to their forming bad habitsBesides, slower students often ask top students questions, which has a bad effect on their studies

In my opinion, I’d like to choose to share a desk with a slower student so that we can learn from each other and make progress together

                                                             Yours,

                                                              Li Ping

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。注意:每个空格只填一个单词。

Beggars are often seen sitting by the side of a street with heads bowed as people pass them bySome ask people passing by for a small amount of money and some just sit and wait to be given moneyA few use aggressive(侵略性的)behaviour to earn money

To solve the problem of aggressive begging, an “alternative giving” plan has been suggestedTen blue money boxes will be placed in busy places such as the market and the railway stationIt is aimed at encouraging people not to give money directly to beggars but instead to give money generously to local homeless causes

Supporters of this plan think it will be an effective way to solve the beggars’ alcohol and drug problemsBut the police are against the planThey argue that beggars who do not receive cash may commit crimes to satisfy their own needsThe homeless charity(慈善机关)says that the success of any plan will depend on its styleThey think that in a certain degree imaginative and positive plans may help to create local understanding and sympathy(同情).Most of the beggars dislike the plan because they think they will not get enough money from the boxes for their showers, food and clothes

Begging is a big social problem both in developing and developed countriesGovernments must play an active part in solving this problemTraining beggars to work and helping them to find appropriate jobs is one choiceThis is especially true for developing countries where many low-skill jobs exist

The public should also be educated to see a beggar not as dirty and dangerous, but as people who need understanding and help

All of us have read thrilling(惊险的)stories in which the hero had only a limited time to liveSometimes it was as long as a year; sometimes as short as twenty-four hours, but we were always interested in discovering just how the hero chose to spend his last days or his last hours

Such stories make us think and wonder what we should do under similar circumstancesWhat happiness and regrets should we find in thinking about the past?

Sometimes, I have thought it would be an excellent rule to live each day as if we should die tomorrowSuch an attitude would emphasize (强调)sharply the values of lifeWe should live each day with appreciation which is often lost when time stretches(延伸)before us with more days and months and years to come

Most of us take life for grantedWe know that one day we must die, but usually we picture that day as far in the futureWhen we are in pleasant health, death is unimaginableWe seldom think of itThe days stretch out endlesslySo we go about our little task, hardly aware of our dull attitude towards life

The same attitude, I am afraid, falls on the use of our abilities and sensesOnly the deaf appreciate hearing; only the blind realize the importance of sightBut those who have never lost hearing and sight seldom make the fullest use of these abilitiesTheir ears take in sound hazily, without concentration, and with little appreciationPeople seldom realize how good it is being in good health until they have fallen illIt is the same old story of not being grateful(感激的)without missing

1When reading the thrilling stories, we usually ________

Ahave curiosity about the hero’s limited life

Bshow great interest in our own lives

Cfind many regrets in thinking about the past

Dhave pity on ourselves

2 From the passage, we can learn that ________

Aif we want to live an excellent life we should die tomorrow

Bthe disabled are eager to lose their abilities and senses

Ceach of us should treasure what we have today

Dmost of us are able to make full use of our time

3The underlined word “hazily” in the last paragraph probably means ________

Ahappily              Bunclearly             Cfreely             Dsadly

4The best title for this passage may probably be ________

ANot Being Grateful without Missing         BGiving a Hand to the Disabled

CMaking Use of Our Senses                            DLearning from Thrilling Stories

Jogging has become the most popular individual sport in AmericaMany theories have been put forward to explain the popularity of joggingThe truth is that jogging is a cheap, quick and efficient way to achieve physical fitness

The most useful sort of exercise is exercise that develops the heart, lungs, and circulatory (循环)systemsIf these systems are fit, the body is ready for almost any sport and for almost any sudden demand made by work or emergenciesRunning trains your heart and lungs to deliver oxygen more efficiently to all parts of your bodyIt is worth noticing that this sort of exercise is the only kind that can reduce heart disease, the number one cause of death in America

The only equipment that is needed is a good pair of shoesPhysicians advise beginning joggers not to run in tennis or gym shoesA good running shoe will give the knee and ankle(脚踝)more stability(稳定性).Wearing good shoes will prevent the foot, ankle and knee injures and will also enable the wearer to run on different surfaces

No other special equipment is needed; you can jog in any clothing you want, even in your street clothesMany joggers wear expensive, flashy warm–up suits, but many people just wear a simple T-shirt or jog in last year’s clothesIn cold weather, several layers(层) of clothing are better than one heavy sweater or coatIf joggers are wearing several layers of clothing, they can add or take off layers as conditions change

It takes surprisingly little time to develop the ability to runThe American Jogging Association has a twelve–week program designed to move from a fifteen–minute walk which almost anyone in reasonable health can manage to a thirty-minute runA measure of common sense, a physical examination, and a planned schedule are all it takes

1The main purpose of this passage is to

Adiscuss jogging as a physical fitness program
B
describe the type of clothing needed for jogging

Cprovide scientific evidence of the benefits of jogging

Dpromote some shoes for jogging

2Which of the following is the only special equipment that joggers need?

AGood shoes  B Street clothes    CExpensive suits    D Warm-up trousers

3The most useful kind of exercise is exercise that

Atrains the body for weight lifting
B
enables a person to run ahead with great power

Cis both beneficial and inexpensive

Ddevelops the heart, lungs, and circulatory systems

4We can conclude from this passage that

Abecause of jogging, heart disease is no longer an American problem
B
jogging can be harmful if the runner is not properly prepared
C
warm–up suits are better than T-shirts for jogging
D
jogging is bad for your heart and lungs
