My wife Julie and I were out on the road that runs around where we live, when we saw an old worn-out dog stumbling (蹒跚) painfully up the road. We stopped, bent down, talked gently to the dog and patted it. I checked and there was a collar with a phone number. I called but no one answered.

The dog was painfully thin. So Julie ran home to get some of our dog's food while I tried to encourage the dog. After Julie came back, we sat down on the sidewalk while our new friend made short work of the food. Eventually we got her home.

After trying for many times we got a response from the number. A lady came around with a bunch of flowers for us. She explained that Tara had been her father's dog. She was very old and got lost that morning. So, Tara was safely returned home.

Here is the truth of the story:

Actually Julie and I were out that morning because I was leaving. She was trying to persuade me to come back, but I wasn't hearing anything that made that sound likely.

I was about to turn and go when an old black dog walked between us and almost fell down. Suddenly we had something more important than our problem to worry about. There was a creature in need right before us and we had to work together to help it.

We did help it. And here I am writing the story in my own home, in my own family.

In the song "Love Is Not a Fight" Warren Barfield talks about marriage. At one point he sings, "And if we try to leave, may God send angels to guard the door." Sometimes angels come disguised (伪装) as dogs.
25.How was the dog when found?
A.Too weak to walk.              B.Thin and worn out.
C.Unable to eat food.              D.Homeless but gentle.
26.We can infer from Paragraph 2 that ________.
A.the writer had his own pet dog

B.the dog didn't go with the writer
C.the dog didn't eat any of the food

D.Julie bought some food for the dog
27.The underlined part "our problem" in the passage refers to the fact that ____.
A.an old black dog appeared in front of them
B.the writer didn't want to take Julie's advice
C.the couple had some trouble with their marriage
D.Julie disagreed with the writer's travel on business
28.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.A Helpful Couple                 B.A Famous Song
C.Saving the Dog                   D.An Angel Dog

Since the nineteen nineties, education has been required for all South Africans from age seven to fifteen. Last December, the government announced that seventy percent of students passed their final examination to finish high school. In 2008 the passage rate was about sixty-three percent. There have been increases each year since then.

Professor Shireen Motala at the University of Johannesburg says access to basic education is no longer the problem in South Africa. She says most children stay in school until they are about sixteen. The problem now, she says, is that large numbers of them leave without completing high school. Students take an examination known as the matric in grade twelve, their final or "matriculation" year. Professor Motala notes that less than half the children who started school in 2000 sat for the matric last year.

Educational researchers also point to another problem. They say South African schools do not produce enough students with the skills for higher education in math and science. Many schools are not well - equipped. They do not have libraries at school. Ninety - two percent of the schools do not have libraries.

Also, education specialists say in many cases, teachers and school principals do not have the skills or training to do their jobs. In other cases, they are simply not doing their duty to provide an education. Professor Motala says a number of teachers were poorly trained during the system of apartheid(种族隔离), or racial separation in South Africa. Apartheid ended in 1994.

Secondly, she says, teachers have been confused by the many educational reform efforts in the last fifteen years. And, finally, she thinks language differences in the classroom have not gotten as much attention as they should.

South Africa's minister of basic education promises a number of improvements.
29.How was thepassage rate in 2008?
A. uncertain          B. just so-so     C. high      D.low
30.What's the Motala's attitude towards the basic education for students in South Africa?
A.Confident.   B.Hopeless.    C.Negative.    D.Worried.
31.From the passage we know the matric is ________.
A.an examination difficult for students to pass
B.an examination for students in grade twelve
C.the number of students leaving school
D.the number of students taking exams
32.Students in South Africa find it hard to get improved in math and science because ________.
A.they drop out of school without finishing high school
B.teachers don't have the abilities to teach them
C.most schools can not provide enough equipment
D.there aren't such subjects in most schools

Did you know that sixty per cent of your body weight is water? However,

a loss of only two per cent of this water throughdehydration(脱水) during exercise can significantly affect your performance. The more you sweat, the more your exerciseperformance declines, unless you drink enough to replace your lossof fluids.

When you lose too much water, you can overheat quite easily, especially in a warm environment. But this is not the only problemyou may face. Dehydration leads to your heart pumping muchfaster, which means exercise becomes more difficult and requiresmore effort. Despite these problems, however, many of us simplydo not take enough fluids in when we head for the gym or set outon a run.

So why is this? How do we manage to lose so much waterwithout simply drinking more toreplace it? Well, itˈs easier thanyou think. When we are at rest, we quickly become aware that weare thirsty and will put that right by having a drink. When weexercise, on the other hand, our thirstmechanism(结构) does notwork as effectively, so we donˈt notice early enough that we areactually thirsty. In fact, we only start to feel thirsty when we havealready lost around two per cent of our body weight.

Another problem is that, the more dehydrated we becomeduring exercise, the more difficult it is to prevent furtherdehydration—because our stomachs become intolerant to fluidsand we do not absorb water properly, just when we need it most.

The key thing about fluids and exercise is to manage yourintakeproperly

—regular small amounts are preferable, and someshould be drunk before the period of exercise begins. You alsoneed to match your intake to the sort of exercise you are doing. For example, for one hour of exercise, such as taking part in a 10 km run, you need to drink about two extra litres of water. For longer periods of exercise, sports drinks are recommended.
33. We know from the text that during exercise, dehydration _____.
A. can be easily avoided

B. will lead to poor performance
C. can cause many health problems

D. will be controlled whenever we drink again
34.
Why do people suffer from dehydration easily during exercise?
A. Their thirst mechanism stops working.B. Their focus is on the exercise.
C. Their thirst response is slow.D. Their stomachs are full.

35.
When exercising, you are advised to _____.
A. have regular breaksB. drink water accordingly
C. drink sports water in advanceD. have at least two litres of water
