2.

In 1939 two brothers, Mac and Dick McDonald, started a drive-in restaurant in San Bernadino, California. They carefully chose a busy corner for their location. They had run their own businesses for years, first a theater, then a barbecue restaurant, then another drive-in. But in their new operation, they offered a new, shortened menu: French fries, hamburgers, and sodas. To this small selection they added one new idea: quick service, no waiters or waitresses, and no tips.

Their hamburgers sold for fifteen cents. Cheese was another four cents. Their French fries and hamburgers had a remarkable uniformity (一致性), for the brothers had developed a strict routine for the preparation of their food, and they insisted on their cooks’ sticking to their routine. Their new drive-in became surprisingly popular, particularly for lunch. People drove up by the hundreds during the busy noontime. The self-service restaurant was so popular that the brothers had allowed ten copies of their restaurant to be opened. They were content with this modest success until they met Ray Kroc.

Kroc was a salesman who met the McDonald brothers in 1954, when he was selling milkshake-mixing machines. He quickly saw the special attraction of the brothers’ fast-food restaurants and bought the right to run other copies of their restaurants. The agreement included the right to copy the menu, the equipment, even their red and white buildings with the golden gate.

Today McDonald’s is really a household name. In 1976, McDonald’s had over $ l billion in total sales. Its first twenty-two years is one of the most surprising success stories in modern American business history.

A. Mac and Dick McDonald never became wealthy for they sold their idea to Kroc.

B. the place the McDonalds chose was the only source of their drive-in

C. forty years ago there were lots of fast-food restaurants

D. Ray Kroc was a good businessman

27. The passage suggests that __________________.

A. creativity is an important element of business success

B. Ray Kroc was the close partner of the McDonald brothers

C. Mac and Dick McDonald became broken after they sold their ideas to Ray Kroc

More than 10 years ago, it was difficult to buy a tasty pineapple. The fruits that made it to the UK were green on the outside and, more often than not, hard with an unpleasant taste within. Then in 1996, the Del Monte Gold pineapple produced in Hawaii first hit our shelves.
The new type of pineapple looked more yellowy-gold than green. It was slightly softer on the outside and had a lot of juice inside. But the most important thing about this new type of pineapple was that it was twice as sweet as the hit-and-miss pineapples we had known. In no time, the Del Monte Gold took the market by storm, rapidly becoming the world's best-selling pineapple variety, and delivering natural levels of sweetness in the mouth, up until then only found in tinned pineapple.
In nutrition it was all good news too. This nice-tasting pineapple contained four times more vitamin C than the old green variety. Nutritionists said that it was not only full of vitamins, but also good against some diseases. People were understandably eager to be able to buy this wonderful fruit. The new type of pineapple was selling fast, and the Del Monte Gold pineapple rapidly became a fixture in the shopping basket of the healthy eater.
Seeing the growing market for its winning pineapple, Del Monte tried to keep the market to itself. But other fruit companies developed similar pineapples. Del Monte turned to law for help, but failed. Those companies argued successfully that Del Monte's attempts to keep the golden pineapple for itself were just a way to knock them out of the market

The meaning of the wordvolunteermay be a little different in different countries, but it usually meansone who offers his or her services. There are many different ways in which people can volunteer, such as taking care of sick people, working in homes for homeless children, and picking up garbage from beaches and parks. Volunteers may work within their own countries or in other countries. They are often people with a strong wish to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. Volunteers dont expect any kind of pay.

Actually, volunteering is the idea that one person may have the ability to offer services that can help other people. Tracy, a good friend of mine, however, recently came back from India with a new idea of what being a volunteer means. She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother Teresas homes in Calcutta. The following is her story. I first heard about Mother Teresa in my high school; we watched a video about her work in India and all over the world. I was so moved by her spirit to help others and her endless love for every human being that after I graduated from high school, I too wanted to try her kind of work. So with two friends I flew to Calcutta for a few weeks. I was asked to work in a home for sick people. I helped wash clothes and sheets, and pass out lunch. I also fed the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried to cheer them up. I felt it was better to share with them than to think that I have helped them. To be honest, I dont think I was helping very much. It was then that I realized that I had not really come to help, but to learn about and experience another culture that helped improve my own understanding of life and the world.

32. According to the text, a volunteer refers to a person who __________________.

A. is willing to help those in need without pay B. can afford to travel to different places

C. has a strong wish to be successful           D. has made a big fortune in life

33. Tracy started her work as a volunteer __________________.

A. after she met Mother Teresa              B. after she finished high school

C. when she was touring Calcutta                D. when she was working in a hospital

34. Why did Tracy choose to be a volunteer?

A. She liked to work with Mother Teresa.

B. She had already had some experience.

C. She was asked by Mother Teresa to do so.

D. She wanted to follow Mother Teresas example.

35. What is Tracys new idea(Paragraph 2) of being a volunteer?

A. Going abroad to help the sick.           B. Working in Mother Teresas home.

C. Doing simple things to help the poor.    D. Improving oneself through helping others.

Meaning of Happiness

“Are you happy?” I asked my brother, Lan, one day,

“YesNoIt depends what you mean,” he said

“Then tell me,” I said, “when was the last time you think you were happy?”

    “April 1967,” he said,

It served me right (我活该) for putting a serious question to someone who has joked his way through lifeBut Lan’s answer reminded me that when we think about happiness, we usually think of something extraordinary, a top of pure delight,     36

37    I remember playing police and robbers in the woods, getting a speaking part in the school playOf course, kids also experience lows, but their delight at such peaks of pleasure as winning a race or getting a new bike is unreserved

In the teenage years, the concept of happiness changes.    38    I can still feel the pain of not being invited to a party that almost everyone else was going toI also remember the great happiness of being invited at another event to dance with a very handsome young man

In adulthood the things that bring great joy — birth, love, marriage — also bring responsibility and the risk of lossLove may not last; loved ones dieFor adults, happiness is complex.

My dictionary defines “happy” as “lucky” or “fortunate”. But I think a better definition of happiness is “the ability to enjoy something”.    39    It's easy to overlook the pleasure we get from loving and being loved, the company of friends, the freedom to live where we please, even good health

While happiness may be more complex for us, the solution is the same as everHappiness isn't about what happens to us; it's the ability to find a positive for every negative, and view a difficulty as a challenge   40

    A. For a child, happiness has a magic quality.

    B. You never know what happiness means to adults

    C. So we chase it and make it equal to wealth and success.

    D. And those peaks seem to get rarer, the older we get.

    E. The more we can enjoy what we have, the happier we are.

    F. It's not wishing for what we don't have, but enjoying what we do possess.

    G. Suddenly it's conditional on such things as tears, love, and popularity.
