Born in the State of New York on May 14th, 1984, Mark Zuckerberg was an instant success. In his high school years, he was considered one of top students in the classics, before moving into the arts, sciences, and literature, again picking up high marks and receiving academic praise. It earned him admission to Harvard University.

As a rebellious yet relatively quiet student, he created a website called Facemash in the university– an instantly controversial website that encouraged students to rate each other based on appearance.

The site was controversial for several reasons. The first was its illegal use of photographs, which the university and students took issue with. The second was its controversial nature – not every student liked being ranked based on their appearance. The third was its huge resource use – while it was hosted on Harvard servers, it was the most popular page in the university’s entire network.

Zuckerberg was soon forced to shut the site down, but its popularity and controversy had made him consider its future potential. He soon turned the simple site into a personal one for Harvard students, encouraging them to network with their peers at the college. It was then, together with his two friends, that they launched “The Facebook”, which immediately spread to other colleges and grew into a public service that anyone could access in the United States, whether to network with friends and family, or to play games.

The company has been criticized frequently, nevertheless, Zuckerberg has remained true to his initial vision – to create a website that the entire world can use to communicate openly and easily with one another and to keep the user experience clean and pure. The end result is one of the world’s biggest online businesses.

Although its true value is debatable, it’s safe to say that Facebook, and its creator Mark Zuckerberg, are two of the twenty-first century’s most influential, controversial, and potentially powerful figures.

Owning a pet makes us healthier and happier, but for many of us, long hours at work, tight budgets and small flats means it's just not practical. But there's good news for animal lovers; you can now cosy up with a cup of tea while spending time with furry friends, as the global movement of animal café has reached the UK.
The international phenomenon originated in Taipei, where the world's first cat café, Cat Flower Garden, opened in 1998. Curious tourists soon discovered the pet paradise and brought the concept over to Japan. The first Japanese cat café opened in Osaka in 2005, and now there are said to be nearly 40 in Tokyo alone.
Japan has now gone far beyond the original concept, and some of the trendiest places to visit nowadays have owls, rabbits and goats hanging around. Tokyo's Fukuro no Mise, which means the “Shop of Owls” , has full guest lists for up to two months.
Lady Dinah's Cat Emporium was the first of its kind to open up in East London last year. The successful cat café takes bookings 50 days ahead and usually about 90% of them book out about 5 -6 weeks in advance, Though the business has been a success, the owner Lauren Pears worries a little bit about the sudden rise of cat café everywhere.
“Cat cafés are still in their beginnings here and we've seen a very recent cautionary tale springing up in Singapore with the sudden burst of cat café in the city. Earlier this year, one of them was closed down after serious animal welfare issues resulted in the deaths of several cats. ”She emphasizes that even though the job is fun and rewarding, it also comes with serious responsibility.
8. Why are cat cafés so popular?

A. They offer great services.               B. They provide practical means to enjoy pets.

C. They promote a new concept.         D. They stay open for a long time.

9. What is the concern of Lauren Pears?

A. The sudden rise of illegal cat café.     B. The blind expansion of cat café.

C. Cat café owners' lack of responsibility. D. The possibility that cats may be unfriendly.

10. What does the underlined part "cautionary tale" in the last paragraph refer to?

A. Greeting    B. Interview.      C.Warning.    D. Development.

11. Which country does the text mainly report about?

A . Singapore.  B. China.         C. Japan.      D. UK.

When students and parents are asked to rate subjects according to their importance, the arts are unavoidably at the bottom of the list. Music is nice, people seem to say, but not important. Too often it is viewed as entertainment, but certainly not an education priority(优先). This view is shortsighted. In fact, music education is beneficial and important for all students.

Music tells us who we are, because music is an expression of the beings who create it, it reflects their thinking and values, as well as the social environment it came from. Rock music represents a lifestyle just as surely as does a Schubert song. The jazz influence that George Gershwin and other musicians introduced into their music is obviously American because it came from American musical traditions. Music expresses our character and values. It gives us identity as a society.

Music provides a kind of perception (感知) that cannot be acquired any other way. Science can explain how the sun rises and sets. The arts explore the emotive (情感的) meaning of the same phenomenon. We need every possible way to discover and respond to our world for one simple but powerful reason: No one way can get it all.

The arts are forms of thought as powerful in what they communicate as mathematical and scientific symbols. They are ways we human beings “talk” to each other. They are the language of civilization through which we express our fears, our curiosities, our hungers, our discoveries, our hopes. The arts are ways we give form to our ideas and imagination so that they can be shared with others. When we do not give children access to an important way of expressing themselves such as music, we take away from them the meanings that music expresses.

Science and technology do not tell us what it means to be human. The arts do. Music is an important way we express human suffering, celebration, the meaning and value of peace and love.

So music education is far more necessary than people seem to realize.

12. According to Paragraph 1, students ____ .

   A. prefer the arts to science              B. disagree with their parents on education

   C. view music as an overlooked subject      D. regard music as a way of entertainment

13. In Paragraph 2, the author uses jazz as an example to_________ .

   A. compare it with rock music                   B. prefer the arts to science

   C. introduce American musical traditions       D. show music identifies a society

14. According to the passage, the arts and science__________.

   A. approach the world from different angles         B. explore different phenomena of the world

   C. express people’s feeling in different ways  D. explain what it means to be human

15. What is the main idea of the passage?

   A. Music is an effective communication tool.

   B. Music should be of top education priority.

   C. Music education deserves more attention.

   D. Music education makes students more imaginative.
