Pulling heavy suitcases all day in the summer is hard work, especially when you’re a thin 14-year-old. That was me in 1940—the youngest and smallest baggage boy at New York City’s Pennsylvania Railway Station.
After just a few days on the job, I began noticing that the other fellows were overcharging passengers. I’d like to join them, thinking, “Everyone else is doing it.”
When I got home that night, I told my dad what I wanted to do. “You give an honest day’s work,” he said, looking at me straight in the eye. “They’re paying you. If they want to do that, you let them do that.”
I followed my dad's advice for the rest of that summer and have lived by his words ever since.
Of all the jobs I've had, it was my experience at Pennsylvania Railway Station that has stuck with me. Now I teach my players to have respect for other people and their possessions. Being a member of a team is a totally shared experience. If one person steals, it destroys trust and hurts everyone. I can put up with many things, but not with people who steal. If one of my players were caught stealing, he'd be gone.
Whether you’re on a sports team, in an office or a member of a family, if you can’t trust one another, there’s going to be trouble.

The crisis(危机) at Japan’s Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear(核) energy center caused by the terrible earthquake has raised questions about the future of the nuclear energy industry. Arjun Makhijani is president of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research in the United States. He says the disaster(灾难)in Japan is historic.
This week, the chairman of America’s nuclear agency said there is little chance that harmful radiation(辐射) from Japan could reach the United States. Gregory also said America has a strong program in place to deal with earthquake threats. No new nuclear power centers have been built in the United States since nineteen seventy-nine. That was when America’s worst nuclear accident happened at the Three Mile Island center in Pennsylvania. The accident began to turn public opinion against nuclear energy. At present, about twenty percent of electricity in the United States comes from nuclear energy.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Germany would close seven nuclear power centers while energy policy is reconsidered. The European Union is planning to test all centers in its twenty-seven member nations.
Developing nations are less willing to slow down the development of nuclear (nuclear expansion). China said it will continue with plans to build about twenty-five new nuclear reactors(反应堆). And India, under a cooperation agreement with the United States, plans to spend billions on new centers in the coming years.
Nuclear reactors supply fourteen percent of global electricity. Nuclear energy is a clean resource, producing no carbon gases. But radioactive waste is a serious problem to be solved (unresolved issue). So is the presence of nuclear power centers in earthquake areas like the one near Bushehr, Iran.

It is a fact that, in America most teenagers do not want to learn. But why? The truth of this is that most teenagers do not see the point in learning subjects in school, and that they do not see how it helps them in their lives. It's sad to see many teenagers choose to play in their Xbox rather than read a book.
Most teachers and parents try every trick in the book to get their teens to read or at the very least, get better grades than C's in their final grades. This is very important for them, because their work in school provides a path to their future.
However, few teenagers actually pay attention to this fact. For most teenagers, school is mandatory (强制的).They think history is pointless as it happened a long time ago. They don't realize that they can learn from the mistakes and experiences of earlier generations. They think geography is pointless because they'll never get to visit all these places anyway. They think math is a waste of time because they can add up using a calculator (计算器).English is also pointless. They care little for their ability to write correct grammar—after all, as long as they can text, it's fine! Science is a waste of time—they need to learn how to use drugs, not make them! And foreign languages! Well, doesn't everyone speak English these days? America is a big country? who needs to go abroad even if they could afford it?
So they do not see the point that sill these subjects really will enrich their lives and help them get on.They can not see what parents and teachers see in terms of(=on=about) importance in school and their education. They see it as a waste of time, or it being too hard because they have to get up early and do extra work to keep up.It is one main reason why teens do not want to learn in school, which is a major problem that every parent and every teacher has with their teenagers. It can take a long time and a lot of hard work to change this.
29.According to the author, why do most teenagers not want to learn?
A.Because they are busy with computer games.
B.Because all the subjects are too hard for them.
C.Because teachers and parents do not help them.
D.Because they can't see the meaning of learning.

The year is 2094. It has been announced that a comet (彗星) is heading towards the Earth . Most of it will miss our planet, but two pieces will probably hit the southern half of the Earth.
On 17 July , a piece four kilometers wide enters the Earth’s atmosphere (大气层) with a massive explosion . About half of the piece is destroyed, but the remaining part hits the South Atlantic at 200 times the speed of sound. The sea boils and a huge hole is made in the sea bed. Huge waves are created and spread outwards from the hole. The wall of water, a kilometer high, rushes towards southern Africa at 800 kilometers an hour . Cities on the African coast are totally destroyed and millions of people are drowned.
Before the waves reach South America, the second piece of the comet lands in Argentina. Earthquakes and volcanoes are set off in the Andes Mountains. The shock waves move north into California and all around the Pacific Ocean. The cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Tokyo are completely destroyed by earthquakes. Millions of people in the southern half of the earth are already dead, but the north won’t escape for long. Because of the explosions, the sun is hidden by clouds of dust , temperatures around the world fall to almost zero .Crops are ruined . The sun won’t be seen again for many years. Wars break out as countries fight for food. A year later, no more than 10 million people remain alive.
Could it really happen? In fact, it has already happened more than once in the history of the Earth . The dinosaurs were on the Earth for over 160 million years. Then 65 million years ago they suddenly disappeared. Many scientists believe that the Earth was hit by a piece of object in space. The dinosaurs couldn’t live through the cold climate that followed and they died out . Will we meet the same end?
33.What is mainly described in the passage ?
A.A historic discovery . B.An event of imagination
C.A research on space . D.A scientific adventure .
34.When the first piece hits the South Atlantic , it causes .
A.an earthquake B.damages to cities C.an Earth explosion D.huge waves
35.Why can’t the northern half of the earth escape for long ?
A.Because the land is covered with water
B.Because the light and heat from the sun can not reach the earth.
C.Because people there can not live at the temperature of zero.
D.Because wars break out among countries .
