There was a story many years ago of a school teacher—Mrs. Thompson. She told the children on the first day that she loved them all the same. But that was a lie. There in the front row was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. He didn’t play well with the other children and he always needed a bath. She did not like him.
Then Mrs. Thompson got to know that Teddy was actually a very good boy before the death of his mother. Mrs. Thompson was ashamed of herself. She felt even worse when, like all her other students, Teddy brought her a Christmas present too. It was his mother’s perfume(

Teddy said,“Mrs. Thompson, today you smell just like my Mom used to.”After the children left she cried for at least an hour. On that very day, she stopped teaching reading, writing and math. Instead, she began to teach children.

Six years went by before she got a note from Teddy. He wrote that he had finished high school, third in his class, and she was still the best teacher he ever had in his whole life. He went to college. Mrs. Thompson got two more letters from him with the last one signed. The Odore F.Stoddard,M.D. (
医学博士).
The story doesn’t end there. On his wedding day, Dr. Stoddard whispered in Mrs. Thompson’s ear,“Thank you, Mrs. Thompson, for believing in me. You made me feel important and showed me that I could make a difference.”

A new study shows students who write notes by hand during lectures perform better in exams than those who use laptops(笔记本电脑).

Students are increasingly using laptops for note-taking because of speed and legibility(清晰度).But the research has found laptop users are less able to remember and use what they have been taught.

Researchers did experiments to find out whether using a laptop increased the tendency(倾向) to make notes "mindlessly" by taking down word for word what the professors said

In the first experiment, students were given either a laptop or pen and paper .They listened to the same lectures and were told to use their usual note-taking skills. Thirty minutes after the talk , they were examined on their ability to remember facts and on how well they understood concepts(概念).

The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many notes as those who wrote by hand. However, they performed(表现) worse at remembering and using the concepts. Both groups scored similarly when it came to memorizing facts.

The researchers' report said, "While more notes are useful, if the notes are taken mindlessly, as is more likely the case on a laptop, you can’ t find the advantages."

In another experiment aimed at testing long-term(长期的) memory, students took notes as before but were tested a week after the lecture. This time, the students who wrote notes by hand performed better on the exam.

These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate learning and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the future.

32. More and more students prefer laptops for note-taking because they can        .

    A. write more notes                B. understand concepts better

    C. get higher scores               D. understand lectures better

33. While taking notes, laptop users tend(倾向于)to be      .

    A. skillful                       B. mindless

    C. thoughtful                     D. tireless

34. The author of the passage aims to        .

A. examine the importance of long-term memory

B. explain the advantage of taking notes by hand

C. explain the how to take notes

D. ask people to use laptops

35. The passage is probably from_____.       .
