It was a terribly rainy wet winter day. While I was walking from the library after getting my University applications (申请) for next year at the end of my lunch break, a man was walking towards me with two huge boxes of brochures (小册子)
I thought, "What on earth is that man trying to do? Carry all those things?" Then all of a sudden he dropped them all! It was a terrible mess with hundreds of brochures all over the  path in front of me! "Oh, no," I thought. The man sat down and started trying to pick all of the brochures up. I couldn't believe how many people walked on by without even caring at all.
I thought, "I'm not going to be one of those people who don't care about this man. I'm going to help him. "So, even though it was the end of my lunch break from work and I would  be late if I stopped to help him, I didn't mind. If I explained what happened, I was sure my boss wouldn't mind too much. So, I helped him pick them all up. Then I asked if he would like a hand in carrying a box to where he went. He said yes gratefully.
I carried one of the heavy boxes. The box I had to carry was very heavy-as I'm quite a petite (
娇小的) girl-but I didn't complain. I just helped him with a big smile across my face. We got there and he thanked me very much for helping him out. He also gave me one of these lovely brochures about all the walks in and around the Bay of Plenty.
What is a better way to spend my lunchtime than helping someone? Luckily, I wasn't that late back to work, so nobody minded at all!

22. The author thought that she would ________ if she helped the man with the brochures.

A. miss her lunch                      B. get a rise

Su Hua is studying at Cambridge, UK. She has bought a bicycle and is worried about security (安全). Her friend, Kate, found this article and sent it to her.

 Introduction

A lot of crime is against bicycles. About 150,000 bicycles are stolen every year and most are never found. You can prevent this happening by following a few careful steps.

Basic Security

Do not leave your bicycle in out-of-the-way places. Always lock (锁上)your bicycle when you leave. Secure it to lampposts or trees. Take off smaller parts and take them with you, for example lights and saddles (车座).

Locks

Get a good lock. There are many different types in the shops. Buy one that has been tested against attack. Ask for a recommendation from a bike shop.

Marking

Security marking your bike can act as a deterrent to a thief. It can also help the police find your bicycle. It should be clearly written and include your postcode and your house or flat number. This will provide a simple way to identify your bicycle.

Registration

There are a number of companies who will mark your bicycle for you. They will then put your registration number and personal details on their computer database. Then if your bicycle is found it will be easy to contact you

Finally keep a record of the bicycle yourself: its make, model and registration number. You can even take a photograph of it. This will prove the bicycle belongs to you.

How would you like an easy way to earn $2,500? All you have to do is to sit around and wait for your meals. There’s a catch, however. You have to stay in a chicken cage with a stranger for a whole week. There are no books or television or radio for a whole week. There are no books or television or radio for amusement. You can’t leave until the week is up. And a camera will be recording your every move.

Two people actually took the job. The idea came from Rob Thompson, a video artist. He wanted to make a film about the way animals are treated. His goal was to raise people’s awareness (认识) of the living conditions of animals that are raised for food. He decided to pay $5,000 out of his own savings to two people who were willing to live like chickens for a week.

To Rob’s surprise, quite a few people answered his advertisement. He had interviews and selected Eric, a 24-year-old restaurant worker, and Pam, a 27-year-old chemist. The plan was for them to spend seven days together in a chicken cage that was six feet long and three feet wide. A camera would record their experience, which would take place in an art museum.

The week was long and difficult. They slept on a hard wooden floor. They couldn’t stand up without banging their heads. They ate mash(a kind of food for animals) and drink water from a garden pipe. Their only privacy (隐私) was a toilet surrounded by a curtain. There were no sinks, mirrors, or toothbrushes in the cage. Visitors who came here were warned, “Do not feed the humans.”

Finally it was over, and Pam and Eric came out of the cage. They had survived the week, and they each had a $2,500 check in their hands. When Rob Thompson opened the cage, Eric came out, changed into clean clothes, and ate a chocolate bar right away. “It’s great for me to be able to stand up.” he said. Pam just changed her clothes and left. After a week of visitors and reporters watching her, she didn’t want to talk to anyone.

College students constantly hear the praises of education. We have all become used to believing that a college education is always a guarantee (保证) of an easier life. I was nine years old when my fourth-grade teacher presented me with a task, to write down all of the things I wanted in my life. I filled my paper with things like: own a big house and have servants; be rich and have a good job. The next day my teacher handed back my paper and in red ink she wrote: “GO TO COLLEGE.” For a long time, I was completely sure that once I got an education, BAM! Life would be easier.

However, education cannot promise all wishes, dreams, and desires (strong wishes). Society must refuse to accept the foolish idea that a college education's main purpose is to satisfy our desires and secure success. Like most challenging things, education is a gamble(赌博)in which results depend entirely on people’s ability to look past their wants to see the realism and reason behind their wants.

For instance, my first year of college, I took a sociology class. In class, we were taught that Third World countries were poor. We learned that our quality of life would be almost impossible for an average person in those countries. I began to examine my own desire to be rich. To always go after money felt selfish when knowing others had none at all. Learning about other society's financial situations forced me to look beyond what I wanted.

Through the process (过程) of education, everything once desired is tested. Wanting something is no longer enough; it’s more important to examine why we want it and whether we really want it. When my desire for money changed, everything changed. I stopped longing for money-driven careers and stopped valuing the people who had them. I began to examine the things I purchased and my reason for wanting them.

Education is a tool to be used to develop and advance our desires, so we can discover the things that are truly significant in life. Education is a source to expand our society to see beyond the superficial(表面的)attraction and the “quick fixes”, leaving the belief of an effortless life behind in order to desire a meaningful one.

32. The author’s fourth-grade teacher probably agreed that ______.

A. the author was an ambitious student

B. the author should set more realistic goals

C. a college student would lead an easier life

D. a college degree was the key to the author's dreams

33. Why does the author mention her sociology class?

A. To share her learning experiences with readers.

B. To support her new understanding about education.

C. To express her feeling of being sorry for people in Third World.

D. To stress the importance of taking a sociology course.

34. With a college education, the author ______.

A. disliked rich people            B. lost interest in career

C. desired more material things       D. stopped always looking for more wealth

35. What’s the main idea of the passage?

A. College education promises an effortless life.

B. College education tests and guides our life desires.

C. College education offers solutions to social problems.

D. College education turns young people into gamblers.

Memory, they say, is a matter of practice and exercise.   16   But even if you are successful, there are times when your memory seems to play tricks on you.

17   One morning last week, for example, I got up and found that I had left the front door unlocked all night, yet I clearly remember locking it carefully the night before.

18   Once in a while you remember not doing something, and then find out that you did. One day last month, for example, I was sitting in a barber(理发师)shop waiting for my turn to get a haircut, and suddenly I realized that I had got a haircut two days before at the barber shop across the street from my office.

We always seem to find something funny and amusing(有趣的)in incidents caused by people’s forgetfulness or absent-mindedness.   19   Unfortunately, however, absent-mindedness is not always funny.   20

  A. Stories about absent-minded professors have been told for years, and we never got tired of

     hearing new ones.

  B. Memory “trick” work the other way as well.

  C. If you have the wish and really made a conscious(自觉的)effort, then you can quite easily

improve your ability to remember things.

  D. Generally forgetting things is serious and dangerous.

  E. It is necessary to remember the way to protect yourself from memory “tricks”.

  F. There are times when “trick” of our memory can cause us great trouble.

  G. Sometimes you remember things that really did not happen.
