Elizabeth Blackwell was born in England in 1821, and moved to New York City when she was ten years old. One day she decided that she wanted to become a doctor. That was nearly impossible for a woman in the middle of the nineteenth century. After writing many letters asking for admission(录取)to medical schools, she was finally accepted by a doctor in Philadelphia. She was so determined that she taught school and gave music lessons to get money for the cost of schooling.

In 1849, after graduation from medical school, she decided to further her education in Paris. She wanted to be a surgeon(外科医师) , but a serious eye problem forced her to give up the idea.

Upon returning to the United States, she found it difficult to start her own practice because she was a woman. By 1857 Elizabeth and her sister, also a doctor, along with another woman doctor, managed to open a new hospital, the first for women and children. Today most Chinese teenagers are happy to be favored by two parents and four grandparents in their families. But have you ever thought about how to take care of four to twelve old people when you grow up and get married? This could be a problem for most Chinese youths as China is entering a new stage of an aging society.

An aging society refers to one where 10 percent or more of its population is over 60. By the end of 2007, Chinese over 60 years old have made up 11.7 percent of the nation’s total population. “China is getting old before becoming rich,” said Cai Chuang, a professor at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The population increase that has powered Chinese growth for three decades will give way over the next ten years to a rapid aging of the society. This will lead to weaker economic growth, because of a lack of labor resources.

As a result of the family planning policy, it is expected that the country's total working population will decrease after 2015.

China is not the only country getting old. More than 60 countries have become aging societies and one in three people in the European Union is a senior citizen.

However, experts said that China doesn't have a highly developed social security network to support the old. Social security is an insurance program protecting those in need, including the old, the disabled and others.

25. An aging society is a society that ___________.

 A. less than 10% of its population is over 60

 B. 10% or more of its population is over 60

 C. there are four old people in a family

  D. most of its population is over 60

26. If China enters an aging society, ___________.

 A. there will not be enough labor resources

 B. the family planning policy will be ended

 C. everyone needs to take care of four to twelve old people

 D. China will have a highly developed social security network

27. The passage mainly talks about ___________.

A. an aging society

B. Chinese social problems

C. family planning policy                    D. aging problem in China

Everyone needs friends. We all like to feel close to someone. It is nice to have a friend to talk, laugh and do things with. Surely, there are times when we need to be alone. We don't always want people around. But we would feel lonely if we never had a friend.

No two people are the same. Sometimes friends don't get along well, which doesn't mean that they no longer like each other. Most of the time they will go on being friends. Sometimes friends move away, then we feel very sad. We miss them much, but we can call them and write to them. Maybe we would never see them again, and we can make new friends. It is surprising to find out how much we like new people when we get to know them. Families sometimes name (...命名)their children after a close friend. Many places are named after men and women, if they are friendly to people in a town. Some libraries are named this way. So are some schools. We think of these people when we go to these places.

There's more good news for people, if they have friends. These people live longer than those people if those don't have friends. Why? It could be that they are happier. Being happy helps you stay well. Or it could be just knowing that someone cares, if someone cares about you, you take better care of yourself.

32. The first paragraph tells us ________.

A. none needs friends                     B. we always need friends around us

C. making friends is the need in people's life   D. we need to be alone

33. Which of the following is the most probable place people name after friendly people?

A. A house.      B. A room.       C. A library.      D. A village.

34. If people have friends, they would live longer, because ________.

A. they feel happier and healthier       B. they get a lot of help from their friends

C. they take better care of themselves    D. both A and C

35. This passage tells us ________.

A. that people are all friends           B. that people need friends

C. how to get to know friends          D. how to name a place

What is your favorite color? Do you like yellow, orange, red?   36   Do you prefer grey and blue? Then you are probably quiet, shy, and you would rather follow than lead. You tend to be pessimist. At least, this is what psychologists tell us, and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the meaning of color preference, as well as the effect that colors have on human beings.   37   If you happen to love brown, you did so, as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as soon as you could see clearly.

38   A yellow room makes most people feel more cheerful and more relaxed than a dark green one; and a red dress brings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day.   39   A black bridge over the Thames River, near London, used to be the scene of more suicides(自杀) than any other bridge in the area—until it was repainted green. The number of suicide attempts immediately fell sharply. Perhaps it would have fallen even more if the bridge had been done in pink or baby blue.

40   It is an established fact that factory workers work better, harder, and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black or grey.

A. On the other hand, black is depressing.

B. They tell us, among other facts, that we do not choose our favorite color as we grow up —

we are born with our preference.

C. The rooms are painted in different colors as you like.

D. If you do, you must be an optimist, a leader, an active person who enjoys life, people and

   excitement.

E. Light and bright colors make people not only happier but more active.

F. Life is like a picture or a poem, full of different colors.

G. Colors do influence our moods—there is no doubt about it
