Making the most of living abroad
Moving abroad can be a challenging experience. You enter a new culture where the customs and sometimes the language are different 36 It’s a time to discover new things, make new friends and begin a new adventure.
I now work as a language assistant in Lyon, France. To feel at home in France I involve myself in the culture as much as possible. 37 As you know, it isn't hard to find other English speakers and make friends with people that have the same or similar cultural customs to me. So what are the best ways to make yourself part of the new culture while living abroad?
Live with a native (本地的) speaker
38 Firstly, you have a friend! I've also had the chance to meet my house mate's
friends and communicate with them. Secondly, you can speak the local language every day. And thirdly, you have someone to tell you about the cultural customs and interesting places in the area.
Volunteer (做志愿者)
Volunteering is a great way to meet people of different ages in your local area.
39 This is a great experience and speaking with homeless people about their life stories is improving my French vocabulary and understanding.
Try the local food
The food in France is amazing and discovering new food is a fun experience. 40
My knowledge of the different bread and cheese types has grown greatly.
A. But this is challenging.
B. But it's also exciting.
C. There is no way living in that style.
D. I've tried food that I’ve never tried before
E. I find it easy to become part of a new culture.
F. There are many benefits to live with a native speaker.
G. I now volunteer with homeless people through my local church.
