A moment’s drilling by the dentist may make us nervous and upset. Many of us cannot stand pain.To avoid the pain of a drilling that may last perhaps a minute or two,we demand the “needle” —— a shot of Novocain (一种麻醉药) —— that deadens the nerves around the tooth.
Now it’s true that the human body has developed its millions of nerves to be highly aware of what goes on both inside and outside of it.This helps us adjust to the world.Without our nerves——and our brain.Which is a bundle of nerves —— we wouldn’t know what’s happening. But we pay for our sensitivity. We can feel pain when the slightest thing is wrong with any part of our body. The history of torture(酷刑)is based on the human body being open to pain.
But there is a way to handle pain.Look at the Indian fakir(苦行僧)who sits on a bed of ails.Fakirs can put a needle right through an arm,and feel no pain. This ability that some humans have developed to handle pain should give us ideas about how the mind can deal with pain. The big thing in withstanding(经得起)pain is our attitude toward it.If the dentist says, “This will hurt a little,” it helps us to accept the pain.By staying relaxed, and by treating the pain as an interesting sensation, we can handle the pain without falling apart. After all, although pain is an unpleasant sensation, it is still a sensation, and sensations are the stuff of life.

A controversial new study has claimed that men really are more intelligent than women. The study concluded that men‘s IQs are almost four points higher than women’s.
British-born researcher John Philippe Rushton says the finding could explain why so few women make it to the top in the workplace.
He claims the “glass ceiling” phenomenon is probably due to inferior intelligence, rather than lack of opportunity.
The University of Western Ontario psychologist reached his conclusion after.Scrutinizing the results of university ability tests taken by 1 00,000 students aged 17 and 18 of both sexes.
A focus on the factors such as the ability to quickly grasp a complex concept, verbal reasoning skills and creativity――some of the key factors of intelligence――showed the male teenagers had IQs that were an average of 3.63 points higher. The average person has an IQ around 100.The findings, which held true for all classes and levels of education, overturn 100 year opinion that men and women average the same in general mental ability. They also conflict with evidence that girls do better in school exams than boys.
But Professor Rushton argues that the faster maturing of girl s leads to them outshining boy in the classroom.

I had been to several doctors as a child, but I have a special place in my heart for Dr.Vincent.He was a Pediatric Cardiologist at UCLA back in 1971 who saved my life.I was eight years old at the time with a severe heart problem and I needed heart surgery. My Morn did not have the money, and without the surgery there was a real good chance I would not live to be thirteen years old. After contacting several organizations Dr.Vincent was able to get financial help for me through United Way,a Crippled Children’s Organization.
Dr.Vincent was a handsome man;he was also very gentle and caring.I remember being in the hospital for an Angiogram test, and during the procedure I was crying hysterically,so the medical staff called in Dr.Vincent to calm me down, and he was able to comfort me when no one else could. Then the time came for me to have heart surgery;there was a fifty—percent chance that I would not make it through the surgery because it was experimental. At the time I was only the second or third person to have this procedure done, they reconstructed the main artery by using an artery from my leg.I was absolutely terrified, and again Dr.Vincent reassured me he would see to it that everything would be all right.I had a lot of confidence and trust in Dr.Vincent.He came to see me after the surgery, which was extremely painful but very successful, and brought me a stuffed animal.I was so surprised to get this gift from Dr.Vincent;I gave him a hug.I guess Dr.Vincent must have known I was feeling very lonely and scared. You see,I had no family or friends visit me while I was in the hospital except for my Mom,and I am not sure why.I do know one thing:I had a wonderful doctor who took the time to help a scared little girl who felt all alone.

During the 1 9th century, scientists thought that every part of the brain does a different job.But modern research has found this is not so,for it is not easy to say exactly what every part of the brain does.In the past fifty years there has been a great increase in the amount of research done on the brain.Scientists have discovered that the way the brain works is not as simple as people may think.Chemists tell us that 1 00,000 chemical changes take place in the brain e very second. Some recent research also suggests that we can remember everything that happens to us.We may not be able to think back on the things we've heard and seen, but it is all kept there in the storehouse of the human mind.
Earlier scientists thought that the power of one's brain got weaker and weaker as one grew older. But it is now thought that it is not true.As long as the brain is given plenty of exercise it keeps its power. It has been proved that an old person who has always been active in the mind has a quicker mind than a young person who has only done physical work without using much of his brain. It is now thought that the more work we give our brains, the more work they are able to do.
