As you grow rapidly through your teenage years, you will experience a lot of changes. The changes may seem difficult and they may seem to happen quickly. Don't panic! You will deal successfully with them! You are a young adult now!

With more responsibility, you will find more freedom to make your own choices. This is a time to be well informed about your choices so that you can make healthy balanced decisions that will help shape your future. You may already know your career path or you may have no idea at all what you want to do. Both situations are fine! Work hard and the right opportunity will present itself to you.

Young adulthood means greater freedom and more choices. You will probably want to be independent. But try not to shut your family out of your life. You should learn to think of others even though you are old enough to look after yourself. Your family have been with you since you came into this world.

This period is part of the life cycle. There are some_people who will be with you throughout life's journey and there will be some people with whom you part and go separate ways. Leaving school can be hard. The reality is that you may not ever see all of your classmates again.

You can never be too sure these days in the United States of your neighbors or even your customers! Try to keep a low profile (姿态) in your neighborhood: Don't announce to everyone that you are running a home business with thousands of dollars worth of equipment. As much as possible, do not invite clients (客户) or visitors to your home. In fact, I know of some homebased entrepreneurs (企业家) who would rather meet their clients in a neutral ground, eg. the client's office or even Starbucks.

There are other ways to keep burglars away from your house.

Keep lights on around your house in the evenings. Light is a natural fright for burglars.

Invest in a security alarm, particularly if your house is located at a remote spot. Security systems can often bring down the cost of your homeowner's premium (保险费)

Make sure that all windows and doors are locked and the security alarm turned on before you sleep at night or go out of the house. Avoid keeping house keys in obvious places, such as under the lamp or on top of the doorframe.

Adding an additional lock will provide extra security when you are home. The deadlock, sometimes called an “exit only deadbolt” is a deadbolt that does not have an external (外部的) key. It is clearly visible on the door from the outside, but cannot be broken into without destroying the door, frame or lock itself. While this security won't help directly when you aren't home,  the visibility may discourage an intruder from trying the door.

Your door itself should be made of strong materials, such as oneinch thick solid hardwood or heavy metal.

25The advice given by the writer in the passage focuses on ________.

Ahow to make your house safe from burglars

Bwhat to do when your house is broken into

Chow to improve social security in the United States

Dhow to run a home business

26Some homebased entrepreneurs do not invite clients to their home ________.

Ato enjoy convenience outside their home

Bfor the safety of their property

Cnot to let others know about their business

Din order to avoid being seen by burglars

27All the following are part of the writer's advice except that the homeowner ________.

Abuy a security alarm and turn it on in the evening

Bfix an extra lock on the door from inside

Chave the doors made of solid hardwood or heavy metal

Dkeep lights on in all rooms to threaten burglars

28What does the underlined word “intruder” most probably mean in the passage?

ASomeone who is invited for a visit.

BSomeone who illegally enters the home.

CSomeone who pays regular visits to the home.

DSomeone who tries to destroy the lock.

Some people are pessimistic (悲观的) when they think about the future. They say that, a hundred years from now, we will have used most of the earth's resources. We will have polluted our seas badly, and be unable to eat fish from them. We will have made the air so dirty that we will need to wear masks. The world's population will have doubled, and we will have used all the countryside for housing; there will be no farmland left.

Other people believe that Man adapts very easily. They have a different idea of the future. How, in their views, will people be living in a hundred years' time?

One architect believes that Man will move off the land. He suggests that the city of the future will be a huge, pyramidshaped building, which will be floating on the surface of the sea. About 5,000 families will be living there, and the building will contain shops and schools as well as homes. By living on the sea, we will give the farmers more land to grow crops.

As for oil, people will no longer need it: we will be heating our homes with power from the sun. And we will not be short of minerals, because there are plenty under our oceans. At the moment, we do not have the technology to get them out. But, in a hundred years' time, the optimists say, the new sea cities will be using these resources.

What will be in the shops in the year 3000? What will people be wearing? How will people be traveling?

Scientists who make predictions about the future suggest that, by the year 3000, shops will no longer exist. Computers will have replaces them; and people will order goods from home.

People will be wearing very light, thin clothes. By this time, scientists will have invented a fabric that keeps us cool in hot weather and warm in cold weather.

As for travel, the experts say that most people will be using public transport. Electric cars will be traveling through the streets day and night. Anybody will be able to stop one and use it.

An interesting picture. Unfortunately, we will not be there to see if these predictions come true.

29Pessimists believe that in the future ________.

Athe seas and oceans will be full of houses

Bwe'll have used up all the resources

Cwe will not have enough fish to eat from the seas

Dwe will have polluted the air so badly that it will be impossible for us to breathe

30Optimists suggest that ________.

Aall the land will be too polluted to be cropped on

Bpyramids will be the most commonlyused houses

Cpeople will be using the power from the sun instead of oil

Dwe will be short of materials even though we get them from under the oceans

31Scientists have made the predictions EXCEPT  ________.

Aelectric cars will be going along the streets continuously

Bthe resources under the oceans will never be used up

Cpeople will order from home

Dpeople won't suffer from cold any longer

Today is National BiketoWork Day. And on New York City's jammed streets, people are cycling on hundreds of miles of new bike lanes. But New York's widespread efforts to make streets safer for bikes have also left some locals complaining about the loss of parking spots and lanes for cars.

When the weather is good, Aaron Naparstek likes to pedal (用踏板踩) his two young kids to school on a special Dutchmade bicycle. Naparstek supports the new lane.

Aaron: The bike lane on Prospect Park West is really introducing a lot of new people to the idea that it's possible to use a bike in New York City for transportation or to travel around. This is what 21st century New York City looks like.

Prospect Park West is still a oneway road, but where it used to have three lanes of car traffic, now it has two, plus a protected bike lane. Supporters say that makes the road safer for everyone, including pedestrians, by slowing down cars and taking bikes off the sidewalk. But some longtime residents disagree. Lois Carswell is president of a group called Seniors for Safety. She says the twoway bike lane is dangerous to older residents who are used to oneway traffic.

Lois: We wanted a lane—the right kind of lane that would keep everybody safe, that would keep the bikers safe. But we want it to be done the right way. And it has not been done the right way.

Craig Palmer builds bars and restaurants in Manhattan. I was interviewing him for a different story when he brought up the bike lanes all on his own.

Craig: I think the biggest problem is that Bloomberg put all these bike lanes in. You took what used to be a full street and you're shrinking it.

Then there are the Hasidic Jews in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, who forced the city to remove a bike lane through their neighborhood. But polls show that the majority of New Yorkers support bike lanes by a margin of 56% to 39%. Bicycle advocate Caroline Samponaro of Transportation Alternatives calls that a_mandate.

Caroline: If this was an election, we would have already had our victory. The public has spoken and they keep speaking. And I think, more importantly, the public is starting to vote with their pedals.

32What does Aaron mean by saying “This is what 21st century New York City looks like.”

AThere are hundreds of miles of new bike lanes in 21st century New York City.

BDrivers slow down their cars and bikes are taken off the sidewalk in New York.

CBikes are used as a means of transport in 21st century New York City.

DIt's possible to make the streets safe for pedestrians in New York.

33According to the passage, which of the following cannot support the opponents of these new bike lanes?

ADrivers lose parking spots and lanes for cars.

BThe twoway bike lane is dangerous to older residents.

CWe took what used to be a full street so the road is broader than before.

DThe removal of one bike lane through a neighbourhood in Brooklyn was not supported by the majority of New Yorkers.

34“A mandate” in Paragraph 8 was referred to a demand or command from ________.

Athe authority                                             Bthe public

Cthe supporters                                           Dthe government

35What of the following might be the best title of the passage?

ARide on National BiketoWork Day

BA New Bike Lane Appears in New York

CA Bike Lane Divides New Yorkers

DWho Wins an Election
