Yesterday, our teacher asked us when a man could be referred to as an old man. David stood up and said people with wrinkles could be called old people. However, Mary didn't    __1__      for some people may gain wrinkles at an earlier age owing to their   __2__     life. The class was over and we still didn't reach any     __5__ so the teacher asked us to think about it after class.

The     __6__    has reminded me of the saying of J. Barrymore that a man isn't old as long as he is    __7__     something.

My grandma is such a woman who pursues her dream     __8__    when she's 70 now. She has    __9__    her dream of being a painter since she was a little child.    __10__ because her family was poor, she had to    __11__    her dream and stepped into the     __12__    to raise money so as to support her family. Though she has    __13__    abandoned her dream, she could hardly find any     __14__    to realize it because of the tough work.    __15__ chance came when she retired from her work. She began taking her painting lessons   __16__     she had allwhite hair and lots of wrinkles. At first, I was    __17__     her idea of attending school at so old an age, but after seeing her paint happily and enjoyably, I    __18__    feeling it a good choice. She seems    __19__     and looks fine.

So if we have our dreams and seek  them, we aren't old. It's when we don't know what we want and let    __20__     be the center point of our lives that we can finally be regarded as the old.

2.C 根据生活常识可知,艰苦工作易使人有皱纹,而且下文介绍奶奶的故事时,文中“she could hardly find any __14__ to realize it because of the tough work”“tough work”的提示。

5.A 根据空后的“so the teacher asked us to think about it after class”可推断出,我们对老师的提问未达成一致结论,故选A项。

7.B 根据下文的“My grandma is such a woman who pursues her dream __8__  when she's 70 now.”“So if we have our dreams and seek for them, we aren't old.”

11.C 根据下文的“stepped into the  __12__ to raise money so as to support her family”可推断,奶奶是将其梦想暂时搁置在一旁。

13.D 根据上文的“My grandma is such a woman who pursues her dream __8__ when she's 70 now.”

故选A项。

17.D 根据空后的“... but after seeing her paint happily and enjoyably, I __18__ feeling it a good choice”可知,起初反对奶奶的想法,故选D项。

19.A 根据上文的“seeing her paint happily and enjoyably”和空后的“looks fine”可知,此处指奶奶看上去很精神,由此判断选A项。

One day, when I was a freshman (一年级学生)in high school, I saw a kid named Kyle from my class walking home from school with all of his books. I thought to myself, “ 36   would anyone bring home all his books for the weekend? He must really be   37  .”

As I was walking, I saw several kids running toward him. They ran at him,   38   all his books out of his arms and he fell down in the dirt. His glasses went flying and   39   in the grass about ten feet away from him.

I ran over to him. As I handed him his glasses, he looked at me and said, “Hey, thanks!”

I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived. As it   40 , he lived near me. We talked all the way home. He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.

He had to prepare a speech on the graduation day, and I could see that he was  42   about his speech. So, I patted him on the back and said, “Hey, big guy, don’t worry. You'll be   43  !” He looked at me and smiled.

At graduation, he cleared his throat, and began. “Graduation is a time to  44   those who helped you make it through those   45   years. Your parents, your teachers…, but mostly your friends. I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best  46   you can give them. I am going to tell you a   47  .”

I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met. He had planned to   48   himself over the weekend and was carrying his stuff home. He looked at me and gave me a little smile. “Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable.”

Not until that moment did I realize that you should never underestimate(低估) the   49   of your actions. With one small gesture you can    50   a person’s life, for better or for worse.
