Newspapers have been popular for a long time, but in recent years more and more people prefer to get news from the Internet.

Newspapers and websites are similar in several ways. For example, they both aim at providing information to the public. Besides that, advertising is an important way for both of them to make money.

In spite of the above similarities, there are a few differences. Websites update their news freely. As for newspapers, nothing can be changed once published. So websites offer us the latest news faster than newspapers. Furthermore, newspapers have to be paid for while most websites are free. And it is on the websites that we can express ourselves and exchange ideas with others more easily.

In my opinion, websites and newspaper play their own roles in our lives and they are part of our lives.

Have you ever received a gift that was so clearly not your taste that you wondered if perhaps it had been handed to you by mistakeWorsehave you ever given a present and watched your friend look as though she had opened the wrong box? Maybe she responded with a polite “Why, thank you,” but you knew you had missed the mark. Why do presents sometimes go wrongAnd what do your choicesgood and badreflect about your personal qualities

Choosing the right gift is an artI believe. It calls for empathy---the ability to put yourself into someone else’s head and heart. We’re all able to do thisin factwe’re born with a kind of natural empathy. After the earliest period of childhoodhoweverit needs to be reinforced(加强)by our parents, teachers, friends. When it isn’t, we’re not able to understand other people’s feelings as sharply. This can show in the gifts we select, and so can many other emotional(情感的)qualities.

Think back to the presents you’ve given over the past yearthe time and effort you put into your selection, how much you spentyour thoughts while you were shoppingand your feelings when the receiver opened the package. Keep in mind that what you choose displays your inner world. Of course, you may express yourself differently with different friendsrelativesand other people you know.

We live in a society where exchanging presents is an important part of communication. Ignoring the tradition won’t make it go away. If you really dislike such a traditiontell your friends ahead of time.

1The underlined expression “you had missed the mark" means “you had failed to______”

Amake her feel better                  Bkeep your friendship

Creceive a present in return             Dget the expected effect

2Which of the following is the main idea of the second paragraph

ANatural empathy needs to be reinforced.

BEmotional changes influence one’s choice of gifts.

CSelecting the right gift is an ability people are born with.

DChoosing gifts requires one to understand the receivers.

3In the third paragraphthe author tells us that_______.

Aattention should be paid to the receivers’ responses

Bone learns from what he did in the past

Cthe choice of gifts reflects one’s emotional qualities

Done should spend more time choosing gifts

4The best possible title for this passage is“______”

AWays of Choosing Gifts                 BAn Important Tradition

  CExchanging Presents                     DGift showing feelings

Are you preparing for a big test? If so, you may want to go play some basketball in between hitting the books. Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development. Judy Cameron, a scientist at Oregon Health and Science University, studies brain development. According to her research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels(管), including those in the brain, stronger and more fully developed. Dr. Cameron claims this allows people who exercise to concentrate better. As she says, "While we already know that exercise is good for the heart, exercise can really cause physical changes in the brain."

The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement and physical activity show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active. With babies, even a little movement can show big results. Margaret Barnes, a pediatrician(儿科医生), believes in the importance of exercise. She thinks that many learning disabilities that children have in elementary school or high school can be traced back to(可追溯到) a lack of movement as babies. "Babies need movement that stimulates their five senses(感官). They need to establish a connection between motion(动作)and memory. In this way, as they get older, children will begin to associate(联系) physical activity with higher learning," says Margaret.

Older people can beef up(加强) their brains as well. Columbia University studied a group of seniors ranging in age from(从...排列到) seventy to seventy-nine. Their study showed a short-term memory increase of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week. The exercise does not have to be very difficult, but it does have to increase the heart rate. Also, just like the motion for infants(婴儿), exercise for older people should involve some complexity. Learning some new skills or motions, such as with yoga or tai-chi, helps to open up memory paths in the brain that may not have been used for a long time.

For most people, any type of physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The main goal is to increase the brain's flow of blood. And your brain can benefit from as little as two to three hours of exercise a week.

1What is the main idea of this reading?

AHow to exercise                                  BHow exercise helps the brain

CHow to get good scores on a test          DHow the brain can change

2According to the reading, what is the connection between exercise and brain development?

AExercise makes us stupid                  BThe brain needs special mental exercise.

CThe more exercise, the bigger the brain  DPhysical exercise helps us think better.

3The minimum(最小)amount of exercise required to gain any benefit is.

Athree hours per week                          B40 hours per week

Cthree hours per day                             D40 hours per month

4Why is yoga recommended for seniors?

AIt is easy on joints.                               BIt can be done in groups.

CIt does not increase the heart rate.         DIt includes learning new motions.

Yellowstone National Park is at high altitude(海拔).Most of the park is above 7,500 feet 2,275 meters.

Yellowstone's weather is unpredictable. In summer, it may be warm and sunny with temperatures in the high 70s. At night in any given month, the temperature may drop close to freezing. Fall

Weather can be pleasant, although temperatures average 10--20 degrees lower than summer readings. Nighttime lows can fall into the teens  and lower. Snowstorms increase in frequency as the weeks go by or towards the end of the fall season.

Winter

Temperatures often stay near zero throughout the day, occasionally reaching high in the 20s. Suhzero nighttime lows are common. Annual snowfall averages nearly 150 inches in most of the park. At higher places, 200-- 400 inches of snow have been recorded.
