The bed should be used as a place for sleep, but more and more people like to read an iPad a lot in bed before they go to sleep.

Charles Czeisler, a professor at Harvard Medical School, and his coworkers got a small group of people for an experiment. For five days in a row, these people read either a paper book or an iPad for four hours before sleep. Their sleep patterns were monitored all night. Before and after each trial period, they took hourly blood tests to paint a day-long picture of just how much melatonin(褪黑激素) was in their blood at any time.

When the people read the iPad as compared to the paper books, they felt less sleepy at night and less active the following morning. People also took longer to fall asleep on the iPad nights, and the blood tests showed that their melatonin secretion(分泌) was delayed by an hour and a half.

The researchers concluded that because of the rise of e-readers and the widespread use of e-things among children and teenagers, more research into the "long-term influence of these e-things on health and safety is urgently needed." Czeisler and coworkers went on, in the research paper, to point out that reading an iPad in bed may increase cancer risk.

However, software has been developed that can reduce some of the blue light from the screens of phones and computers, and there are also glasses that are made to reduce short wavelengths. While they seem like a logic solution for the nighttime tech users, it needs more research.

25. In Charles Czeisler's experiment, the group of people were asked to_______.

   A. sit in a row and receive the strict tests

   B. read a paper book and an iPad before sleep

   C. have their sleep patterns observed all night

D. have their blood tested per hour during the trial

26. The third paragraph tells us the iPad readers were likely to_______.

   A. feel less sleepy and tired in the day

   B. become less energetic the next morning

   C. fall asleep more easily after reading

   D. have a lot more melatonin secretion

27. The special software recently developed can _______.

   A. reduce the harm caused by doing nighttime e-reading

B. reduce the blue light from the screens completely

   C. help prevent eyes being harmed by short wavelengths

   D. be used in all the e-things widely and safely

A woman was walking her dog along a beach in New Zealand in late June when she saw something that looked like a white ball in the sand. It turned out to be a young Emperor penguin that was lost. At his age, he should have been close to the Antarctic, swimming for fish and playing on the ice floes(冰川) . But this penguin started swimming north and just kept going.

The penguin attracted a lot of attention in New Zealand. It has been 40 years since an Emperor penguin was last seen there. Researchers at the Department of Conservation were called in. They decided to watch the penguin closely, but not to disturb it in any way. Many New Zealanders came to Peka Beach to look at the elegant penguin. They were careful to keep their dogs away from it so it wouldn’t be frightened.

The public nicknamed the animal Happy Feet. Researchers started to notice that Happy Feet didn’t seem well. It turns out that he had been eating the sand from the beach, likely thinking it was snow.

The public raised more than 11,000 pounds for an operation to get the sand out of his stomach. The operation was a success, and Happy Feet was taken to a zoo in Wellington, NZ. A group of experts met to decide how to help Happy Feet return to the wild.

Last Sunday, they put him on a boat called the Tangaroa, in a specially built ice-filled box and took him out into the Southern Ocean, southeast of New Zealand. There, they released him into the ocean, which is his natural habitat. He took one last look at his human helpers and then dived into the ocean.

“Emperor penguins spend their first five years at sea,” said Peter Simpson of New Zealand’s Department of Conservation. “ What happens now is up to the penguin.”

Happy Feet was fitted with a satellite transmitter(发射机)so they can monitor his progress using the Internet. So far, the trackers shows that he swam northeast for a little while before getting his bearings and heading south.

28. Where is the young penguin supposed to appear?

AOn the sunny beach               B. Inside the hole in the ice.

CNear the Antarctic               DIn the epths of the ocean.

29. How was the penguin treated after he was found in New Zealand?

A. He was protected well and taken good care of .

B. He was sent to the local zoo and attracted much attention.

C. He was taken to the lab by researchers for study.

  D. He was disturbed by many curious New Zealanders.

30. The public collected some money to______.

Ado some research on the penguin          Bbuild a home for the penguin

Cget the sand out of the penguin’s belly     Dreturn the penguin to his habitat

31. What happened to the penguin in the end according to the passage?

AHe was put in a specially built ice-filled box on a boat .

BHe was bought to the Southern Ocean and released.

 CHe reached his home--The Antarctic.

DHe swam northeast from the the Southern Ocean. .

Many cities around the world today are heavily polluted. Careless methods of production and lack of consumer demand for environment friendly products have contributed to the pollution problem. One result is that millions of tons of glass, paper, plastic and metal container are produced, and these are difficult to get rid of.

However, today, more and more consumers are choosing “green” and demanding that the products they buy should be safe for the environment. Before they buy a product, they ask questions like these, “Will this shampoo damage the environment?” “Can this metal container be reused or can it only be used once?”

A recent study showed that two out of five adults now consider the environment safety of a product before they buy it. This means that companies must now change the way they make and sell their products to make sure that they are “green”, that is, friendly to the environment.

Only a few years ago, it was impossible to find green products in supermarkets, but now there are hundreds. Some supermarkets’ products carry labels to show that the product is green. Some companies have made producing of clean and safe products their main selling points and emphasize (强调) it in their advertising.

The concern for a safer and cleaner environment is making companies rethink how they do business. No longer will the public accept the old attitude of “Buy it, use it, throw it away, and forget it.” The public pressure is on, and gradually business is cleaning up its act.

32. It becomes clear from the passage that the driving force (动力) behind the green products is ______.

A. companies’ desire for bigger sales         B. public caring for the environment

C. new ways of doing business               D. rapid growth of supermarkets

33. Which of the statements is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. Only the productive methods are the cause of the heavy pollution.

B. Manufactures(制造商) made their products clean with cleaners.

C. Not all the consumers would like green products.

D. In fact, it is the public who made the companies produce green products.

34. The underlined word “it” in the fourth paragraph refers to ______.

A. a selling point                             B. the company name

C. the producing of green products          D. a great demand for health foods

35. What would be the best title for the text?

A. Business Goes Green                   B. Business and People                 C. Shopping Habits Are Changing                D. Supermarkets and Green Products
