Something seemed different that day when I entered Donna’s fourth-grade classroom.
Each of the students was writing on a piece of paper, 41 things they couldn’t do.
The activity aroused (引起) my 42 , so I decided to check with Donna to see what was going on. As I 43 her, I noticed that she too was busy writing.
“I can’t get John’s mother to come for a teacher conference.”
“I can’t persuade Alan to use words 44 fists (拳头).”
I was at a total loss 45 students and teacher were focused on the negative rather than the more 46 “I can” statements.
Ten minutes later, students were asked to fold their papers in half and placed them into an empty 47 .
When all of the student papers were 48 , Donna added hers. She then put the box under her arm, 49 a shovel (铁铲) and headed out with all the students 50 her. They stopped at the farthest comer of the playground, where Donna began to 51 . The digging took over ten minutes because every student wanted a 52 . They were going to 53 their “I Can’ts”! When the hole was ready, they placed the box of “I Can’ts” at the 54 and covered it with dirt. After that, Donna announced:
“Boys and girls, please join hands and bow your heads.” So they did. Then Donna continued, “As we see, ‘I can’t’ is 55 today, but he is 56 by his brothers and sisters: ‘I Can’, ‘I will’ and ‘I’m Going to Right Away’. From today on, whenever you want to say ‘I can’t’, please think of today’s 57 . May everyone pick up their lives and move forward in the 58 of ‘I can’t’.”
I realized the students would never forget that day. The activity was 59 . It was an experience that would 60 in their mind forever.
