It is always hard for a small fish to live in a big pondPluto's recent departure(离开)from the classical planet family clearly proves that size really matters

Astronomers voted on August 24 to create the first scientific definition of the word "planet", and Pluto obviously didn't make the cutIt turned out to be only a "dwarf planet(矮行星). After weeks of heated debate, over 2,500 astronomers from 73 countries voted on the definition of a "planet" at a conference of the International Astronomical Union (IAU)According to the definition, a planet must have a clear neighbourhood around its orbit(轨道)Pluto has widely been considered a planet since its discovery in 1930Unfortunately, it has a special orbit which overlaps with Neptune'sIt is all because, compared with Neptune, Pluto is very smallIt is attracted by Neptune's gravity when the two planets get closer

According to IAUa "dwarf planet" should have an orbit around the SunIt will not have a clear neighborhood around its orbit, and must not be a satelliteThe new classification means that the science textbooks will have to be updatedThe solar system is now made up of the eight "classical planets," together with a number of dwarf planetsThe classical planets are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, MarsJupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune

The debate over Plates status started in 1992After an advanced telescope was sent into space, astronomers started to find a belt of objects, which lies beyond NeptuneThe belt contains nearly 1,000 objects, including PlutoAs they continued the exploration, scientists recently discovered at least 41 dwarf planets at the edges of the solar systemThere are at least two objects of a similar size to Pluto.

It seems that even if the IAU had kept Pluto's status as a planet, the classical theory of nine planets in the solar system would have had to be changed, but the other way aroundMore dwarf planets of a similar size to Pluto would join the family of planetsScientists will probably find many more dwarf planets

1.  The main purpose of the text is to ______.

Aprove to the readers that size matters

Btell readers about a big change of the planets

Cexplain the classical theory of planets

Dinform us of science textbooks being updated

2We can infer from the text that______.

Aeight planets make up the solar system.

Bit has been hard for scientists to define a “planet”

CMars is very hot and you can’t go near it

DPluto shares the same orbit with Neptune

3Scientists argued about Pluto’s status for a long time because______.

APluto was first discovered in 1930

Bthe family of planets is too big

   CPluto is located beyond Neptune

Dmany dwarf planets, like Pluto, were found

4The reason for Pluto’s departure is that______.

APluto does not fit the definition of a “planet”

BPluto cannot compete with other planets

CPluto is attracted by Neptune’s gravity

Dother objects of its size have been discovered

5The best title of the text is _____.

   Aan unexpected result                         BEight planets

   CGoodbye Pluto                              DNew Scientific Definition

Prison Break is a huge hit thanks to its handsome star, Wentworth Miller. His character, Michael Scofield, is the engine that drives the show.

Having committed a crime to get into prison and break out with his innocent brother, Michael Scofield is one of the most interesting personalities on TV today. But what about the man behind the character?

Miller, 35, is a hard guy to figure out. He does not come from a normal background and has never lived his life in a typical way.

Miller didn’t take direct path to fame and fortune. He graduated from Princeton University in 1995, not with a degree in theatre of film, but in English. He didn’t even act when he was in college. His only performance experience was in his university’s singing group. Yet , at graduation Miller still decided to make the move to Hollywood.

Miller has always been different. Although he is American, he was in Britain when his father was studying there. His family background is also a special mix of cultures. “My father is black and my mother is white. That means I have always been caught in the middle. I could be either one, which can make you feel out of place,” Miller says.

Following his unusual path, Miller did not start trying out for films and TV shows when he first went to Hollywood. Instead, he worked as a lowly production assistant. Not what you would expect from a Princeton graduate. However, it all paid off for Miller in the end.

In 2002, Miller played a role in the drama Dinotopia(《恐龙帝国》). He starred as a thoughtful and shy man. Producers remembered his performance when they were casting Prison Break two years later. With a golden globe nomination(提名)and another season of Prison Break on his resume, Miller seems ready to take over all of Hollywood.

1The writer thinks “Miller is a hard guy to figure out” because          .

Ait’s difficult to tell him from others

Bhe is a shy man and hard to cooperate with

Che always has ideas hard for people to understand

Dhis family background and life experience are very special

2Which of the following statements is put in the right order?

aMiller did not act in any of the films or TV shows in Hollywood.

dMiller joined in his university’s singing group.

       Adabc         Babcd         Cbacd      Ddcba

3Which is the closest in meaning to the underlined sentence “it all paid off for Miller in the end”?

AMiller put a lot of extra work for his final success.

BMiller gained fame and fortune at last with his first film.

CMiller finally succeeded even if he has been in low position.

DMiller managed to pay off his debts with his small income in the end.

4Which of the following statements is TRUE about Miller?

AHe is chosen to play the Michael Scofield due to his interesting personality.

BHis performance in Dinotopia makes some contributions to his success.

CHe has the same experience with the character Michael Scofield.

DHe is angry about his being born into a mixed-cultural family.

Taking care of unsolved issues of the past will free you to move ahead with confidence. The final step toward putting your past behind so that you can reach for what’s possible is tying up your loose ends. Loose ends are the unsolved relationships that keep you from sleeping worry free at night. You have a loose end if there’s someone you don’t want to run into on a first date or at work. You have a loose end if there’s someone you don’t want to sit next to at a holiday dinner. Loose ends are distracting and have an amazing way of biting you in the bottom at the worst times.

How to Tie up Your Loose Ends

1Identify the five people with whom you have the most unsolved issues. These could be past relationships, employers, business partners, friends, family, or co-workers.

2Contact each of these five loose ends. Invite each separately to the coffee shop or some other non-threatening, non-alcohol environment. Tell each one that you want to apologize for allowing things to get crossways between you. Some may doubt your intentions, but tell them that you sincerely feel it’s time to clear the air. Ask those who agree to meet to write down any ways they think you wronged them, and you do the same. Tell them to bring this list to your get-together.

3Show up on time and thank each for being forgiving enough to meet with you. Be an adult herefinger pointing only tears people apart. Remember, your experience may beand most likely istotally different from his. Listen to each issue each of them raises and try to see it from their perspectives(视角). Don’t interrupt them when they are sharing. Seek to understand why they have bad feelings toward you. Apologize for each thing they think you did to wrong them (even if you don’t completely agree with his view of the situation).

After you tie up your first loose end, you’ll want to solve them all. This is hard to explain until you have done it; but once you do, you’ll know what I mean. I learned so much about myself by tying up my loose ends. Most of all, I think this process helped me become a more understanding and patient friend.

1According to the passage, a “loose end” might be caused by someone ________.

Awho keeps you sleeping soundly            Bwho helps put your past behind

Cwho has different life experiences          Dwho prevents you from going forward

2By telling his own experience in the last paragraph, the author intends to ________.

Alearn more about himself                      Bdescribe his own personality

Cmake his point clearer                          Dtell something hard to explain

3The general tone(语气) of the language in the passage is _________.

       Adisappointing       Bexciting               Ccritical                Dencouraging

4The text is mainly written to tell us __________.

Ahow to free ourselves from unsolved problems

Bhow to stay away from unsettled problems

Cwhen to make an apology to others

Dwhy to forgive others who wronged us
