Everyone has got two personalities—the one that is shown to the world and the other that is secret and real. You don’t show your secret personality when you’re awake because you can control your behavior, but when you’re asleep, your sleeping position shows the real you. In a normal night, of course, people frequently change their position. The important position is the one that you go to sleep in.

If you go to sleep on your back, you’re a very open person. You normally trust people and you are easily influenced by fashion or new ideas. You don’t like to upset people, so you never express your real feelings. You’re quite shy and you aren’t very confident.

If you sleep on your stomach, you are a rather secretive (不坦率的) person. You worry a lot and you’re always easily upset. You’re very stubborn (顽固的), but you aren’t very ambitious. You usually live for today not for tomorrow. This means that you enjoy having a good time.

If you sleep curled up (卷曲), you are probably a very nervous person. You have a low opinion of yourself and so you’re often defensive. You’re shy and you don’t normally like meeting people. You prefer to be on your own. You’re easily hurt.

If you sleep on your side, you have usually got a well-balanced personality. You know your strengths and weaknesses. You’re usually careful. You have a confident personality. You sometimes feel anxious, but you don’t often get depressed. You always say what you think even if it annoys people.

1. Which is NOT mentioned in the second paragraph about a person’s personality?

A. He or she is always easily upset.              B. He or she always likes new ideas earlier than others.

C. He or she is always open with others.       D. He or she tends to believe in others.

2. Point out which sentence is used to show the personality of a person who is used to sleeping on his or her stomach?

A. He or she can’t be successful in any business.

B. He or she doesn’t want to stick to his or her opinion.

C. He or she is careful not to offend others.

D. He or she likes to bring others happiness.

3. Which of the following may be the reason for you not to make friends with a person who sleeps curled up?

A. He or she prefers staying at home to going out.

B. He or she is rarely ready to help you.

C. He or she would rather be alone than communicate with you.

D. He or she wouldn’t like to get help from you.

4. It appears that the writer tends to think highly of the person who sleeps on one side because ___________.

A. he or she always shows kindness to people      B. he or she often considers annoying people

C. he or she has more strengths than weaknesses        D. he or she is confident, but not stubborn

5. What’s the writer’s attitude?

A. Supporting.    B. Puzzled.     C. Criticizing (批评的)    D. Objective (客观的).

Ellen Parker was worried about her health. She could not walk very quickly and it was difficult for her to climb stairs. She was soon out of breath.

“I suppose I had better go to the doctor,” she thought.

She went to the doctor and told him her problem.

“I’m not at all surprised,” he said. “It’s clear what your problem is.”

He examined her and then gave her some advice.

“If you don’t do what I say, Mrs. Parker,” he said, “you will have a heart attack. It could kill you.”

The next day she went shopping. The first shop she went into was a butcher’s shop.

“I’d like ten pounds of steak, please,” she said.

“Certainly, madam,” the butcher replied and went into the cold room and found a large piece of steak. He brought the huge piece of meat back into the shop and placed it on the scale(天平).

“That’s just less than ten pounds,” he said.

“That’s big enough,” Mrs. Parker said.

The butcher worked out the price.

“At 4. 99 a pound that will be 49. 50, please. Would you like me to cut it up into smaller pieces for you?”

“Oh, I don’t want to buy the meat,” Mrs. Parker said.

4.

After a busy day of work and play, the body needs to rest. Sleep is necessary for good health. During this time, the body recovers from the activities of the day. The rest that you get while sleeping makes it possible for your body to prepare itself for the next day.

There are four levels of sleep, each being a little deeper than the one before. As you sleep, your body relaxes (放松) little by little. Your heart beats more slowly, and your brain slows down. After you reach the fourth level, your body shifts (变换) back and forth from one level of sleep to the other.

Though your mind slows down, you will dream from time to time. Scientists who study sleep point out that when dreaming occurs, your eyeballs begin to move more quickly (although your eyelids are closed). This stage of sleep is called REM, which stands for rapid eye movement.

If you have trouble falling asleep, some people recommend (建议) breathing very slowly and very deeply. Other people believe that drinking warm milk will make you drowsy. There is also an old suggestion that counting sheep will put you to sleep.

A. dream more often                                   B. feel tired and nervous

C. suffer from poor health                        D. breathe quickly

13. During REM, _____.

A. you move restlessly                    B. your eyeballs move quickly

C. your mind stops working                       D. you start dreaming

14. The underlined word "drowsy" in the last paragraph probably means _____.

A. lazy                    B. relaxed            C. sleepy                    D. pleased

15. A good title for this text might be _____.

A. Dreams          B. Good Health    C. Work and Rest              D. Sleep

I believe that one of the best ways to connect with people and build quality relationships is through making conversation. Although most people can hold a conversation, only a few are smooth when they talk. I have discovered five simple and effective ways to be a smooth talker. Here they are

Talk slowly

Generally, good talkers don’t rush into a conversation. 16____ They act as if they have all the time in the world. This makes them  come off as centered and collected. Model this way of talking and you will create the same effect.

Hold more eye contact

Most people keep eye contact about 2/3 of the time or less when they talk. 17____ This will convey confidence and interest in interacting with them.

18____

People with good conversation skills tend to notice the kind of things that the average person doesn’t notice, and to bring such details into the conversation. They may notice and point out an interesting ring on the other person’s hand, a certain foreign accent, or a certain voice tone they use when saying a name. Thus, such individuals impress people in a very elegant manner.

Express Your emotions

19_____ Express your feelings about those facts. Keep in mind that it is at the emotional level that people connect best.

Use the best words

The ability to talk smoothly has a lot to do with choosing the precise words to convey your precise feelings or thoughts. 20_____ It will help you develop a way with words and allow you to express yourself more easily.

Conversational skills don’t improve just like that. It takes time, practice and the ability to learn at a rapid rate from your own experiences.

ADon’t just present the facts, you’re not a newspaper.

BIt’s a very good idea to hold eye contact just a bit more than that.

CNotice the details.

DIt is important to improve conversational skills.

EOffer interesting news.

FThey take their time when they reflect on something and when they say it out loud.

GDevelop your vocabulary and practice communicating as accurately as possible.
