Last week my youngest son and I visited my father at his new home in Tucson, Arizona. He moved there a few years ago, and I was eager to see his new place and meet his friends.

My earliest memories of my father are a tall, handsome, successful man devoted to his work and his family, but uncomfortable with his children. As a child I loved him. He seemed unhappy with me unless I got straight A’s and unhappy with my boyfriends if their fathers were not as “successful” as he was. Whenever I went out with him on weekends, I used to struggle to think up things to say, feeling on guard.

On the first day of my visit, we went out with one of my father’s friends for lunch at an outdoor café. We talked along that afternoon, did some shopping, ate on the street table, and laughed over my son’s funny facial expressions. Gone was my father’s critical (挑剔的) air and strict rules. Who was this person I knew as my father, who seemed so friendly and interesting to be around? What had held him back before?

The next day dad pulled out his childhood pictures and told me quite a few stories about his own childhood. Although our times together became easier over the years, I never felt closer to him at that moment. After so many years, I’m at last seeing another side of my father. And in so doing, I’m delighted with my new friend. My dad, in his new home in Arizona, is back to me from where he was.

It happened to me recently. I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obama's Dreams From My Father and how it had changed my views of our President. A friend I was talking to agreed with me that it wasin his words,“a brilliantly(精彩地)written book”.Howeverhe then went on to talk about Mr Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his background at all. I sensed that I was talking to a book liar(说谎的人).

And it seems that my friend is not the only one. Approximately two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven't. In the World Book Day's Report on Guilty Secrets”,Dreams From My Father is at number 9.The report lists ten booksand various authorswhich people have lied about readingand as I'm not one to lie too often (I'd hate to be caught out)I'll admit here and now that I haven't read the entire top ten. But I am pleased to say thatunlike 42 percent of peopleI have read the book at number oneGeorge Orwell's 1984.I think it's really brilliant.

The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it. It says that many people lie about having read Jane AustenCharles DickensFyodor Dostoevsky(I haven't read himbut haven't lied about it either )and Herman Melville.

Asked why they liedthe most common reason was toimpresssomeone they were speaking to. This could be tricky if the conversation became more indepth!

But when asked which authors they actually enjoypeople named JK. RowlingJohn GrishamSophie Kinsella(ahthe big sellersin other words)Fortytwo percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back o f the book to read the end before finishing the story(I'll come cleanI do this and am astonished that 58 percent said they had never done so)

32How did the author find his friend a book liar?

ABy judging his manner of speaking.     BBy looking into his background.

CBy mentioning a famous name.        DBy discussing the book itself.

33Which of the following is a guilty secret according to the World Book Day report?

ACharles Dickens is very low on the topten list.

B42% of people pretended to have read 1984.

CThe author admitted having read 9 books.

DDreams From My Father is hardly read.

34By lying about readinga person hopes to ________

Acontrol the conversation     Bappear knowledgeable

Clearn about the book        Dmake more friends

35What is the author's attitude to 58% of readers?

AFavorable.     BUncaring.    CDoubtful.   DFriendly.

How Can I Fight Laziness?

Lazy people will never gain anything in life. However, laziness can be defeated once a few changes have been made in your mind.

36._______ Many people lack sleep constantly, since they stay up too late and get up too early to prepare for work. These people have little motivation once they arrive home. Laziness works hand in hand with a lack of motivation and a tendency to put off things. By adjusting your sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day.

Another way to fight laziness is to change your mind from passive to active. Some people treat their lives as if they were pushed from task to task. Others take a more positive approach, viewing each task as a challenge they must overcome alone. 37._______

Some people fight laziness by removing the temptations(诱惑)that surround them. A television in the living room may provide entertainment, but watching too much TV often contributes to laziness. Create a reward system for yourself, just as parents do for a child to promote responsibility.38.______

Laziness can also be a lasting problem at home. Couples and children may all have different energy levels, but laziness can be spread if not dealt with immediately. 39._______ Be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal. Others in the home may eventually follow your example and perform their own task. It is difficult to practice laziness when you are surrounded by motivated people.

40._______ Enough exercise and a balanced diet can help you to develop a healthy lifestyle, thus enabling you to have more energy and help lift your spirits.

A. Knowing how to fight laziness is important.

 B. One way to fight laziness is to get enough sleep.

 C. To fight household laziness, lead by example.

 D. Complete a few tasks and reward yourself with what you enjoy, such as a good dinner or a film.

 E. Finally, taking exercise regularly can help you fight laziness.

 F. With strong determination, you will be able to achieve your goal.

 G. Laziness sets in when you no longer feel in charge of your own mind.
