I was small for my age. I was shy and sometimes it was hard for me to make friends with others. However, learning came fairly easy for me. I was the best in most of my classes, but PE class was my nightmare (噩梦) and made me feel that I was not as good as the others. Miss Forsythe was our PE teacher. She was young and energetic. Everyone liked her. She said that we all had to come to her classes. No one could hide from Miss Forsythe!
One day she told me that she wanted me to play a game with another girl in a PE show. I was rather worried that I wouldn’t do a good job as she explained her idea, but she was excited. With her encouragement, I had no choice but to agree.
It was a "boy meets girl" game. I played the boy and my classmate, Margaret Ann, played the girl. We were dressed in evening clothes and danced around the floor. According to Miss Forsythe, I had to pick up Margaret Ann when we finished the dance. Since I was not strong enough to pick the tallest girl up, it was she who picked me up. I suddenly felt ten feet tall! It was a huge success and everybody applauded (鼓掌) for our excellent performance. What a wonderful ending! Afterwards, I smiled confidently (自信地).Miss Forsythe’s understanding and willingness to create a place for me in her show (which certainly did not need me) gave me some much needed confidence. She was and always will be my favorite teacher.

Last week I visited my friend Pete in the new home where he lives with his wife and daughter. Pete used to spend his holidays travelling around the world.Nowadays he prefers to spend his holidays and weekends making his house look more beautiful. Like hundreds of thousands of other British people, he has discovered the joy of DIY (Do It Yourself), which means if there are any things that need fixing around the house, he will try to do the job himself.
As he showed me the new kitchen he put together by himself and the newly painted walls, I asked Pete where he got his inspiration (灵感) from. He told me that his favorite source of ideas was a DIY program on TV.
This got me thinking about the great popularity of DIY programs in the UK. Each major channel(频道) has at least one home or garden improving show and there’s even a satellite channel completely about the subject.
I guess it is not really surprising that DIY programs are so popular. Two common sayings in Britain- ‘an Englishman’s home is his castle’ and ‘there’s no place like home’-show how important our houses are to us. With the present economic downturn, many people can’t afford to buy a bigger house so they are looking at how they can make their house better without spending a lot of money. DIY is the perfect choice.
But be careful! I read a report that said over 230,000 people were injured while doing home improvements in the UK in just one year, including 41,000 who fell off ladders (梯子) and 5,800 who were seriously hurt by hammers(锤子). So I won’t be going down to the hardware store.
25. How did Pete spend his holiday in the past?
A. Visiting his friends
B. Travelling around the world
C. Diving
D. Making his house beautiful
26. Which might NOT be shown in a DIY program on TV?
A. Scuba diving
B. A garden improving feature (特别节目)
C. Home improvements
D. Fixing things in kitchens
27. Which is NOT the reason why DIY is popular among British people?
A. They enjoy DIY
B. They want to be on TV
C. They want to make their houses better themselves
D. They can improve their houses without spending much money
28. At the end of the article the writer wants us to remember _____.
A. not to go to the hardware store
B. to be careful not to get hurt while doing DIY
C. to keep watching DIY on TV while drinking a nice cup of tea
D. not to climb ladders or use hammers

Did you know that something as simple as the wallpaper on your computer can tell people a lot about you? According to researcher Donna Dawson, our computers say something about what we're like because they are part of our “personal space.”
A picture of a child or family on the screen often means the person cares deeply about their loved ones. A photo of the person surrounded by friends shows they value their popularity and probably work well with other people. On the other hand, pictures showing examples of past successes, like winning a prize may mean a person is only interested in themselves.
Pictures of nature and natural scenery tell people that you are driven to succeed and use the pictures to relax and remove the pressure (压力) in your life. Cityscapes, pictures of cities or towns, show that you enjoy travel and adventure. Most people with cityscapes as their wallpaper are optimistic (乐观的), happy people who feel even better thinking about the places they've visited or want to visit.
Pictures of animals show that you are optimistic and kind-hearted. You are often happy and you enjoy life and act young. Cartoons (漫画) or drawings show that you are a multitasker, someone who does many things at once. You have many responsibilities, but you deal with them well. That's one reason you like having something to smile about when you look at your computer wallpaper.
Then, what does plain blue wallpaper tell us about a person? According to Dawson, a person with plain blue wallpaper probably values their privacy and keeps work from becoming too personal.

Every country has its heroes. The heroes are the people the nation and especially the young people admire or think highly of. If you get a list of the heroes of a nation, it will tell you the potential (潜力) of that nation.
Today in America, if you ask the high school students to list their heroes, their choices would probably fall into three groups. The first group of heroes would be the rock stars — the people connected with rock music. There is no doubt that such people do have talent (才能) but one wonders if one should treat rock stars as a model. The rock stars too often are mixed (混合) with drugs and their personal life is not all that good. The rock stars are rich and wear the latest fashion styles. However, one should find more in a hero than such things as money and good clothes.
A second type of hero for the American youth is the sports star. Again you have a person who has a great ability in one area — sports. However, too often the personal life of the sports star is a bit of disorder. Too frequently, drugs and drinking are a part of life of the sports star.
A third type of hero is the TV or movie star. This person may have lots of acting talent and is quite handsome. However, the personal life of too many actors is quite sad and they should not be held up as a model of young people. Today, the rock star, the athlete and the actor all have become the models of the youth in America. Really, do you hear a young person say that his hero is a doctor, a teacher or a scientist? These people are not rich and do not wear fashionable clothes. However, they are talented people who work hard to make the world a better place for everyone.
What is really sad is that the young try to imitate their heroes. They like to wear the same clothes and follow their styles. If the heroes of today for the American young people are limited only to rock stars, athletes and actors, the future does not look too bright.

A. heroes of a nation will make the nation itself
B. if a nation has a lot of heroes, it will be strong
C. what the people admire will make the future of the nation
D. if you want to be a hero, you must admire the hero
33. From the passage, we know that the heroes the American youth admire are those ______.
A. who are perfect in all areas
B. who are talented in some area but lead an improper life
C. who are not bright but are good-looking
D. who are rich but are strict with themselves
34. What is the writer’s attitude towards American youth’s admiration?
A. He understands it
B. He is angry about it
C. He thinks badly of it
D. He is uninterested in it
35. What does the underlined word “imitate” mean in Chinese in the last paragraph?
A. 喜爱 B. 模仿 C. 崇拜 D. 迷恋
