We all know that money can't buy happinessbut many times we act as if we were happier with a bit more money. We are conditioned to want to be rich(when we know the rich aren't happy either)we are trained to want the latest gadget or style that television tells us to wantwe want to earn more money because then we'll have a good life.

But none of them will bring us happiness. No matter how much we earnno matter how much we have in the bankno matter how nice our clothing or cars or toysnone of them will make us happier. And the sad thing is that it could take us decades to pursue wealth and luxurious items before we realize this.

So what will bring us happinessLuckilyit's these three things that don't cost a thing. These three things have been proven by surveys of hundreds of thousands of people about what they havewhat their lives are likeand how happy they are.

Here they arethe Three Secrets to Happiness

1Good relationships. We have a human need to be close to and to be intimate with other human beings. Having good and supportive friendshipsa strong marriage or close and loving relationships with our family members will make us much more likely to be happy.

Action stepsTake timetodayto spend time with your loved onesto tell them what they mean to youto listen to themand to develop your relationships with them.

2Positive thinking. I'm obviously a big proponent of positive thinking as the best way to achieve your goalsand it turns out that it can lead to happiness too. Optimism and selfesteem are some of the best indicators of people who lead happy lives. Happy people feel empoweredtake control of their livesand have a positive outlook on life.

Action stepsMake positive thinking a habit. In factthis should be one of the first habits you develop. Get into the habit of squashing all negative thoughts and replacing them with positive ones. Instead of “I can't” think “I can”It may sound sillybut it works for meevery time.

3Flow. This is a popular concept on the Internet these days—a state we enter when we are completely focused on the work or task before us. We are so buried in our task that we lose track of time. Having work and leisure that get you in this state of flow will almost undoubtedly lead to happiness.

People find greatest enjoyment not when they're passively mindlessbut when they're absorbed in a mindful challenge.

Action stepsFind work that you have a passion for. Seriously—this is an extremely important step. Find hobbies that you have a passion for. Turn off the TV—this is the opposite of flow—and go outside and do something that truly engages you.

You've been given the Three Secrets to Happiness. Don't waste them!

A sure way to destroy your chances of learning how to write skillfully is to believe that writing is a “natural gift” rather than a learned skill. People with such an attitude think that they are the only ones for whom writing is unbearably difficult. They feel that everyone else finds writing easy or at least tolerable (可容忍的). Such people often say. “I’m not any good at writing” or “English was not one of my good subjects.” They imply that they simply do not have a talent for writing, while others do. The result of this attitude is that these people try to avoid writing, and when they do write, they don’t try their best. Their writing fails chiefly because they believe that they don’t have the “natural talent” needed to write. Unless their attitude changes, they probably will not learn how to write effectively.

A realistic attitude about writing must build on the idea that writing is a skill. It is a skill like driving, typing, or cooking; and, like any skill, it can be learned. If you have the determination to learn, you will develop your writing skills by practicing extensively.

Many people find it difficult to do the active thinking that clear writing demands. It is frustrating (使人沮丧的) to discover how much of a challenge it is to transfer thoughts and feelings from one’s head onto a sheet of paper. But writing is not an automatic process: We will not get something for nothing — and we should not expect to. For almost everyone, skillful writing comes from hard work — from determination and sweat. The good news is that the skill of writing can be mastered, and if you are ready to work, you will learn what you need to know.

28.Why do some people think writing is difficult?

A. They have no time to practice writing.

B. They believe few people can write well.

C. They have no good teachers to help them.

D. They don’t think writing can be learned.

29.It can be inferred from Para. 1 that ______.

A. “natural gift” is the determining factor in one’s success

B. diligence can result in success

C. a person without “natural gift’ is sure to fail in writing

D. attitude determines what one will be

30.What is the topic of the passage?

A. Why writing is important.

B. Whether writing is a born gift.

C. Benefits of essay writing.

D. How to improve writing skills.

Each year there is an increasing number of cars on roads and streets as millions of new cars and trucks are produced. One out of every six Americans works at putting together the parts of cars, driving trucks, building roads of filling cars and trucks with gas.  36.

Most Americans would find it hard to imagine what life would look like without cars.  37..The polluted air becomes poisonous and dangerous to health.

38..  That’s what several of the large car factories have been trying to do. But to build a clean can is easier said than done. Progress in this field has been slow.

Another way is to take the place of the car engine by something else.  39..Many makers believe that it will take years to develop a practical model that pleases man.

To prevent the world from being polluted by cars, we’ll have to make some changes in the way many of us live. Americans, for example, have to cut down on the number of their total cars. They are encouraged to travel and go to work by bicycle. Bicycling is thought to help keep the air clean. But this change does not come easily. A large number of workers may find themselves without jobs if a car factory closes down.  40.

Although cars have led us to a better life, they have also brought us new problems.

A. Thus the problem of air pollution would become less important than that of unemployment.

B. Americans know cars very well.

C. However, some have realized the serious problems of the air pollution that is caused by cars.
