My younger brother and I were alone at home.I was doing my homework while my brother was watching TV.Suddenly the doorbell rang. My brother rushed to the door thinking that our parents had come home; he unlocked the door and opened it.
Outside stood a tall man wearing a black raincoat and black boots. He said that he was a salesman and asked politely if our mother or father was at home.Without thinking, my brother said,“No.”He asked if we would like to buy some books.I explained that we were not supposed to buy anything without our parents’ permission. As I was about to close the door,he forced his way into our house, took out a knife and forced me to tie up my brother’s hands with a rope which he took out from his pocket. I tied up his hands but I tied it in a special way so my brother could unite himself. The man then tied my hands up and locked both of us in the kitchen.
Soon he went upstairs to search the bedroom for valuables. I managed to teach my brother to unite the rope on his hands. He then united me. I rushed to the telephone to call the police, but the line was dead. The doors were all locked from the outside. Luckily, the robber forgot to lock the kitchen window. My brother managed to go out of the house through the windows and I told him to go to the neighborhood police post and ask for help.
My brother brought the police to our house and the robber was caught. Soon, our parents came home. My parents were thankful that we were not hurt but they said I should have stopped my brother from opening the door to strangers. I learned a lesson on safety.

Driving in Canada is similar to driving in many parts of the United States. Distances and speeds, however, are posted in kilometers per hour and some signs, particularly in Quebec, may only be in French.
Unless otherwise posted, the maximum (最大限度的) speed limit in Canada is 50km/hr in cities and 80km/hr on highways. On rural highways, the posted speed limit may be 100km/hr. It is not allowed to take automobile radar detectors (汽车雷达检测器) into Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, and the Yukon. Seat belt use is required by law for all passengers, and child car seats must be used by children under 40 pounds. Some provinces require drivers to keep their vehicles’ headlights on during the day and some have banned (禁止) driving while using a hand-held cell phone.
Motorcycles cannot share a lane (车道), and safety helmets for motorcycle riders and passengers are necessary. Running a red light is a serious crime throughout Canada and drivers are advised to stop before starting when a light turns green.
Winter travel can be dangerous due to heavy snowfalls and icy conditions. Some roads and bridges are often closed in winter. Snow tires are required in some provinces. Travelers should also be careful about animals while driving at night in rural areas.
Highway 401, from Detroit to Montreal, is one of the busiest highways in North America. It has been the scene of many traffic accidents due to sudden and severe weather changes, high rates of speed, and heavy truck traffic. Thus drivers should be alert while travelling here.
Please refer to our Road Safety page for more information and tips . Also, we suggest that you visit the website of Canada’s national authority responsible for road safety.

For the Marine Mammal Center (海洋哺乳动物中心),Thursday was an important day: rescued sea lion No.10,000,called Milestone, and 10.001, Zodiac Girl, had been nursed back to health and sent back to the wild where they belong.
Since it opened its doors 36 years ago, the center has become famous for nursing sick marine animals back to health- but its biggest contribution perhaps has been its role in collecting and storing thousands of tissue (生物组织) from the animals it rescues along 600 miles of California coast. The center has published lots of scientific papers and helped develop understanding of effects of disease and the effect of climate (气候) changed on marine animals.
California sea lions share common characteristics with Steller sea lions, which are an endangered species. The center’s researchers say collecting and storing scientific information from many of the thousands of sea lions can help to save Stellers.
“We are learning about marine mammal health through all these patients. Before 1975, there was never anything been regularly recorded in detail, so it wasn’t possible to get animal tissue, ”said Jim Oswald, the center’s spokesman.
Though the sea lions didn’t like to be sent back home in the Pacific Ocean, their time spent at the center provided scientists with the information being used to control and prevent some common diseases.
The two animals had leptospirosis, which could be fatal to them. Dogs and humans can also get the disease. What made the scientists feel strange is that hundred of California sea lions suffered from the disease every four or five years. While no answer to the mystery has been found, the center’s data collection is helping researchers move closer.
32. Thursday was special for the Marine Mammal Center mainly because ______.
A. it got evidence about a new disease
B. it was the date when it was founded 36 years ago
C. it celebrated saving more than ten thousand sea lions
D. it helped Milestone and Zodiac Girl out of trouble
33. The most important role of the Marine Mammal Center lies in ___________.
A. collecting information about marine life
B. nursing sick marine animals back to health
C. publishing scientific papers about animals
D. helping people understand the effect of climate change
34. The underlined word “fatal” in Paragraph 6 means “____”.
A. rare B. funny C. useful D. deadly
35. Which of the following is NOT true according to the text?
A. Sea lions suffer from leptospirosis every four or five years.
B. Both California sea lions and Steller seas are endangered species.
C. California sea lions share a lot in common with Stellers.
D. Dogs and humans may also suffer from leptospirosis.

The power of sleep
While no one knows exactly why you sleep, it’s clear you can’t live without it. Your brain needs sleep to help you pay attention, think of new ideas, and remember what you learn. 36 If you don’t get enough sleep, a school assignment that’s normally easy may feel impossible, or you may feel clumsy playing your favorite sport.
37 Each stage has unique brainwaves that can be measured during a brain test called an EEG(脑电图). Sleep stages repeat throughout the night in 90-minute cycles.
Non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep
Stage 1: Light sleep. In this phase, your body gradually relaxes and brainwave activity starts to slow down. If you wake up now, you may not even know you were asleep at all.
Stage 2: True sleep. In this phase, your breathing and heart beat get slower, but waking up is still easy.
Stage 3: Deep sleep. In this phase, your blood pressure and body temperature drop slightly. 38
Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep
This stage comes after stage three and gets its name from the flickering(来回移动的) eye movements that occur here. 39 An EEG shows a brainwave pattern similar to waking. This is the dreaming stage. It’s also the stage that helps you remember what you learn.
Darkness and dim(昏暗的) lights increase production of a powerful brain chemical (melatonin) that makes you feel tired and sleep through the night. But sunshine and bright lights block melatonin production to help you wake up and stay active all day.
Sleep tip: 40 A dim nightlight is fine, but even the light from digital screens can make it hard to fall asleep.
A. Your breathing and heart beat speed up.
B. Different people have different sleep cycles.
C. Sleep has different stages.
D. Your body needs sleep to grow, fix injuries, and fight sickness.
E. Very slow brainwaves take over and it’s hard to wake up.
F. When you go to bed, keep your room dark.
G. If you can, turn on bright lights and open the window.
