Samuel looked at his sister, Emily, and said, “I wouldn’t have thought Everett would be a thief.” Emily replied, “Whoa, we don’t know that for sure.” Samuel said, “But who else could it be? He was there, he had them in his hands, and now they are missing.”

Samuel remembered two days ago when he had brought out his coin collection for Everett to see. At the end of that day, Samuel’s mother asked him to take a note to Mr. Bates down the street, so he asked his friend, “Is it okay if I leave you for a few minutes?” Everett had said, “Go ahead. I’ll clean up here,” pointing at the piles of coins on the floor. When Samuel had returned, he had done his homework, had eaten dinner, and had read for a while before bed. It was not until two days later that he realized the quarters were gone.

Emily said, “Why don’t you just ask him?” “Ask him what? Hey, Best Friend, did you steal my coin collection?” Samuel thought for a moment, deciding if that would be a good idea. The theft of his collection left him with a feeling of betrayal (背叛). “How could I have misjudged my friend?”

The next day Samuel went over to Everett’s house. Everett was acting funny. In fact, Samuel thought Everett was acting like someone with a secret. Suddenly, Everett cried, “I can’t stand it anymore!” and pulled something from underneath the chair. “Go on — open it! I was going to wait until your birthday tomorrow, but I can’t wait!”

Slowly, Samuel lifted the top of the box. Laid out in front of him were all of the quarters from his coin collection. Each quarter was in its own place in a new collection case. Each quarter shone like it was new.

Samuel felt heat rush over his neck and ears. He weakly said, “Thank you — this means ... a great deal to me.” He was thankful that Everett had cut him off before he said something bad. Everett was exactly the type of person he wanted as a friend!

24. From Paragraph 1-3, we know that ________.

25. The word “misjudged” in Paragraph 3 means ________.

A. agreed with                             B. been wrong about

C. cared about                                   D. been troubled by

A. He makes quick decisions.                 B. He is not an honest boy.

C. He enjoys surprising his friends.           D. He is helpful.

A. trust is an important part of friendship

Around 2 million schoolchildren in schools right across the country are taking part in one of the most important dates, as Monday 21 May saw the start of Walk to School week.

The national event was held at a school in Lambeth. Lots of people gathered around a very big globe, the size of which shows the volume(体积)of carbon dioxide produced by a school bus every week. Similar events were held at schools throughout the country, making sure the message gets out all over Britain.

And it is not just about the climate-change-causing carbon dioxide. As for local air pollution, the school bus is one of the worst offenders. It’s those short, stop-start journeys which are the most polluting — giving out carbon dioxide and other compounds(化合物)that are linked to worsening air quality.

Contrary to what some might believe, staying in a car offers no protection from local pollution — in fact pollution found inside the car is about three times higher than that experienced by walkers. The organizers ask people to leave those keys by the door and walk to school — and judging by the number of schools involved(参与)this year it’s the schoolchildren that will be leading the way.

Andrew Fielding, one of Walk to School organizers, said, “We’re encouraging people around the country to use Walk to School week to try out walking with their kids. Walking to school isn’t just great for the environment, it’s great for you too — walking for those 30 minutes a day means real quality time together, and the average walk there and back will burn more calories(卡路里)than those burnt in the school’s PE. Give it a go and see how you find it, and we doubt if you’ll want to go back to the traffic jams afterwards!”

28. The Walk to School week mainly aims to ________.

A. let people take enough exercise to build up their body

B. make people realize walking to school helps cut pollution

C. encourage people around the country to try out walking with their kids

D. make sure that parents have real quality time together with their children

29. People at a school in Lambeth gathered around a very big globe because ________.

A. the globe stood for the earth which had been greatly polluted

B. the globe could send the message about the national event all over Britain

C. they had to get rid of the large amount of carbon dioxide which was kept in the globe

D. the globe made people learn about the amount of carbon dioxide produced by a school bus

30. Who will be the leading part of this year’s Walk to School week event?

  A. The organizers.    B. The parents.     C. The schoolchildren   D. The teachers.

31. From the last paragraph, we can infer that ________.

A. people would rather go back to the traffic jams

B. more and more people will enjoy walking to school

C. the school’s PE may be replaced during Walk to School week

D. many parents are using Walk to School week to walk with their kids

If you spent years training to be a lawyer and had a great steady income, would you leave it to undertake a harebrained(轻率的) plan that only your mum and girlfriend believed in? That’s exactly what Tom Pakenham did.

He had the idea of starting an eco-friendly taxi company and so with five environmentally friendly cars Green Tomato Cars was born. Now, only a few years later, the company has a group of 60 Toyota Prius Hybrids.

When the company started in 2006 Tom says, “ Only my mum, girlfriend Sophie, now my wife, and Jonny ( his business partner ) were 100 percent behind the idea of starting London’s first cab service. ”

Tom, who sold his150,000 flat to raise money for the business, received the support of some well-known persons, Buckingham Palace officials and BSkyB managersEven Al Gore is a fan.

Currently carrying 500-600 passengers a day, Green Tomato Cars is a shining example that commercial(商业的)success and green issues are compatible.

“All our drivers and employees are employed from the local community. We use local garages, service agents and vehicle sign-writers even though that is not always the most competitive choice. The reason is that to bring green products to the fore we believe we must not be worse than conventional(传统的)taxis. The target is to be recognized as No.1 provider of environmental goods and services in London and around the world.”

All their hard work has paid off as The Department for Transport has acknowledged Green Tomato Cars progress by giving them the Fleet Hero Award and last year the company was highlighted at the WTM World Responsible Tourism Day.

The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we’ve never been before.

But just as in face to face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when on line.   36   Imagine how you’d feel if you were in the other person’s shoes.

For anything you’re about to send: ask yourself, “Would I say this to the person’s face? If the answer is no, rewrite and reread.   37

If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct (本能 ) is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so.   38   If it was caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect opinions of others in the chat room.

39   Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it’s a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If it is a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Having good manners yourself doesn’t give you license to correct everyone else.   40   At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those you have offended.

A. Everyone was new to the network once.

B. If you do decide to tell someone about a mistake, point it out politely.

C. It’s unusual that there are some people who speak rudely or make mistakes online.[Z-X-X-K]

D. The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated.

E. You should either ignore the person, or use your chat software to block their messages.

F. When you send short messages to a person online, you must say something beautiful to hear.

G. Repeat the process till you feel sure that you’d feel comfortable saying the words to the person’s face.
